Ok this is probably going to be a tough one because I only remember vague bits of this game. Hell I'm not even sure if it was on the Commodore 64 or an Amiga computer :D

All I remember is that you played as a dude with a gun where you could run left and right and you had to shoot enemies you came across. I think you could also pick up weapons that enemies dropped. You were able to jump and duck and you had to use elevators to go up and down.

On that note, elevators didn't always go down and up. Some only went up or down and you'd have to run to another elevator to get to where you wanted to go. At least I think that's what it was like :D

I remember loving and hating that game at the same time. But now I can't remember it for the life of me :(

If anyone can remember the name of this game I'll be forever grateful!

Edit: I also played Another World and Lemmings on that computer lol.

Could be Flashback.

White Fang and The Call of the Wild by Jack London are great books which seem to fit what you're looking for.

I came in here to suggest The Call of the Wild. It will hopefully be exactly what you want. If you don't know much about it, it's from the perspective of a dog, and it's so fresh and ahead of its time (ya know, for a classic). It was recommended to me once upon a time by a very smart man, and I almost always suggest it to people who ask for old book suggestions. Do yourself a favor and read it.

I miss Patrick and think the site is worse without him. He brought a little more needed diversity of thought, and he provided a LOT of good content, especially video/audio. I guess we can always keep tuned into his Youtube channel, but I don't care for Kotaku enough to visit it regularly.

Thank you, @patrickklepek. You made many people people who disagree with you at least think about things in a different way--even if you didn't completely change their minds. Keep working on improving yourself and others. I don't know if you adhere to the adage that great power leads to great responsibility, but you seem to understand that you have a voice that potentially matters to a lot of readers. I hope you continue to use it in the right ways. You HAVE made a difference. Good luck in the future.

In its time, FF7 was full-stop unprecedented. There was NOTHING like it. It blew all previous JRPGs out of the water. That includes the previous Final Fantasy games and Chrono Trigger, which is an excellent JRPG for a 1995 NA release.

FF7 was nearly universally praised as one of the greatest RPGs made. Some top magazines even proclaimed...or at least suggested the possibility of...it was the greatest game ever made, but not everyone liked it. Jeff has said he was not a fan, and I had a close friend who didn't care too much for it.

OK, having said that, going back to FF7 now will not have the same impact it had at that time. Part of the reason the game is loved by many is that those who played it didn't play it in a vacuum. They played it with their video game backgrounds and expectations shaping the experience...in 1997. Context makes all the difference.

To someone who wasn't there playing at the time of FF7's release but plays it for the first time now, it might seem mediocre in many ways. Even people who play it now and like it, will not get what it meant to mature enough video game fans at the time. All I can say is try it, but don't necessarily expect to get the praise that so many lavish on it. It's one of those "you had to be there" moments. And you did MAYBE HAVE had to be there to love it like so many others do.

It will always be one of my favorite games.

Well, I'm going to the show, so I guess I can mark off seeing Metallica live from the list (that doesn't exist) too.
