Does this allow me to maximize video without it minimizing when I do something on my other screen?

If so I'll subscribe right now and get it. I'm sick of the addon I use to make this happen becoming outdated every two months.

Can someone confirm if this is the case? I have the exact same problem whenever I'm trying to work but end up procrastinating.

If you have GPU capable of accelerating Flash, there is no advantage.  HTML5 x264 MP4 video will eventually have hardware acceleration support but it's a while off.  However, for non flash capable devices, like the iPhone and iPod Touch HTML5 is a necessity.

Check here. The downside is that you have to keep a copy of the hacked DLL somewhere in your computer, because Chrome updates stealthily and Flash may start minimizing in fullscreen again. You go to your AppData/Local/Google/Chrome folder and replace the newer file with the backup you made. Profit.

I already use something similiar than that, I was just wondering if HTML5 supports this on its own so I won't need to deal with rehacking, which while not a huge deal, is obnoxious.

@Pinworm45:  @gunslingerNZ:

The HTML5 video will maximise to the size of your browser window instead of doing a complete fullscreen.
So (on Chrome, at least) if you tell Chrome itself to go fullscreen, then hit the video's fullscreen button the video will stay fullscreen while you do other things.

@JJOR64: Chances are it won't. Firefox doesn't support the H.264 video that the new videos use.

Thanks to the OP for this. It makes a sub just that little bit more worthwhile.

Addendum:
Fullscreen HTML5 video won't stop your screensaver from appearing. Also there appears to be a bit of a performance hit.

This is fantastic - great work rufo.
So nice to be able to maximise inside a window; and have videos actually run smoothly for a change. My only concern is that Whiskey aren't getting the same metrics as they would from the Flash player - I suppose seeing as the quests are still triggered it's still OK though.

Rufo I fucking love you!  I can stream HD videos on my mac now without it sounding like it'll blow up.

Dude, thank you so damn much.  Wow, my CPU cores locks at 30%, compared to the 80% I used to get using Flash.

RUFO I LOVE YOU!

EDIT:  Full screen works on Safari!

Wow you actually sold a membership with this, I'm damn impressed!

Anyway, this is pretty awesome as I'd like to try to minimize my dependancy on flash as much as possible. Apparently every apple product I own hates it to death. I'm surprised Steve Jobs hasn't retroactively removed it from Safari in some devious update.

You don't have to use Flash, for example. The browser is capable of playing the video itself without any help from external programs.

Thanks for all the awesome feedback, everyone! A few responses to questions that have come up:

@Dany:
 Yup, all three formats work great! Just use the same buttons as before.

@JJOR64:  Unfortunately Firefox doesn't support H.264 video, which is the only video format that Whiskey posts. If Mozilla ever adds H.264, I'll be happy to get an extension running over there - but until then (or Whiskey starts encoding Ogg/WebM), you're stuck with Flash. Sorry. :-/

@SeriouslyNow: On Macs HTML5 video with QuickTime still uses less CPU then Flash, but absolutely, it's possible some people could have better performance using Flash instead of HTML5 video. If so, just disable or uninstall the extension - no harm done!

@Tyashki: HTML5 video performance is still highly variable, depending on your browser and platform. On my Mac, in Safari, HTML5 video is a huge difference - it uses far less CPU and runs much smoother, actually allowing HD videos to play back smoothly. In Chrome, though, it's still a tad choppy at large sizes. Your mileage may vary, but at least for me it's a far better experience.

@TheBeast: Actually, all of their player events are still triggered, so they should still get their metrics. Whiskey's Flash player code was really, really clean, so it was easy to hack in while maintaining nearly all the same functionality. (The only thing I'm not sure is supported are potential pre-roll ads for non-subscribers, hence the current subscribers-only check.)

Dave said they were gradually gonna move to a fully featured HTML5 site as time goes on and more and more people use HTML5 compliant browsers, so I'm wondering if they got something else planned for the video.

I really hope they don't ask you to pull it, this is the best thing I've gotten from being a subscriber aside from the mobile site (which I end up using more than the browser site).  This really is a godsend for us using OSX.  x.x

@KaosAngel: I actually asked Snider for permission in the post-Happy Hour chat and he said to go for it, so I think i'm in the clear. Obviously if they ask me to pull it, I will, but I'm hopeful that won't happen. I fully realize this will probably only be useful for ~6 months, but the experience for me as a fellow Mac user is so much better with HTML5 that I don't mind spending the effort :-)

@Jeffsekai: Yeah, Chrome was a bit choppy for me too. This is fully an experiment, so I won't have my feelings hurt if you go back to Flash. For a Mac on Safari, HTML5 video is definitely a better experience; for other browsers and platforms, it may not be. To each his own!

As one of the countless contributors and huge advocate of the ClickToFlash project on Safari, I hate loading Flash for video as how much of a hog of resources it can be for a simple system process. Actually GiantBomb was one of my very few whitelisted sites. I was about to make something similar, but more hacky and less polished like this is. Now I don't have to as this is perfect! Great work and keep it up!

I think my performance on my work laptop is not that much better viewing full screen HD video, and it's definitely not as good as downloading HD and playing in quicktime...  I like this idea, though.  I bet when Chrome acceleration really takes off this will be ideal.

I installed Chrome 7 in hopes that the GPU acceleration might improve full screen HD video, but I think it just wound up being framey in a slightly less laggy way than previous.  I hope Chrome video playback improves, because the fact that the flash version runs smoother demonstrates a real deficiency.

I think I'm still going to use this plugin by default, though, because I like how snappy the video loading is, and how your video loading progress remains in the web cache between page loads.

Thanks for making this!  It feels like you're helping nudge the internet further into the future.

@mccarron: As a huge fan of ClickToFlash, thanks for your work! I'd been using a covert bookmarklet for a long while to replace the player, but was thrilled when Whiskey rolled out full MPEG-4, since it meant I could do something a little more permanent...

@Clark: I'm running the same version of Chrome (though without a beta moniker) and haven't had any problems. I feel a bit silly for asking this, but are you sure you're logged in? If you're logged in (or not a subscriber), the extension simply won't load - and I actually ran into that myself, once...

@Mendelson9:
 Indeed, that's correct behavior for now. Google's still figuring out if they're going to do full-screen HTML5 video, as opposed to full-window. If they ever support it, I'll be sure to update the extension.

And, to everyone - thanks for all the awesome feedback. It's great to hear people are liking it! (Though it sounds like your mileage may vary in Chrome until Google speeds up their video support...)

If only the EVE Online browser supported extensions, it is based on Chromium. It would be nice if i could watch videos in while playing eve online.

So please implement native HTML5 video in the website.

@Clark: Huh. Weird. I don't have many other Chrome extensions installed, so maybe it's a conflict with another extension? If you can, could you bring up the Javascript console (under tools) and let me know if there are any error messages there? They'll be highlighted in red. Not a huge deal, but if there's a bug I'd love to make sure I fix it.

The only two things I would complain about when viewing HTML5 video in Chrome on a Mac is the inability to go completely fullscreen. Also when you pause the video and try to play it again, it goes black and I have to reload the page. Great programming otherwise!
