GOTY 2014

10 Games That Probably Suck

List items

  • I haven't had as much fun with any single game this year quite like Jazzpunk. It might only be amazing in one run, but that 2 hour stretch of time was the best thing I've experienced all year.

  • Take two parts Ultima 7, one part Lands of Lore, and throw in a pinch of humor and you've got the best RPG of this year. The encounters and creativity of everything in the game makes it a strong contender for GOTY. It's also probably the best RPG in the last five years, if I'm being honest.

  • Fun from top to bottom. It's incredibly stupid for 90% of the game and the other 10% is really ham-handed melodrama, but this is an amazing game nonetheless.

  • This would be higher had I actually finished it this year. As with many of these tile-based blobbers I hesitate to call it an RPG and would rather lump it in with a puzzle game with adventure elements. And y'know what? It's really, really good.

  • Despite a plethora of issues - mostly relating to PvP balance - I think Dark Souls II deserves a little recognition here for sapping 100+ hours of my life this year.

  • It's XCOM. I love XCOM, and though this has some serious longevity issues after around 20 hours into your campaigns, I can't get enough friggin' XCOM.

  • I hate putting an Early Access game here, but I've honestly enjoyed every second of this game that I've put in. I'll forever miss the headless shadow, though.

  • Another RPG that could have been absolute trash, but thankfully came out pretty okay. The recycled assets are totally fine in the context of a very fun world to explore. I wish the encounter design wasn't just middling...

  • It has a deathly, weighty atmosphere that I generally don't like in my games, but This War of Mine is also one of the most compelling sim-likes that I've ever played. If I finished it before the year was out it might make it higher on my list.

  • This at least deserves a mention, I think. In part it's because I haven't played that many new games this year. It's not very good, and that makes me sad, but Wasteland 2 definitely makes a few strong attempts with good flavor text and decent encounters. Sadly, literally everything else ranges from just okay to quite unbearable.
