Hypocrisy, thy name is Giant Bomb

I love Giant Bomb. I've followed the current crew since that other website was called videogames.com. Since the full site launched in July of 2008, GB has provided awesome commentary on video games and other crazy stuff the gang is in to. From Endurance Runs, to Quick Looks, to the Bombcast, to freaking Mailbags; any time a new video is posted here, I have to stop what I'm doing and watch the whole thing. It's been really cool watching this little site grow into one of the most influential gaming sites on the internet.

That being said, I worry for the future.

The GB crew several times has harped on companies who overcharge for DLC and content that should be on the disc. Yet, at the same time, they are going to start charging people a monthly fee for a t-shirt and the ability to access the new and improved mobile website. If that's not hypocritical, I don't know what is. I can download movies and trailers by using a Firefox plugin. I can get HD videos from Gametrailers for free. No advertisements? Once again, there's Ad Block plus. Everything they're offering I can already receive, and for the amazing price of free. What exactly am I paying for here?

How is this any different from publishers charging for game modes that are already on the disc? For GB to get on their soapbox to decry the money-grabbing methods of game companies and come right back and do the exact same thing is off-putting and disgusting.

And what about for the people like me who paid for the iPhone App? Are they just going to stop supporting the paid membership  when it's not profitable anymore?

I don't get it. It seemed like the Whiskey Media group knew what it was doing. Sadly, I was wrong.

@pbhawks45: They are.  That's how internet makes money.  Donations, subscription fee, and ads.  If they did what you wanted then they would be poor and not able to do they're jobs!  Your just acting like a baby since they will have HD.  Don't pay for it then and just use the site like you've been doing.

@MiniPato: It's not available yet.  When it comes out in September (I think that's what Snide said), it'll let users watch 720p footage and have no ads across all Whiskey sites and each site will have their own special subscriber-only features, but no site is TAKING AWAY features.

It's pretty fucking arrogant to suggest that you are entitled to free content. You aren't entitled to shit, buddy-boy, and the fine folks at whiskey can charge for whatever they want. If the bill is too tall then feel free to shop elsewhere.

It's not really hypocritical in relation to overpriced DLC until you know what it's going to cost. I have been here since the site launched as well and one thing I have noticed is they are pretty fucking receptive and generally awesome guys working here. They aren't going to screw you over, and if you have a problem they will listen to your concerns. Considering they haven't even announced a price plan yet I think it's a little early to be getting all indignant about having to pay for stuff. Please remember all the shit that already exists will remain free.

Running a website ain't cheap and these guys have families to support. It's a business and it always has been and that means they have to make money somehow. To suggest that they should only work for free is just fucking naive - and no, not hypocritical of whatever Horse Armour Microsoft is currently pumping out. You don't have to buy anything, so stop complaining.

I think the OP's logic is entirely flawed. He has no legitimate reason to complain about features which are OPTIONAL and not necessary. They're a bonus, for paying for premium service.

There's just so much wrong that I can't even begin listing them.

Yes they are suckering people out of money to support their lavish lifestyles of caviar and foot massages and not to support the site. They can't make money on their own and they did come up with a  better business plan and that plan is the subscription service that you are bitching about.

I don't mind the ads that they have so I can live with em. As for HD videos, I  go to GB for their funny quicklooks, bombcasts, office videos, and endurance runs. I go to Gametrailers for HD videogame trailers. So I'm not gonna subscribe.

That's an illegal amount of money.

Awww. Does McDonalds take money from hard-working people like yourself when a customer orders a burger? What a shitty business plan eh? They should just hand it out.

GB (and Whiskey Media) are offering a service that people can pay for. It's optional. Or they can completely bombard the site with ads. The site has always been free to use, and they're still adding new features, completely free. They can't make money 'on their own'. Grow up and be realistic.

And for the record, the currently announced features aren't everything that will be offered in the final package. Pricing hasn't been announced yet either. It's way too early to be moaning.

Wasn't the app $2?

Also, it seems like little to none of the people here have mentioned that those are JUST the 3 features that everyone has been asking for and have been announced. Dave said there would be much more, and I have no reason to think that he is lying about that. Honestly, pbhawks45, if you can't handle an excellent site charging a nominal subscription fee for a few greatly improved features while leaving absolutely everything the same for those who don't want to pay, then you should just get out seeing as how you can't handle the concepts of business or economics.

Also, the mobile versions of the site are going to be usable by non-subscribers; it's not an app, just a redesigned site. They're just using money from those who can handle the concept of subscription to fund it.

How is it spoiled when there are thousands of other profitable websites that are free? Look at digg.com. They've got ads that aren't intrusive, and its one of the biggest websites in the world. How is this acting spoiled when free websites are the NORM, not the exception?

So this thread is really just you bitching about the lack of support for the iPhone app? That app which cost you $1. One fucking dollar? How much support do you really believe that entitles you to?

To be honest I think you can't win this argument, not after your original post. I understand what you mean, but again - until a price plan has been announced there really is no cause to get all worked up about it. I have faith that the members of Whiskey are not going to fuck us over. If they offer a $10 monthly subscription it will be because they believe they have something worth $10 a month. Whether you then decide to pay it is completely up to you.

@SethPhotopoulos: You underestimate the popularity of this site. 1.5 million people globally visit this site on a monthly basis. Over 100 THOUSAND people subscribe to the podcast. It's the 2,510th most popular website in the US. More people go to Giant Bomb than Change.org, Barack Obama's official website.

@pbhawks45: Yes, and those 100 THOUSAND people don't pay a dime to listen to the podcast. The podcast has no ads, so that doesn't generate revenue.  I'm also willing to bet that a good chunk of those 3.3 million people run an adblocker so the few ads that GB runs don't make as much revenue for them as they should.

@Fish_Face_McGee: I think that's something they should do on the Bombcast. I wouldn't mind having an ad at the beginning of the Bombcast. It's not intrusive at all. Look at TWiT. He takes natural breaks to advertises, it takes 45 seconds, and the products he advertises are all good products. I have no problem with ads.

They aren't begging, they are offering a few small perks if you want to pay a little bit of money.  If you've been here since the start, you'll know that people have been asking how they make money and when ads are discussed, the general consensus is that most people don't mind ads but there is a select group (myself included) who would pay to remove them or even pay solely to support a website they like and have been asking for subscriptions since day one.  Now I don't know about you, but I prefer to spend my money on things I like over those I do not and Giant Bomb falls into the "like" category so I do not have an issue spending my money I worked hard to earn to support a company who has provided me with hundreds of hours of entertainment.

Look at it this way, you go to a movie, spend ten dollars to get in (plus an additional ten on snacks), and maybe get entertained for a couple hours, depending on the movie, then leave.  On the other hand, you go to Giant Bomb, enjoy hundreds of hours of content for free, think "Yeah, this is pretty good", decide to subscribe to support the company, get many hours of content each month, a t-shirt (I hope), and the fuzzy feeling knowing that you are supporting one of the best videogame websites/internet media companies on the web.  And even if you don't want to/can't pay for the subscription, you still get the same huge amount of high quality content, but with a few ads to pay for you instead of a subscription.

As a daily user of Giant Bomb, Tested, and Screened, I will be getting the subscription because I've been entertained/informed by these websites enough that I feel I owe them something.  Hell, Tested saved me $99.99 by showing me that I was wrapping the cord for my MacBook Pro incorrectly and it has saved me the cost of getting the hard drive on said MacBook replaced professionally (I will be doing it myself.  I'm getting a 750GB drive).  I imagine through Quick Looks, I've saved a few bucks on games I've been planning to get but discovered that they probably wouldn't be my thing.

Well I do. GB already stated they don't want to be that site. It's better to better to be supported by people who want to donate and support GB than to have 30 second "Power to the Player!" douchebag gamestop voice in the beginning of every video. It's been stated many times that optional features are being added and that nothing would be taken away from free users. What say you to this? You have been dodging that point the whole time. PS: Buying GB app =/= subscribing to GB.

@MiniPato: It's more of a fear of the unknown. How long until a quicklook is only available to subscribers? I know they say they won't do it, but what if business dictates them to hide a new feature behind this subscription? That's the worry from me. Businesses say way what the customer wants to hear, but when it gets down to business, they'll often flip-flop on their positions. I'm not saying GB will do that, though. Subscriptions worry me. It can be a slippery slope.

Didn't they claim that most of the current features will remain free? The subscription option is, in my eyes, just for users who feel the need to support a website that they enjoy. I think it's fair that that group of supporters is given a few extra features in exchange for their financial support.

They claimed that the iPhone App is still going to be supported, too.

I think you're a little bit off on what they are actually trying to do here. I don't want to rehash what others have said better than I, but, people have wanted to support this site for a LONG time in some way. They haven't ever taken donations, and only offered a minimal amount of tees for a year. Why would you want to support this site? Because they have done a fabulous job.

So by introducing a payment option that includes that t-shirt, along with HD videos on the mobile with no ads, its a way to offer those who want to pay a little extra without *NOT* giving something to those who don't wish to pay for it. Its a win win in my book, as its not the usual pay system that is like "oh here's a free version, but it blows so you really have to upgrade." I think GB and Whiskey have done it right in this case.

Oh come on. The iPhone app was what, 2 bucks? Get over it. They made it back when the site didnt work in Safari, but now it does. And it still will, whether you buy the subscription or not.

Your comparison to DLC is BS, as Jimbo pointed out earlier. You pay 60 bucks for the game before you get any DLC. You havent paid a dime for anything on Giant Bomb except the iPhone app. The subscription wont take away features that you have now, but will add new perks for the subscribers, who want to help out this site.

Quit your whining.
