PC Gamers, Do you use a Controller?

After purchasing Jamestown on Steam and not having much fun playing it with the keyboard controllers, I went out to Best Buy and picked up a wired 360 controller (the Razer Onza Tournament Edition). Not only is it really a great controller (that I now also use as my primary controller when playing games on my 360), but in many ways, it has revitalized a lot of my PC gaming experience. Things that I never would have bought on PC before like Just Cause 2, Darksiders, etc. are now entirely within my realm of comfort when playing with this controller. It is like having all the ease of us found in a console (and being able to lay back on my couch while I play) mixed with the customizability and cheapness of many PC games.

Obviously there are always bad ports but I have found a lot of games to work instantly and flawlessly with a Windows controller.

Does anyone else use a set up similar to this, playing some types of games (FPS, RTS, etc.) with the mouse and keyboard and others (third-person games, platformers, Shoot 'Em Ups) with a controller? I'm really excited about my PC again (although I've always been a PC gamer to some extent) and I just want to know if I am late to the party on this whole controller-PC combo or not.

I pretty much only use a PS3 controller for certain racing and sports games.

Note that I'm still asking for somebody to tell me how WASD is as good as, or better than, an analog stick for something like Prince of Persia the Sands of Time.
Camera control is always better with the mouse. Faster, better.

@xobballox: Haha, that's fine. While the hacking and quicktime events are certainly easier while playing it with mouse and keyboard, there is something about the grappling hook and parachute combo that I love controlling with the 360 controller.

Heh, I'm the opposite, didn't fully like the parachute and hook with the controller but love it with the K+M.

Definitely. I am with you 100%. I use the 360 controller on games like Resident Evil 5, Darksiders, Trine, all of my racing games, Batman: Arkham Asylum, etc. Obviously, for all FPS games I still use KB & M but the controller is definitely great when I want to race or play a third-person game.

Yep, although I seem to do it pretty much at random. There's no one type of game I like playing with a controller I just sometimes end up doing it.

Indeed I have, I got a wired Xbox 360 pad to use with both the PC and Xbox 360. I use it primarily with Just Cause 2 and platform games like Super Meat Boy on the PC. Other than that I use it for vehicle controls for flight games or whatever.

My main games use keyboard and mouse on PC but using a controller is something I am not adverse to.

When you have fairly messed up wrist, thanks to skateboarding and several hours of intense guitar playing every day for the last 15 years, the controller is way more comfortable. But hey, to each their own. Whatever floats your boat, so to speak. Just don't take it online in a FPS. Those K+M players will mega-murder you!!

@believer258: Mouse movement gives as much or more precision than a stick, Hold W and steer with mouse. I only use A and D in games that let you strafe otherwise they are useless.

If I was going to use a controller, why in the hell would I bother playing on the computer? Yeah, higher resolution is great, but slightly lower resolution on a 65" monitor instead of a 30" monitor is much better and a massive audio system over a PC setup is a better experience. About 85% of the point of playing a game on the PC is WASD+M.

for pretty much everyhting except FPs and RTS i do. This day and age theres no reason not to have a 360 controler on your pc (or any, but a 360 one is so much easier to just plug and play)

Well a big part of it for me comes down to the fact that you can get a lot of these controller-type games like Darksiders as I mentioned earlier on Steam for like $6.50 (like last week's sale) when you could never find the console version at such a low price at Gamestop even if it was used. Also, I game a lot with headphones and don't like to always be hogging the television in my apartment (since there are others around a lot). That said, that is only my specific situation. If you've got a killer setup and the money to buy the games and such then I can definitely understand skipping the PC, if you don't have a similar setup there..

All the time, for racing games or third person games, things that I'm more comfortable using those controls with.

You think wrong. All those games work perfectly with a mouse and keyboard. The controller comes in use when you emulate old console games.

Other than Tomb Raider I've had completely terrible experiences trying to play those games with a mouse and keyboard.

I disagree HEAVILY.  Mod-ability, several games look a LOT better on PC, you have every control choice you could want for all genres, still are great PC exclusives, MMOs are almost entirely on PC with the exception of things like PSO and DCUO, all your games are on the system (most of the time) you don't have to go search your game shelf and put it in, you can do away with buying physical copies of games already, customize-ability of everything, and several other things.  Also who says you can't have a great audio set-up for your PC?  (Not to mention you can hook your PC up to a TV if you really want to, but I prefer to have my 24" 1080p monitor right in my face)  My brother has a big-ass, expensive surround sound system hooked up to his PC.  I prefer good headphones though, so I don't.

The KB/M is the best for shooters and so I never use a 360 controller for shooters.

I do use it for other genres of games though but it usually depends on the game.

Right now, I can't decide whether I should play Magicka with a KB/M or a controller. I like direct control but I also like having every spell easily accessible.

Alot, mouse and keyboard are great, but an the Xbox 360 controller is great and I almost always use it when possible.  Also, controller has vibration, triggers, and 360 degree movement, something mouse and keyboard can't do.

Yes, a lot of games today are built for the console crowd first and then ported to PC so using a controller for those games is way better. Also I enjoy playing racing games, fighting games, action games(DMC, dead space) etc. with a controller. Of course mouse and keyboard is my favourite for FPS, RTS, adventure and CRPG. There's no reason you can't enjoy the best of both world on PC.

I use my Dualshock 3 for racing, platform, dual-stick shooters (Beat Hazard, Geometry Wars, etc.), and pretty much any third-person game. Works great.

For everything else, kb/m all the way.

I've been using a controller for Alice: Madness returns and Dungeon Siege 3 because they're pretty much unplayable with mouse and keyboard. Otherwise I always use mouse and keyboard. I just prefer the fluidity of movement with a mouse. Can't seem to get that with a controller.

Use a PS3 pad for Transformers that I got on sale, way easier for using abilities / transforming / fighting all at the same time.

I still trip over keys on this keyboard and I've had it almost a year now...

I don't have a controller cause i don't have any current gen consoles. and i feel just buying one feels like a waste.

Beside controls are mostly fine.
I played darksiders completely with mouse and keyboard and it was great.

Nah it's all of precision of movement, I can't stand playing games with platforming elements when all I have for movement are some digital keys and not a proper analog joystick like the games were made for.

A bad port would work better with a controller, since it's a port.

Anyway, I use one for games that play better with one. Racing, third person character action (Darksiders, Assassin's Creed, Batman: Arkham Asylum, etc), dual joystick shooters, etc.

You think wrong. All those games work perfectly with a mouse and keyboard. The controller comes in use when you emulate old console games.

Just as FPS games work perfectly with a controller.

Personally, for third person adventure games and the like, it feels much more natural moving around with an analogue stick than it does with WSAD. But opinions, etc.

O_o No, it doesn't. KB+M doesn't work only in fighting games and platformers like Mario. Everything else works perfectly. Customization is power. I always change the controls.

But it still doesn't give you analogue movement, it's like going back and playing Mass Effect with a d-pad. Yeah, it works fine.. just not as fine.

If you prefer it, knock yourself out. But I'll never understand this superiority complex many PC gamers have.

Whatever sensitivity is gained due to an analog movement stick is lost due to the translated nature of the controls. By translated I mean mechanically, as in if you want to turn 360 degrees, you move the thumbstick to a position and hold it there until you've achieved the full turn, then release. With a mouse there's no mechanical translation as what you do with your hand is what happens on screen, pretty much 1:1 (unless you're insane and have mouse acceleration on).

Dual thumbsticks feel like controlling a tank, which would be cool if all games were tank games.

Do need more tank games, though.

Sure.

I play The Witcher 2 with a wireless 360 controller (same with a lot of 3rd person games).

I play Arma II, DCS A-10C, Black Shark, etc. with my Saitek X52 Pro HOTAS, Rudder Pedals, and TrackIR 5.

I play fighting games with a SF4 TE Stick.

Nothing wrong with controllers.  The main draw of the PC is the ability to use whatever controllers you want.  I use every key on the keyboard, a mouse, joystick, pedals, and headtracking every time I play Arma II -- couldn't imagine playing without them.

When I first played GTA4 I wasn't used to a controller, so I would drive with one, run around with one, etc., but when it came time to make a difficult shot with the sniper rifle I could just reach up and grab the mouse.  Pretty nice best of both worlds type compromise.

I own a Mac and during the steam sale I bought Splinter Cell Conviction, I had a heck of a time with the keyboard and mouse and would have greatly appreciated some sort of gamepad support. I believe the pc version has it, I just wish that the mac version did. I don't believe that the mac keyboard and mouse are set up properly to play games like that one.

If a controller is officially supported by the game, then I'll play with a controller. I play TF2 or Just Cause 2 with a controller since it's supported, but I play Dragon Age: Origins or Battlefield with KB/M since they don't have controller support.

Depends on the game. Played fallout 3 the other day with the 360 controller. I did so because I thought: why the hell not. Liked how the interface was easily streamlined for the 360 controller, whereas on the pc, I have to (or haven't found a way to not do this) move the mouse to everything. I hate when I can't navigate with keys. So much.
