Games of the Year? 2019?????

As much as it feels like I spend a lot of time playing video games, it turns out I actually have trouble getting myself to do anything a lot of the time, including playing video games. That said, this year I actually felt like I had done enough that I wanted to get it written down that I had actually played things? I even actually finished a good amount of games this year! And some of those that I hadn't I wished I had gotten more into. But hey, hopefully I can stick with some of those ones more in the near future.

  • Chowder Man deserved better!!! Man, what a game. This game charmed the pants off of me and got me so quickly attached to the world and the people interacting with it. It drew me in with nostalgia and the perfectly tuned jank, and kept me interested with the incredible amount of worldbuilding. From the origins of everybody's favorite sport, trennis, to a complete alternate history of electronic music, including plentiful examples. You're more of an observer than anything, your primary form of interaction being issuing reports, and in fact the chat program is specifically not allowed to be used by Hypnospace Enforcers, yet I grew so attached to many of the characters anyways! When time moves forward, I was genuinely engaged in finding out what happened with the various users.

It's just such a living and vibrant world, and I'm gonna be thinking about a washed up rock star's magnum opus about shaving for a long, long time.

  • hey it turns out i hate exercise and keep wanting to do it anyways. First it was just the squats, then I unlocked WIDE squats, and then OVERHEAD squats and every one made me more sad than the last, but hey, I was doing them. The way that it builds the systems makes it really easy to trick me into doing things I hate of my own volition, incentivizing switching up the routine regularly, and just keeping me interested.

  • File under 'roguelikes i've beaten on the first attempt'. Haven't actually won a second time, interestingly enough. I kind of knew for the past couple of years that I'd probably really like this game, and for some reason I just never bit on it. But I picked it up on the Switch on a whim one day, and just instantly got way into it. I'm a sucker for paper deckbuilders, and this plays very well into the things I like about them, and expands on one of my favorite things: massive combos that let you have just unfeasibly huge turns. And just because I beat it on the first attempt doesn't mean I find it too easy, every single boss I faced had me down to where I think if I went one or two more turns, I would have been dead. Just, absolute nail biters. Super satisfying difficulty to contend with.

  • Speaking of roguelikes I beat on attempt number 1: this one doesn't count. Warrior-1 is a gimme, but also serves as a great introduction to the mechanics. Then you move on to the next character, and the next, and it's so impressive the way each character AND stage completely changes the way the game plays! I haven't actually... cleared the game fully, because I'm just real bad at one of the characters and can't beat their final level to unlock the final challenge, but it's been extremely enjoyable along the way.

  • I kinda rushed through this a little more than I would have liked, I admit, in an attempt to not get spoiled before the end the of the year, but this was still an engrossing experience overall.

Most games crashing and deleting my save data would cause me to never pick it up again, never mind it happening TWICE. And while it spoiled my mood a little bit, that ultimately didn't do anything other than remove my in-game notes, and not my out of game knowledge.

Plus, I wanted to find out more about the world! The planets are so clever, and the way the information leads into other information made for good investment into the process! The respawning and time limit was very occasionally frustrating, particularly at one point near the very end, but ultimately played well into the flow of the game. I don't think I was as hot on the game as I expected to, but y'know, by the end it still managed to make me feel feelings.

  • i have barely gotten into this one, having just completed two chapters, but it would be a crime if I didn't at least bring it up. It's been so charming so far, the music has been great, and the way it uses the Paper Mario style mechanics, but with its own spin on strategy has so far been very satisfying to play with, and it just seems like it'll get more interesting as it goes on. The plot quickly appears to be heading somewhere interesting, and I'm stoked to dedicate more time to it.

  • honk

There's not really a whole lot to say about this game, really. It's cute and fun and the way it rolls around to the reveal at the end is great, especially when you've forgotten about it from the beginning. Some of the puzzles were a bit janky, but any given well timed honk is always hilarious, and nobody can take the joy I get out of terrorizing a child away from me.

  • i'm so bad at this and only touch it every now and then but i just have to appreciate it. DoomRL is one of my favorite games of all time, and I'm so glad that it's got a spritual successor that doesn't have to be crushed under Bethesda's boot. It's missing a lot of the features that I liked about DoomRL, but I know those are on the way, and seeing it as it grows is fun, too. Maybe some day I'll be good enough to get past the second area......

  • look

    look

this is one of the games i actually played all the way through this year and even the bad disney worlds i find charming. Shoutout to Pirates world, because nobody appreciates enough the punchline, in which the Organization XIII person of the level is disappointed when Davey Jones's heart is just, y'know, the organ, and not like, a soul. It's fuckin great

also furry sora is cute ANYWAYS

  • I should get back to this. I went a good chunk through this, and only just waded into the tier 2 enemies stuff, but really enjoyed the loop of it. Once you have a lot of different tools available, strategizing around how you want to deal with the occupants of any given ship is really fun, and the panic when things go absolutely wrong and trying to desperately salvage it is honestly hilarious. The stakes are enough that you don't necessarily want to fail, but low enough that failure isn't too demoralizing thanks to the persistent upgrades system in place. It's very good at balancing the stress levels so it's kind of chill long term, but occasionally intense short term.
