SeriuzBiznus: Games That Got Me Through the Year 2020

Fuck this year sideways.

You'd think being stuck at home would mean I played more games than usual, but as my bedroom became a prison cell and my mind fell into a black hole, I had very little motivation to do anything. I've played roughly 1/3 of the number of games I typically play per year and of those, none were technically "new". Regardless, here's my list of the games I was able to play and enjoy in 2020.

List items

  • There's not much I can say that hasn't been expressed far more eloquently by other people like Michael Higham, but on a personal note, this game has been a rock this year. Persona always finds a way to capture me completely and P5R is no exception. They can steal my heart any day.

  • This one took me by surprise because the first time I tried MM on the 3DS I *hated* it. The time mechanics felt stressful and I couldn't wrap my head around the old controls. This time I played the original N64 version on PC and despite the stiff gameplay, I had such a wonderful experience. I used a guide and a few mods which relieved the frustration of the time mechanics and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the fantastic story, characters and music.

  • It's not the first time I've played P3P and it won't be the last. This is the definition of a comfort game for me. I live in hope of a PC port that's a hybrid of FES and P3P. Geeting to play as FemC with all the benefits of FES would be such a dream.

  • I haven't actually finished this yet so I feel like a bit of a cheater, but damn I hope I can get my brain in gear to finish this soon. It might be my all-time favourite Zelda when I complete it.

  • Replayed the campaign on Legendary Co-op with my best mate. Always such a great time and it was awesome having some form of daily contact with my friend while we played.

  • I unashamedly love this franchise. The games are always janky as hell but the characters, combat and puzzles continue to be a blast in 3. Fury kicks ass.

  • Finally picked this up on Switch and it still lived up to the hype. Without a doubt the best 3D Mario game I've played.

  • I had a bit of a Mario marathon at the start of the year. I dug out the NES and SNES classic mini consoles so I could play the original games for the first time. I'll never be a great Mario player but I was so happy to finally beat this iconic game.

  • As above, this was my first time beating the original Super Mario Bros. It was a challenge, especially for someone like me that's lousy at platformers, but I had a brilliant time thanks to the QoL features of the NES classic.

  • Saw this randomly on Game Pass and decided to check it out. While I wasn't too keen on the mechanics, I though the story and voice acting was brilliant. Definitely worthy of a spot on the top 10.
