SeriuzBiznus: Favourite Games Played in 2021

A mixture of new and old games that I enjoyed in 2021.

List items

  • Despite being a spinoff, I'm still a little surprised at the lack of attention this game received, especially considering the popularity of Persona 5. I haven't really played a musou game before but I had an absolute blast with Strikers. The familiar weakness based attacks combined with fast paced movement, character switching and combo stacking made this the most enjoyable Persona combat I've ever played.

The storyline was worthy of a mainline Persona and though I missed the social links, the interactions between characters had some fantastic dialogue and vastly improved upon the personalities of the crew - in particular those that got little screentime in Persona 5.

The soundtrack was outstanding too. Heavy guitar riffs and remixes of the original soundtrack with a few new tracks to boot. Even though I played this at the start of the year, it's stuck with me throughout and makes its way to my number one spot.

  • When Control came to Game Pass, I had to play it. I was still waiting on my new PC and left with my aging GTX 970/i5 4690k rig at the time, my only option was dust off the launch Xbox One and hope the experience was playable.

Defintely not the optimal experience, yet despite framerate issues and painful load times, Control still managed to impress me with its story, style and gameplay. I can't wait to replay this again on my RTX 3080 and truly appreciate what Control has to offer.

  • I'm still making my way through the campaign but I can already guarantee this will be high on my list. This feels like the Halo I grew up with whilst adding so many quality of life improvements and new dynamic mechanics that make every shot, grapple and melee an absolute joy to play. I haven't grinned this much at a Halo game since I was a kid with my face pressed against a CRT with the original Halo: Combat Evolved.

  • Another game that pushed my Xbox One to its limits. I ended up dropping the difficulty because the combat was near-impossible with the unsteady frame rate. The Respawn DNA is strong though and like Control, I definitely need to replay on my PC to fully appreciate it.

Storywise, I had a lot of fun. The main protagonist was by far the least interesting character but the rest of the crew more than made up for his blandness. Nightsister Merrin is an absolute badass.

  • This is the second From Soft game I've beaten (Bloodbourne being the first) and the hyper-agression definitely suits me more than the patient grind in Dark Souls. Grappling about and flinging swords and shinobi tools was just the kind of mechanics I needed to keep me entertained through the challenge and frustration of tough bosses. I still prefer Bloodbourne but this was another great experience and felt like a true achievement when I completed it.

  • I don't like card games but I love Inscryption. I would not have even touched this were it not the Waypoint's diabolically wild streams, so I have to give them my sincere thanks for leading me to pick this up and go on my own dive into insanity.

  • I haven't even completed the first game, so I'm kinda cheating here, but honestly Mass Effect deserves to be on every top game list ever. BioWare did good.

  • I ended up going full murder-mode because I didn't enjoy the stealth mechanics. Probably not the best way to play this game, but I still had a good time.

  • I gave up eventually on Hades but the time I spent with it was worthwhile. The combat feels fantastic and the only reason I couldn't stick with it is because I don't think I'm good enough to beat it.

  • I bouced hard off Undertale but the reduced difficulty and grind in Deltarune has made for a much more pleasant experience. I'm not in love with the Toby Fox style as much as most people it seems, but the characters were fun and I had some laughs while playing. I'll definitely give the next chapters a go whenever they release.
