How to make a Let's Play : Part 1 how to overcome Stage fright

As of now I have made 15 episodes of my let's play and I have found it very helpful in helping me finish games. But as I have been ask by a few people how do you talk and not be self-conscious. Now for me that is easy I no self control and I don't care what people think about me. But I must admit that not all people are like me so here are 3 steps to try to help you over come your Stage fright.

Step 1: Just get your self talking
Now for some this might be the hardest step just start by saying what ever comes in to your mind. Like I think this dude is going to try to kill me to this car is really handles poorly. Literary I mean anything a song a bad joke it dose not mater as long as you are talking

Step 2: Just be your self
One of the worst things you could do is try to adopat a persona that is not you or very unconvincing. Don't worry about what people will think just be you self and most importantly, have fun.

Step 3: Take it slow
Start of small with some thing simple and show it to people that will give you good helpful advice. Don't jump in head first you might just smash you head open.

Step 4: Don't let you psych your self out
Remember that video games are supposed to be fun you can record any thing if you are always worrying about weather people will like it. Remember it is the internet no mater what you will always fined some one who thinks you are the best thing since sliced bread.

Step 5: Have fun
Now this might sound like the easiest step but it is harder than you think. You have to try to have fun even when you have died for the 15th time. Remember that if you are not having fun nether will the people watching it.

Hopefully this will help some one overcome there Stage fright. This bears repeating HAVE FUN!

Alright, sure. It's fairly obvious that if one wants to do a let's play, one has to not be totally self conscious. Nonetheless, I have an idea for your next installment of these: How do I make my Let's Play not totally boring? It's easy to give aimless commentary or be a self-indulgent prick. It's much harder to make the act of watching a game interesting or informative. There are lots of bad LPs out there, and while I haven't watched yours, I suggest you ask yourself "Is mine boring?"

I'd recommend doing a game you know a lot about, since that means you'll have a lot to talk about. Also, I'd say that some of this is easier said than done, since it's easy to psych the shit out of yourself, blanking your mind of everything you wanted to say. Besides, even if you say everything you want to say, there's a good chance that you won't fill ten minutes with "this is like that one episode of Adventure Time, only with more anime characters" or "these people are leaping twenty feet in the air."

You make a lot of valid points, man. The first thing I learned about making LPs is that there will be people on the internet who think anything is funny. I considered myself to be absolutely awful at Let's Plays and made super lame jokes consistently but still ended up with ~150 subscribers just for doing one series on The Path.

I'd say that part of it has to do with the source material. After all, who the shit wants to see a Let's Play of Super Mario Bros 3 or Dragon Warrior? I'm not insulting the quality of those games; I'm just saying that they don't have a lot of interesting material for a Let's Play. Instead, try something a lot of people haven't played, or something that's just consistently insane. That's why I want to see a Let's Play of Cho Aniki :P.

@Video_Game_King: Well, yeah. I sure as hell don't care about someone playing through a game that everyone and their mom has played at some point in their lives. But the games that truly benefit from LPs are RPGs and Strategy Games, which are also the ones that are more likely to not have something interesting happening every 5 seconds (or really, every 5 minutes). Thus, it takes good commentary to compensate for the games' lack of visceral appeal. Like what this guy that I subscribe to does, although it might just be the accent.

Oddly enough, I, too, am subscribed to him. However, I'd say that it's just a matter of finding the most interesting games out there. For example:

Personally I think it's silly to make these things, doubly so if you talk over them since then people can't just use it as a means to watch a game they wanted to play but for whatever reason never will, but I understand the appeal in doing them as a hobby.

The way I would get over the afraid of talking bit is to imagine you are talking to someone sitting in front of you. Try to think about the kind of things someone might ask you and talk about that as things happen. Or find a partner to play off of when possible.

You actually record Let's Plays? I just fantasize about it while saying random shit while I play a game. I can't help it; I know that nobody's listening, but I still say random shit.

Yeah, I pretty much just do this. I feel like I would run out of things to say in a Let's Play, or I'd just procrastinate recording them so much that I'd never end up beating the game.

@Video_Game_King: We both subscribe to the same British sounding guy? Weird, if not totally impossible. It was the Singing Ninja Tank song at the beginning that immediately endeared me to the guy you posted. Nonetheless, if I'm going to watch a LP, it's going to be on an obscure RPG or strategy game that I haven't played myself. It's actually how I got interested in Wizardry 8, and look where that took me.

That is exactly what I was trying to do with this post. Get people to try just try and the do and keep doing and eventually becoming great at it. Also let me know when you make your first video I will be your first sub.

If I'm going to watch an LP, it's probably going to be of some game I've either already played, or don't plan to play in the future. It's kind of why I'm not watching his latest LP: because I know I'm going to stumble across that game in the future. Also, again, interesting games, like the Captain Novolin LP Diabetus did.

I'm actually up to part 4 of a Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines playthrough, I never got around to finishing the game, and I thought, I may as well do this. They suck, but hell if I care. I can never think of anything to say, and I hate my own voice.

Lol, but it does suck. I never know what to talk about, it's awkward talking to myself, and I hate the sound of my own voice, and my video quality currently sucks, because I'm still messing with settings in Vegas.

  • What equipment to use to get started and also how/when to video edit your footage? A lot of youtube let's plays fail instantly on these two things and even if they're good at talking it can't save their LP from being close to unwatchable.
  • Give an example of a good and bad let's play and give points why.
  • Give advice on deciding whether to do a LP blind or not.
  • Give a few examples of the different approaches and styles LPers can use to keep the viewer interested.
  • Show people that it takes practice to become a good LPer. Maybe pick a LPer's first and latest LP and talk about how they've improved.

Some more thoughts from an LP watcher:

  • Don't be annoying, loud, obnoxious, or overtly obscene.
  • NEVER talk over cutscenes/voice acting. Game dialogue is more important than your commentary.
  • Play at a normal pace. Don't speedrun or go super-slowly. It's nice watching how other people realistically play games, solving puzzles instantaneously (because you already know the solution) isn't fun to watch. It is fun to watch someone work their way through a puzzle.
  • Give an idea of what's going on in your mind - what are you thinking? why are you doing what you're doing? how do you feel? etc...
  • Play blind - if possible. Canned reactions are cringe-worthy. Also, playing blind is especially important in a horror or comedy game. It's interesting to see genuine reactions of others, and horror/comedy cannot elicit the same response if you've already played the game beforehand.
  • Linear games are often a good choice. Large open world games can take ages and a lot of time can be spent performing dull/menial tasks.
  • You don't need to be constantly funny, but you should be interesting.
  • Don't upload hours and hours of gameplay at a time. Upload small chunks over time.

  • OPTIONAL - Be British. Once again, this is optional.

I get slightly more talkative in later videos, and man. I'm going to have to re-record part 4.. youtube randomly decided to remove my ability to upload videos longer than 15 minutes and I didn't realize, and I've already deleted part 4 off my computer.

Just helping the OP out with a note.

No one is as good at Let's Plays as Slowbeef and Diabetus from Somethingawful.com fame. If you're new to this whole thing and want to know more about it watch some of their older stuff

I really enjoy the SNATCHER video lp they did.

I'm watching one of your videos, and I have to say that they're quiet as shit. I'm guessing it's because you haven't previously played the games you're playing, so you don't really have as much material. For comparison. here's my anime blog.

I think it helps being more than one person, between you (if you have a good chemistry) it means you can crack jokes no matter how bad they are, and always have someone there to play along, hopefully making it better. Obviously this too requires some form of skill but it's easier.

For example, I frequently watch the videos Chip Cheezum and General Ironicus put out and having seen them progress from their "Beyond Good and Evil" let's play to their current MGS4 let's play is amazing to say the least. You can't expect to be a rock star in your first video, but it will get easier as you do it. Just like a lot of other things, it's all a matter of growing used to it, and shaping it around who you are, rather than the opposite.

I've watched a couple LP videos on Youtube to get the feel of game mechanics or get past a part that makes me want to throw my controller out the window.  When I view them, I like listening to a calm voice. Improvised and personal material sometimes gets a bit much on certain ones.

A lot of the suggestions that were made would really improve an  LP video.

As someone who's been doing it for over 2 years now, here's some advice for dat azz:

Play with someone else if you can.

The easiest way to build up confidence and experience in recording playthrough videos is to have a good friend alongside willing to be there.  Although I would say to be careful who you choose, I think a close friend who shares a love of video games is a good choice.  The important thing about this is a partner allows jokes to be bounced off the other person, one person to be the straight man, or just conversations about things happening.  Besides it brings more brains to the table meaning more experience, more perspectives, more jokes.  That and someone can pick up the slack when one person feels done talking.

Develop your speaking skills.

Despite the easy-going nature of the videos and the people willing to watch them, a playthrough channel is the better on that isn't bogged down by bad accents, poor conversation or speaking skills, and other such impediments to clear communication.  Sometimes you can't help it but being confident over a microphone certainly helps.  This more or less applies to when you're alone but helpful regardless.  The more you get used to talking in situations such as on stage or in front of a camera certainly helps.

Give the people some quality footage.

Nothing ruins my desire to watch a playthrough like poor quality video.  There are logistical problems galore here but if you want people to care and give them some deserving footage, make sure you put some time and effort into making sure the final products looks and sounds clear enough for people to enjoy sitting down and watching.  Bad quality video, poorly recorded sound, or worse pointing a camera at a TV, are the things to avoid.

Know the games you're committing to playing.

This doesn't necessarily require that one person or all has to have played and finished the game in question.  However going in blind IS A BAD IDEA.  Mostly because some games aren't conducive to this format whether it's the genre or the fact that it's 200 hours long.  If you are going in blind for effect, know how long the game is and whether or not it's any good.  Sure that "so bad its good" game may have been fun for the first hour but for 7 more you'll regret it.

Don't rush the process.

Rushing the process isn't going to help anyone.  The one exception may be at the very beginning of a channel's life when a portfolio of videos for people to watch is important.  Otherwise give people small chunks of a game (~10 to 15 minutes) each day and give yourself a few days a week to take a break.  That lightens up your schedule and it isn't going to cause your fans to riot for something they're getting for free.   If you can't, don't rush the recording either.  Let it come naturally and don't try and came a billion games into two hours or force schedules around to make it work.  Certainly make room for it but that's why the small chunks model allows you to take your time and feel up for recording.  Nothing kills your mood like obligatory recording of a playthrough.

Cultivate your audience.

It is impossible to do something like this without audience feedback.  If you don't want a viewer base that leaves dumb/offensive comments or free loaders who comment once and never show up again, then I recommend responding to those who show iniative in watching and commenting on your videos.  Do this over time and people will notice.  This is why, despite over 550 subscribers, I'm happiest to please the 40 or so that watch our videos reliably.  It's those fans that matter and the ones that keep you going.  They can also be great sources of feedback.  Oh and don't just friend-for-friend or sub-for-sub because it devalues the focus of the channel and it's to keep track of what's going on.  Friend people who deserve to be considered such, subscribers are everyone else.

Be interesting and/or funny but don't force it.

The hardest task of all is avoiding the pitfall if just being a person that no one wants to listen to as they play.  This can literally be impossible depending on the person but let this idea be a guideline for asking yourself whether your contribution to the video matters.  Balance the commentary with the gameplay (if you're playing) because otherwise it would be a walkthrough or a podcast.   Keep in mind the game is half the reason people are watching so if the game is speaking for itself, then let it.  Don't be afraid to let the game ride on its own for a bit.  But keep in mind to steer back into the commentary periodically because the people might get bored and lose that connection of being alongside your playing. Whatever you do, let it come naturally because forcing jokes and debates isn't the point.

Associate yourself with other GOOD channels.

If you can help it, find yourself another channel that you can get to good terms with.  If you've followed my instructions then you're more or less farther along than most.  With that clout, a channel you're a fan of before or after you've started is more likely to care about your videos if they're good.  Once that relationship has been established (mutual watching, comments etc.) then fans from both channels can be aware of the other and you can build a larger community that way.  Besides shoutouts are really awesome when you get them.  It also opens the doors to record videos together in the future which is always cool.

Finally...

Do it live and in the same room if you can.

No matter how good you are, commentary isn't as natural and engaging to the gameplay if you're commenting over pre-recorded footage.  Now if you're recording with a co-commentator than it would be best if they sat there alongside.  Commentary over skype works just fine but it's not even close to the same and feels a bit detached.  Combine those two and you can get scenarios where people get on tangents, ignore the other, and generally go off the rails and makes for potentially awkward viewing.  If you must have only one or the other but never both if you can help it.  Very few can make it work but it's more often than not been an opportunity for unforeseen consequences.

" @Video_Game_King: Well, yeah.

High five to another Kiko subscriber. Kiko and Tobuscus are my favorite LPers out on YouTube.

@rb_man: Dude it would be cool if you made a joint guide with other users rather than do the blog approach. Find some LPers on the site to help you out and it might turn in to something really useful. If you need help with making guides let me know.

Playing with someone else = that's a problem. I can't set up minecraft servers. I will be getting Skype, and a laptop of my own. There are people like the yogscast that I envy as they always play multiplayer on minecraft. But, I was thinking, should I interact with my fans / subscribers by playing with them on their servers?

I'd love to know how else to connect to subscribers / VIEWERS. Btw, I still love the yogscast
