Games I Beat in 2012

Continuing from my list of games from 2011, let's see how many I can finish this year!

List items

  • Finish Date: January 6th

Goddamn the last level was so difficult. With persistence, me and my brother were finally able to vanquish the last boss. Lovely graphics and stupid amounts of bullets make this a classic of the genre!

  • Finish Date: January 7th

Fantastic achievement, really innovating what you can do with narrative in a game. Amazing music, fun combat with a dozen unique weapons, and just a great atmosphere. One of my favourite downloadables of all time.

  • Finish Date: January 11th

Hilarious continuation of the series, funnier than the first with lots of opportunity to poke fun at TV and fame. "They're probably hiding a cow!"

  • Finish Date: January 11th

Great Sonic game, all about running fast with plenty of challenges and classic 2D levels as well as modern 3D ones. Spoiled by a truly shitty final boss fight that feels as if it wasn't even tested.

  • Finish Date: January 12th

Interesting indie adventure game/visual novel set on an Amiga desktop where you dial into BBS boards and uncover a conspiracy... very original and fun!

  • Finish Date: February 3rd

A bit of a filler game in the grander scheme of Assassin's Creed, this still had some great moments and interesting mechanics. Not to mention the (albeit minor) plot progression. That tower defense minigame was pretty bad though. I'll probably keep going back to the multiplayer for a while, there's really nothing like it and it's been expanded considerably over Brotherhood.

  • Finish Date: February 14th

Excellent little brick-destruction game with some nice physics and gameplay... It got pretty tricky towards the end!

  • Finish Date: February 20th

Yeah... it's definitely not for everyone (the sex scenes in particular render this a no-go for most western players) but I thought it had interesting characters and a believable story with some good emotional moments... Though I still find it weird that I played a dating sim about disabled girls.

  • Finish Date: March 16th

Distinctly average shooter with some flashes of really interesting design; I really liked the vertical cover system and some of the flying scenes and environments, but awful checkpointing, boring enemies, and lame weapons make this a game to probably not bother with.

  • Finish Date: April 11th

Easily one of the best fighting games of all time, a pretty good story mode (albeit with a few ridiculously hard fights near the end) and a good variety of characters; I'll be playing this one against my friends for a long time to come!

  • Finish Date: May 4th

Awesome follow-up to Dead Space, great improvements in the weapons and movement, and a cool conclusion(?) to the story.

  • Finish Date: May 11th

Sadly sub-par entry into the series, fails to even measure up to 2008's Prince of Persia, let alone the Sands of Time trilogy. A few mildly interesting powers, but dull combat and uninventive puzzles make this a pretty mediocre offering.

  • Finish Date: May 28th

Surprisingly good crime-shooter thing. Nice atmosphere and pretty decent missions, but it didn't really need to be free-roaming; there's nothing to do other than the missions! Also the checkpointing is really bad, you can lose 15 minutes of shooting to one death.

  • Finish Date: June 8th

Interesting, atmospheric and emotional game/interactive-story. Lovely visuals, really excited to learn that the developers: thechineseroom, are working with Frictional on the next Amnesia!

  • Finish Date: August 20th

Another fun episode of Sam & Max, but one or two of the puzzles had kind of silly solutions which I ended up having to google. On to the next one!

  • Finish Date: August 25th

Very enjoyable shooter from Relic, does a good job of making you feel like a Space Marine, but gets pretty hard towards the end! Despite a few flaws, still definitely worth playing!

  • Finish Date: September 2nd

Awesome game, hilarious writing and slick controls, definitely gonna play through this again at some point to see the different endings. You should play Saints Row: The Third.

  • Finish Date: November 10th

Interesting game, but really wore thin over the last few hours, I just got sick of the endless combat. Also the ending was a bit of a bummer/DLC grab.

  • Finish Date: December 14th

Great game, fantastic mo-cap work to make the characters believable and simple, fun, platforming and combat. One thing I disliked was the fact that the amazing abandoned city aesthetic was thrown out in favour of metal corridors in the later parts of the game.
