If I could only have 5 PC games until the end of time.

These are the PC games that, if I were force to limit my total game count, I would say are the ultimate, must-haves.

Each of these games scratches an itch that no console could replicate. No matter how long I'm going to sit down, I could find something awesome to do if I had these 5 games. See comments for each for a quick summary of why I love it. Know that none of these would work on a console quite the same way as they work on PC (save maybe Audiosurf, as I play that with a X360 controller, but my whole music library is on my PC, not my Xbox).

List items

  • The beta has already made me think about strategies non-stop for Starcraft 2. If I want something crazy and exciting to play for 20-30 minutes, this is it. 1v1 with a friend has never been so fun.

  • Turn based RTS was a weird concept before I played Civ 4. I could easily play this game with a friend for 6 or so hours, just enough time to take over the world. I love the depth of Civilization, and I specifically didn't put Civ 5 because I don't know if Leonard Nimoy is going to narrate it.

  • I love the strategic pacing of Sins. I hope to someday sit down with a friend and play a 2v2v2v2 game in a 4 to 5-star system game sometime this summer. I would not at all feel bad if that game ran up to 13 hours long. Sounds like a good time to me.

  • I would put Diablo 3 here, but out of principle, I haven't played that yet. I haven't actually played SC2 either, but I know what to expect there. If Diablo 3 does what D2 LoD did, I will love it. I put the expansion pack specifically here because a few of the upgrades were significant enough that I cannot play the game without the expansion anymore. If this is what we can expect from Blizzard expansions in the future, I am totally excited.

  • Dude, Audiosurf. I can easily play this game for hours, starting a CD and playing through that whole artist's discography. The integration with leaderboards is pretty neat, but I simply love the fact that I can use any song I want. Or even any "song" I had. This is certainly my oddball on this list, but what if I want to play for only 3 minutes? Done.
