Ravenhoe

Finished Shadow of Mordor. What a stupid ending and final boss fight. But otherwise great game. Now to tackle Dragon Age I & II, c...

A chess game with a twist (ouch) 0

A chess game at its core, this game is the perfect example on how aesthetic production values such as the anmations in this case make or break the game. In this case, they absolutely MAKE the game. Every time one of your tiny chess figures throws one of the opposing team's from the board a neat little animation depicts the fight. the animation is very slick, considered this game saw its birth in the C64 era and had been a gfx favourite for many people. I spent hours and hours to see every possi...

The caped Crusader, back in the days 0

Nowadays, with the caped crusader being back en vogue again, thanks to Christopher Nolan and his masterful resurrection of the franchise, some people forget that Batman had already a small era of "prime" back in the 90ies. Tim Burton's depiction of the superhero in Batman Returns did well with the fans, for the first time acknowledging Batman's broody and gloomy nature as part of the whole concept. The SNES game Batman returns, based on the film, is a brilliant Beat 'Em up and maybe on of the ...

Solid Cooperative Action 1

I have played through this game a few times with my brother. While it is a solid single-player experience on its own i truly shines as a two player cooperative game. Featuring the usual array of heroes you roam the lands in search of damsels in distress and dragons to be slayed. Well, almost. The game is unfortunately very linear and plays more like an isometric action game han an RPG. The choice of weapons and number of monsters is very limited and supports that notion. Still, the game mechanic...

Get those eight-legged bastards ! 0

To this day, I must admit I have never seen the movie the game is based on. I somehow missed it when I was a kind and it seems to be quite the obscure title to purchase by today. The game itself is equally unknown and puts you in the role of a critterhunting fat man who stomps and sprays his way to a little village. I have never been able to complete the game but it is still lots of fun. You start out driving around the neighbourhood until some hosue starts flashing in agony due to some spidars...

Haunting to the last 0

How many hours and sleepless nights has this game stolen from my life. I remember me and by best school chum sitting in my darkened room, biting our finger nails and being scared to bits while sneaking through the Lovecraftiion mansion. The game is a nice mix of action / platformer style sequences where you have to fight of various monsters either punching or shooting them to bits (or do other things) and figuring out some very basic puzzles which are no comparision to "pure" adventure games, b...

Alien Incident 0

Alien Incident is an "old-school" adventure game (think Lucas and Sierra) with a quirky setting and funny storyline. Like in many other adventure games, the protagonist of the game is a somewhat "simple" young man who unwillingly launches into an adventure, a victim of circumstance. This time, you have to discover what is going on around your little village regarding the recent arrival of some (another adventure favourite) aliens ! Somehow, your lunatic uncle of a professor (...) has his gloved ...

Air Traffic Chaos 0

A cute little game that is perfect for the Nintendo DS and it's touchscreen. In the role of a stressed-out tower coordinatior (Air traffic controller) it is your job to ensure the flawless procedures to go on at the airport which consists basically of two things, assigning gates to landing airplanes as well as assigning starting lanes to, well, starting air planes and that is about it. Of course, given the fact that there only three looped "streets" in the sky, you have to think ahead to avoid c...

Age of Wonders Review 0

I have played the other titles in the series as well. And while the game mechanics and the atmosphere always appealed to me, I deeply missed the opportunity to let the world be randomized. This stand-alone expasion to AOW2 features just that which makes it, IMHO, the best game of the series and the only one which will bring you back, if any. When it comes to exploring a fantasy world with its caves (actually a huge underground tunnel system), the outer worlds (a kind of paralell dimension), it ...

Age of Conan 0

What can I say, who will ever dethrone World of Warcraft ? I suppose it will be Blizzards upcoming MMO itself, the king is dead, long live the king. Age of Conan was an ambitious attempts, focussing on lore, theme and atmosphere instead of casual playability (such as WOW and all the "free" online MMOs such as Dofus, Rappelz etc.) The lore was very well implemented, yet one must wonder who knows Robert E.Howard's fictional canon anyway ? Compared to the LOTR, Star Trek Online (tba), Star Wars Gal...

Abuse Review 0

The Personal computer has never been the Mecca for Jump N Run gamers. The Amiga did it before him with plenty of good and great jump n runs to choose from (Magic Pockets, Switchblade, Wolfchild, Assassin, the list goes on) and SNES stealing the show when it came to platformers. The rest is history. Back in the day, the PC was the system of the nerd (which was a rare breed back then, before the epidemic spread), the mouse being the perfect tool for strategist and simulation gamers, not to mention...

Abomination Review 0

In the wake of X-Com, Abomination was another squad based game pitting a bunch of good guys against demented mutants (not aliens). The game lacks X-Com's oozing atmosphere and theme though, but is fun to play nonetheless. The game features a weird system of being half turn based and half real time, which cannot be explained and I have played the game and still do not really know what is going on sometimes. Nevertheless, the game features a non-linear, random campaign mode which X-Com didn't (at ...

7 Days a skeptic 0

Like his other adventure games (5 Days a stranger, 6 days a sacrifice) Ben "Yahtzee" Crosshaw turns a weakness into a virtue by basing the game in a very claustrophbic setting. Even more than in the game from the series, the goal of "escaping" both the situation as well as literally escaping from the spaceship make this game hauntingly intense and scary. The story, again, slowly unfolds and unravels horrible ongoings on the spaceship which are all more or less connected to a rather lethal ancien...

Anno 1602 review 0

I still think Anno 1602 is by far the best in the Anno series. The other games may have been more fleshed out but did not feel unique anymore with games such as Zeus, Caesar III and Immortal Cities around.

In Anno, you take care over a small island (within an array of islands) building housing and workplaces for your citizens. It is a classic strategy game. The placement of your buildings is important, so is the balance between selling and buying. The problems you are fac...

5 Days a stranger review 0

5 Days a stranger is as old school as it gets. A likeable hero of questionable reputation gets sucked in head first into a bizarre situation involving and old mansion and some giant knife wielding lunatic. The setting for the game follows the classic formula of a creepy mansion, complete with secret rooms, locked rooms and loads of items to be found and used with each other. They puzzles are equally challenging and satisfying and you won't find any obscure and bizarre puzzles to be solved (put t...
