Game of the Year 2016

Also known as "10 Games from 2016 that shinboy630 likes more than Uncharted 4" because when it comes to Naughty Dog, I like to be spiteful.

Note: There are some games, like The Last Guardian and Fire Emblem, that would likely have been on this list if I had played more of them. However, I did not, so they are not!

List items

  • Simply the best game of the year, and the best competitive shooter in the last few years. Constant post-release support, a cast of memorable characters and intricate maps that are always expanding. Also not to be overlook, the Play of the Game feature is such a simple idea that I can see spreading to other games.

  • I love building and designing things in sims, and this fuses the customization features & workshop support of something like Cities: Skylines with just a dusting of that Roller Coaster Tycoon nostalgia.

  • I completely acknowledge the flaws in the pacing and in the back half of the main story missions. However, they do not keep me from loving the combat, the open world, and my 4 lovely anime boys. I plan on going back to finish the platinu...THAT'S IT! I've discovered a new recipe!

  • Layers new features and lore on top of a Dark Souls I base. Some of the better boss fights in the series that maintain a pretty consistent quality throughout.

  • SPECIFICALLY BLOOD & WINE since it was the 2016 release. Contained enough content to be it's own RPG (20-30 hours worth). Featured great little call backs to the previous games and books and wraps up Geralt's story nicely without it being too tidy to fit the tone of the world.

  • Looks great and features the same run and gun action-platforming the series has featured for almost a decade and a half at this point. A return to form after the disappointment of Into the Nexus.

  • Game Freak finally managed to strike a good balance between modern QoL improvements and features, as well as shaking up the formula just a bit, while still maintaining the feel of a classic Pokemon adventure.

  • It came out in PC this year, so I am counting it! An improvement from the already good 1st game in almost every way. The addition of proper puzzle-y tombs is what really put it over the top for me.

  • Once the performance issues on PC got (more or less) ironed out, I enjoyed what I played of the intricate level design and snappy stealth-action.

  • DOOM! It's DOOM, it's good.
