@alistercat: Past which bell? Are you talking about all the fire past the second? If so you can ignore that for now. You've got the right idea, head to the fortress. You should probably drop the drake sword, it starts strong but caps early, just experiment with the weapons you have, find something with a move set you like and upgrade from there. Choose strength or dex according to the weapon, don't dump points into both once you meet the requirements. Resources (for the most part) are infinite so don't worry about what to spend on them on.
I think upgrading shields improves stability which means you lose less stamina per block, I'd focus on your weapon first.
Boss souls let you craft unique weapons, they can be cool but they're not a big deal. Alternatively you can crack them like you do with all the other souls you pick up. I didn't touch them my first play through and I wasn't short of good weapons or souls. You can't go wrong really, just check the unique weapons out on the wiki before you crack them because once you do that weapons gone.
Kind of topic, but I feel dumb making a whole new thread for this question, I kind of want to play a Pokemon game but have no idea where to start. Is X or Y a good "first pokemon" game? Worth getting a 3DS for? Can anyone recommend a good Pokemon game for a first timer on GBA or DS?
X and Y is probably the best pokemon ever, but if you don't own a 3DS I'd say go with HeartGold/Soul Silver (DS) or FireRed/LeafGreen (GBA) first. They're both really good as well, and you'll appreciate X/Y more if you visit some of the older ones beforehand.
Logically I guess Vita is the better option, that opens up a whole new platform of games and you can still play Pokemans on your regular 3DS. There's probably plenty of stuff worth playing on Vita too considering you don't own a PS3. I only own an XL and it's pretty dope, if you're dissatisfied with the original and would be playing more 3DS than vita anyway these next few months I don't think it would be silly to get a XL.
