Curious to know how much Australian's pay for video games?
I was in my local K-mart last evening and was gob-smacked at the price of certain crappy games.
Bare in mind too, the Aussie dollar is worth more than the US at the moment.
What kind of VAT do you have for videogames? In Finland we have 24% VAT on most goods, including games. I don't mind paying it in order to have a better country to live in.
Our tax (GST - good and service tax) is a flat 10 percent on everything. Tax included in price.
Thats a good point actually, i always forget that in most states in north america etc (the usual comparison) Tax is included after the sale price.
A lot of it is people charge what they can get away with and then just shrug and say "shipping", there doesn't seem to be anything stringent to regulate it. It became a big issue last year regarding all manner of generally electronic goods that were all marked up for no real reason.
People are payed higher wages here in general and the worth of the currency is considered differently, for example it's nothing to buy something like a bottled gatorade or vitamin water here for 5 dollars each, which is like three dollars higher than the states. It's not uncommon to go out for dinner and some drinks and walk out with a 100 - 200 dollar bill either, and it's not uncommon to get taxed 50 cents on every fucking dollar.
On the bright side crime mostly stays down and we generally don't have mentally disturbed lunatics raiding our garbage and shooting up our schools.
Steam uses localized pricing too.....
It still comes up cheaper than most at retail, some newer titles go for as little as 50 - 60 bucks depending on the publisher and then there's the steam sale factor. When you can get the occasional newish title at half to 75 percent off, and like year old games for as little as five bucks. You will never find a game for sale that cheap anywhere at retail.
