Number Six

Today, Heavy Weapon came out on PSN.  It's a dual joystick Metal Slug meets Geometry Wars type of auto-scrolling shooter.  Pretty fun so far.  And the trophies are hella easy.

Anyways, right now I'm #6.. in the world!!!  Although probably only 20 people have played online so far, lol...

I beat the zombies

And they did not eat my brains.

Ok, once.  But I wasn't using it at the time!

Anyways, fun game, though pretty easy.

Now, I'm going to continue The Witcher: Enhanced, Valkyria Chronicles, and Wipeout HD.  I should be flying through them since I have a lot more free time.  Over half done with Valkyria Chronicles as it is.  Wipeout is pretty much limited to playing when the Euro's are online.. which is about 5-6pm my time.  There are a lot more European players than American.

The Impulse Buy Equation

I think I've figured out my logic for impulse buying things.  This applies to video games, movies, clothes, etc.

<= $10, and looks interesting (no prior knowledge of product needed) -> impulse buy
$10 to $20 and looks interesting  -> check funds and schedule buy at later point, if needed
>$20 and 50% off or more, and I've been thinking about purchasing an item for >1 month -> impulse buy

Otherwise check reviews & think about it.

So yeah, I bought Plants vs. Zombies and it's a fun game.  Totally worth it.

In other news: Defense Grid is $5 on steam this weekend.  Two impulse tower defense buys in-a-row!

Gift Card... FIGHT!

Hey all.

I have been playing games but nothing really interesting to say about them.  100% trophies on Noby noby boy.  Umm... beat RE5 on veteran and got unlimited ammo for like 4 guns.  Done with that game.  Flatout on PC with a PS3 controller via USB.  Trying to get the 50-person kill in Wipeout trophy.  They updated the server browser on Wipeout so it's easier to get in a game, though you have to wait a bit more and there are more options now.

My next exam is coming up in about a month, so I'm studying like mad.  Playing a little CS:source during the late hours sometimes.

So... the title.  I have a Gift Card... it is a reward from my credit card point.  $100 to spend with no regrets or consequences.  Suggestions?

I'm thinking Rhythm Heaven.  Should I save it for something to come out later?  Or both.  All ideas are welcome, as long as they are things that Sears carries (assume most new release games are available).

Rare Find: Ikaruga

Went out to find Persona 4 yesterday and it looks like every no store is keeping anything in stock for inventory purposes.  So P4 is nowhere to be found.  They probably didn't keep many copies of the game from the start as it was.  But they had a used copy of Ikaruga at the evil store.  (you know which one)

Except I'm having troubles playing it in my Wii.  Well *was* having troubles.  I upgraded my WiiKey firmware and configured the Wii to read DVD's at 3x speed instead of 6x, which I think helped with the reading errors.  Some of my other games (also legit) were having some trouble reading as well.  But now it seems fine.  Ikaruga is pretty sweet.  Wish I had a Wavebird controller or a second controller though.  Probably not worth it for just the three gamecube games that I have.  But might be nice for some Virtual Console games.

So I ended up having to order off of amazon, and it's already shipped.  Until then I'll try to take down F.E.A.R.2, which is now the game that I'm closest to beating.  BTW, I finished off Red Alert 3.  And I thoroughly disliked the Japanese campaign.  The other two were great, though.

Resident Evil 5 continues to be a great game.  Now that I've got an decent weapon, it's getting easier to conserve ammo.  I've really tricked out the pistol to have more power.  But I've neglected Sheva's weapon!  You can upgrade her's as well.  So I should start helping her.  I've spent quite a bit on my own.. mostly on power and crit upgrades, which matter the most for my playing style.  I'm methodical and usually don't have a problem with reload times or capacity, especially with the MP5.  I should probably pick up the shotgun too.  But I've been pretty good even with just the pistol.  That power really helps for the bosses.  The boss at the end of 2-1 is pretty cool.

RE5 initial impressions

RE5 seems to be very similar to RE4, especially in gameplay (which is the most important part).  I've only played through parts 1-1 and 1-2, because 1-1 was actually pretty tough.  There is a pretty epic battle at the start of the game, and it was quite difficult when I was trying it on split-screen Co-op with a friend.  We were getting some good strategy going and getting further and further each time, but eventually I just played it with the AI and got past it.  Remember to use those gas barrels!

So yeah, the shooting and survival aspect is similar to RE4 in all significant ways.  Did RE4 enemies drop items after you killed them?  I can't remember.  Well they do in RE5.  Which helps a lot because otherwise I'd be out of ammo really fast.  You can upgrade the gun and buy more guns between levels.  I really like that element in the game.  Kind of an RPG feel with your gun.  Still get ratings at the end of each level, too.. which I like.

So is it scary?  No, not at all like F.E.A.R. 2 or the first three Resident Evils.  Those games were awesome for their eerieness and surprises.  Especially the first game.  But that game was kind of unique even compared to RE2 and RE3.  In RE1 you were trying to figure out wtf was going on.  In RE2 and RE3, you were just trying to survive.  In RE4 and RE5, you are trying to kill stuff.  That's the difference.  The game is much more about combat.  But the one thing that stays throughout the series is the "OH SHIT RELOAD RELOAD HES COMING" factor.  RE5 is tense like the series is known for, because your gun will not take out an enemy in one hit.  Because of that, you find yourself surrounded by mobs more often than you thought could happen (because of your skill at shooting, of course).  I wish the enemies didn't do the slow-walk -> run up 10 feet -> slow-walk.  Seems kind of cheap.  They should always be walking slowly IMO.  These aren't the L4D zombies/infecteds.

There is a *little* bit of strategy involved.  And that separates it from other games like F.E.A.R.2.  In F.E.A.R., you need tactics in shooting, as in Call of Duty games.  But in RE, you need tactics in conservation.  There is a tug-of-war battle between trying to kill everyone that you see ASAP because you want them to stay away, and wanting to conserve ammo and take your time shooting to get the headshots while letting them get closer.  Because of that mental battle, the player is constantly second-guessing their stance between the two extremes and having to adjust as one strategy starts to fail.  But in RE, the difficulty is enough that there is no clear answer besides trial and error.

If you like RE4 and not sick of the same thing,  you will like RE5, IMO.  The co-op is probably a lot better online than split screen.  It's a little too small of a window to be able to do headshots easily (and this is on a 42" hdtv).  But having the AI controled player doesn't seem any better or worse.  She seems to be a pretty good sidekick so far.  The one noticeable improvement is that you now look/use/equip items in real-time.  This really adds to the tension of a hectic situation.  Though usually if you run away far enough you can heal up and reload before they catch up to you.  Also, the graphics are good, but not MSG4 or PC-level, of course.

I recommend the game.  I don't see how anyone who has liked RE before would not like this game.  I read/watched the G4 review and can understand what he says.  He provided constructive criticism and it is certainly worth listening to if you are the developers.  But honestly, I don't think those points affect whether or not a player will enjoy the game.

This is just based on the first couple parts of the game.

I CAN'T STOP BUYING

OK, so apparently Best Buy is evil.  They entice me to spend all of my money on games.  Not such a bad thing????   Ahhhhhh

They keep putting awesome games on the 50% off rack.  And I keep buying them.  I need to stop.

But anyways, here's what I got today (also used $10 off in BB reward coupons):

  • Resident Evil 5 (PS3)
  • N+ (DS) for $10
  • Dragon Quest V (DS) for $20

And allllllllllmost bought Disgaea 3 for PS3, which would have been $25.  But I figured I should play Valkyria Chronicles first.

Media overload this weekend.

p.s. I took my lunch to work everyday this week... so saving money... that makes up for it right?!?!??

Another Batch of Games

More games that I'm picking up this week.  My brother works at Sears (or does until the end of the month) and lets me know when PS3 games go on clearance.  So the first three I'm picking up for cheap:

  • Heavenly Sword ($25)
  • Buzz Trivia ($25)
  • Condemned 2: Bloodshot ($20)
  • Red Alert 3: Uprising (if it's out on steam right away?)
  • Resident Evil 5

My order from yesasia.com arrived and I'll pick it up tomorrow.  Only one game in it: Ouendan 2.  The rest is music and blurays.

Haven't played anything in a week since I was out of town.  I'm probably one good night away from beating Red Alert 3 and F.E.A.R.2.  I'm just as far behind on my Netflix cue.  Back to watching Evangelion.  (ps. it's pretty good, even though I'm not a big anime fan)

EDIT: just tried to finish RA3.... and I'm so pissed at this game.  The controls are bad, but forgivable until the AI sucks.  The enemy AI has way too big of an advantage over me.  The auto-attack AI sucks for the player.  UGHHHHH.  Screw this game.  The allied and russian campaigns are fine... but the japanese one is broke.

Chi-ca-go

So I'm past the third day of my seminar in Chicago.  One and a half day left.  Met some good people here.  I drove out here.  Listened to The previous two bombcasts along the way, which is a pretty good way to pass the 4 hours on one road with nothing but fields.

Wanted to mention that I just saw The Watchmen and it was pretty awesome.  Good action scenes.

Also, Michigan might make it to the NCAA tournament if they win a game or two and/or get lucky.

I'll get back to playing games when I get back home!
