Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

  • Finally an Alien game which does the movies justice. A survival horror which focuses on stealth and exploration rather than combat. Wonderfully atmospheric, great graphics, reminiscent of the first Alien movie. Builds up the tension wonderfully slowly, with only vague, distant sounds of the Alien, which leaves you on tenterhooks the whole time, wondering when and how it will make an appearance. I think I was almost two hours in before even seeing the Alien in action.

If you're heavily into this genre of game as I am, and/or the Alien movies, then I cannot recommend this game highly enough.

  • It's a LotR inspired game. Enough said. Well, actually it's not. It's a great stand alone game in itself. An action RPG of the highest caliber. This ought to be in my number one spot. If the specs were not so high and I was able to play it smoothly on my subpar pc, and therefore able to complete it already, then it quite possibly would be.

  • Biggest surprise of the year was this fantastic little indie game, loosely based on the Siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, but focusing purely on the experience of the civilians not soldiers in combat. A survival, strategy game with aspects of micro management. Fantastic art style, realistic and moving back stories of the civilians. It's very bleak but a very rewarding game to complete. Well written and executed. Best indie game of the year.

  • Another survival horror on my list. One of the best of this type, action packed, jumpy, tense, gory scenes. Reminiscent of Resident Evil. Nothing truly original here to write home about but a thoroughly entertaining game, and a must for true horror fans.

  • Hilariously funny, funky graphics and of course, great music. I love the originality of this game. A fun adventure game, in an interesting world. Highly recommend this one for pure escapism. A mood lifter.

  • This game was way better than I expected it to be. I thought the novelty of it would get old rather quick and after the initial excitement at the tried and tested brand of South Park hilarity, it would fall a bit flat but it didn't. The gameplay is actually really, really good! Clearly not a game for those who are not fans of the show's type of humour though.

  • Another surprise on my list as I have not really played these type of collectible card games for the pc before, nor did I expect much from a free to play game but it's really quite addictive, and an ideal way to kill some time when you don't have long to play.

  • A very small, indie game with not a great deal to it but so addictive and memorable, so that's why it makes my list. It's such a pure and simple idea, with wonderful art style, gameplay and the most amazing music. I've had a lot of fun playing this multiplayer game this year. I must admit it is not as satisfying in single player mode but definitely worth picking up and adding to any collection.

  • Yes, yet another survival horror game. The market definitely seems saturated with them recently but this year has produced many decent ones. This is a 'found footage' style of game, focusing only on exploration and stealth, not on combat whatsoever. Extremely eerie. A very satisfying experience for any horror fan. Look out for the jump scares, of which there are many. This definitely got my adrenaline pumping.

  • Fantastic retro style game. Everything about this game is perfect. It achieves everything it sets out to do. A homage to classic Nintendo side scrolling platform games. This is just a joy to play and evokes fond childhood game playing memories. Addictive, fun, no brainer, really great soundtrack.
