"This game looks like ass anyway, especially with the latest news about the fatigue system. That feature is going to make this game tank. Play for 4 hours, and not get any experience for the next 48 hours? Bullshit. "

The fatigue system doesn't limit play to such an extreme - such stories have spiralled out of control due to doomsaying and a very liberal interpretation of a Square Enix interview posted by Famitsu, nothing more. The system has been in place since early in the currently ending closed beta, and has changed through this, and will change again due to user feedback before launch, possibly before open beta next month.

@REDRUN: As I posted earlier, a full translation of the original interview can be found here, with no mention of any 'hour a day' limit. I've played in the beta for longer than an hour a day, and I haven't had my XP reduced as a result of this system yet.

The game is still in closed beta, which ends today, and they already plan to change the system that is currently in place due to player feedback during the different beta phases.

So, everyone is blowing this completely out of proportion and this thread shouldn't exist because it's only causing people to whine about something that will help your character reguardless? Gotcha. "

What if a player doesn't want to play any other class but the one they're on? They're sorta screwed. "

You'd face a disadvantage sticking to a single class whether there was a fatigue system in place or not - levelling more than one class will give you more points to raise your stats, along with different abilities from another class. You'd be more beneficial to a party too if you had the option of switching classes depending on the situation.

@Cornman89: yeah, the game has classes, and you are right in how the game determines which one you level. What you equip determines what class you are, and you'll then gain skill points towards that class. You can simply carry several different weapons or tools and swap classes as you see fit.

The stories go off two simple quotes from a Famitsu interview, and then start making too many assumptions it seems. A full translation of the interview in it's original form can be found here, without the doomsaying.

The current beta has had a system in place for a while now referred to as 'surplus', where extended XP gains will start to be penalised at varying levels, thus encouraging you to level up in other ways. At launch you'll be able to choose from 18 different classes across the various disciplines the game has to offer, so it's not as if you'll run out of things to do. Each class has it's own surplus rank, as does a players physical level, and gathering is measured differently too. The game lets a player know when this kicks in with a visual message and by colour coding it's text.

As to how long this takes to kick in? Hard to tell, and it's still early days with the closed beta coming to a close, but the general consensus seems to be that players can typically take a class from level 1 to 14 before surplus kicks in. In my time playing the beta, I've never experienced it. Hardly only letting us play for an hour a day.

Other MMOs have systems in place to help the more casual player too - consider WoW, where players gain a 100% rest XP bonus if they've left themselves in a city or inn when they log out. On return, they're earning double the XP for kills that an unrested player of the same level will earn.

Hi There...

Now that I don't have to wait for my edits to be authorised on the site, I've tried different methods to get the + sign to show up when I edit wiki pages, but to no avail. i can get them to show up in the editor just fine, and I've even used the + code for them too, and when I add formatting to such lines then the editor changes them to a +, but when it comes down to viewing the page after the edit? They're just not there.

Is there any workaround possible for this, or is a fix in the works? Or should I be PMing someone specific in order to get a fix?

"XIV isn't fun. I really enjoyed it when I first started the beta, but yeah, I don't know what they were thinking when they designed the vast percentage of the game's content. The controls are horrid, you're limited to 8 quests every two real-life days, and despite the apparent focus on grouping no one actually participates in anything that involves socializing. I blame the WoW generation of MMOs for promoting self-gratification and anti-social behavior in games like these."

I've found things the exact opposite actually - when I first tried the beta, I had some serious worries for the game considering it's planned release date, but as we've progressed through the different testing phases I think we've seen improvements across various aspects of the beta. Controls have been updated in phase three, and more updates for this are on the way.

The quest limitations you mention are just those from the guildleve system, and look unlikely to change - doesn't stop you from joining up with others with active levequests and gaining rewards from them. The game differentiates between quests, regional levequests and local levequests, so it's not like you'll be left with nothing to do.

"SE have basically fixed everything that people didn't like about FFXI, but then went ahead and bulldozed through the things that were good about their previous online multiplayer venture. It's being rushed entirely unfinished to its September 30 release date to beat Cataclysm out the door. It may get some strong sales numbers with some thanks to this but it's not going to keep many subscribers. "

I'd be surprised if the version that we're currently testing is the bleeding edge version that the developers are knocking out. I'd expect us to have a custom build with them drip feeding us features that they want testing, as they seem to know what features are already set up for future beta phases. I'd be surprised if the game sticks with it's planned release date judging on what I've seen, but I know there's more to come, so my fingers are crossed. For now...

Both!

Civ IV should be a steal now, can't remember how much it is on Steam. Failing that, check out some online retailers to check pricing of the boxed version.

This way, a few healthy sessions of IV will get you in the mood for V when it comes out later next month.

I'm in the mood to play some IV now. Shame it's 1:15AM...
