Best of 2010

SnoopYTimes: Best of 2010

During my Christmas break, I was able to get my hands on a few games I missed listed below, and I am still playing them.  But I am satisfied with the best of 2010 list... for now.

Honorable Mentions:

Enslaved: Journey to the West

Enslaved makes up for its technical short comings with its great voice actors and pretty decent gameplay mechanics. The story was great, but I could not tell if the game was taking itself seriously by just slapping a stupid twist at the end and just calling it a day. Definitely the most unsatisfying ending this year.

Vanquish

Super Street Fighter IV

NBA 2k11

Super Meat Boy

God of War III

Games I Wish I Had Time to Play:

Limbo

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX

Starcraft 2

Call of Duty Black Ops

Fallout: New Vegas

Splinter Cell Conviction

NFS: Hot Pursuit

List items

  • Rockstar show their big guns once again. The heavyweights in story telling continue to impress with this great western based video game. The much improved gameplay formula from GTAIV, and add in great voice work, this game tops my best of 2010.

  • So how do you step up from crazy to just plain insane? Platinum games will show you exactly how with Bayonetta. Bayonetta has set the bar on what action games should be in this generation by taking every idea that sounds like fun and just throw it into a game.

  • The second installment of the mass effect trilogy brings a much improved game experience by refining the shooting and almost perfecting the game engine. The highlight of the game is, once again, the elaborate fiction behind the mass effect universe. The interesting quests and locale make this the best rpg to play this past year.

  • It seems as if Ubisoft came out of no where and just decided to release the best Assassin's Creed game in the series. This game seems like a preparation for Assassin's Creed 3, and Ubisoft used it to work out the junk from the first two games in the series. While I'm still confused about the name selection, Brotherhood is a great, if not the best, addition to the series.

  • The charm and character Deadly Premonition radiates is just straight up dangerous. Not only did I watch other people play the game 3 times, but I also finished the game 3 times! Deadly Premonition is just another example of the hidden gems a Japan developer can come up with by just throwing out ideas. It is not the best playable game in this top 10, but it is the most memorable. Francis York Morgan and friends are able to come together and help make it one of my top 5 games of this year.

  • Before playing The Devil's Playhouse, I was completely oblivious of any Telltale games. I did not know what to expect from Telltale's newest adventure featuring the bunny and the dog. Suddenly, Baby Amelia Earhart became my new favorite character. The excellent and comedic writing is sometimes hard to accomplish in games now, but Telltale has a way of making these characters enjoyable to watch and listen. Though corny at times, you will find yourself laughing your ass off to Sam & Max.

  • I am not much of a fan of anything Halo. None of the games in the series were able to keep my attention for more than the length of their campaigns. Halo: Reach changed that. The extremely addicting multiplayer kept me staring at a TV for hours on end. The new additions, such as the jetpack, changed the game, but the true halo feeling was still there.

  • It only took Gran Turismo 5 six years to be completed, plus the additional 2 weeks (most likely influenced by John Vignocchi). Or maybe it is the 3 intro movies at the beginning of the game that took up half of the dev time. So that means this game is the greatest driving simulator ever made...right? Maybe not, but it is Gran Turismo. While it doesn't innovate like it was speculated, Gran Turismo 5 is a terrific game.

  • I had to place Alan Wake in the top 10 of 2010 mainly because it was able to generate a great atmosphere. Alan Wake was able to put the light and shadow technology to good use to create tense moments in game. Add in the mysterious story elements and you have your self one of the best stories of 2010.

  • I couldn't help but add this game on my top 10 list. Hated by most. Loved by few. Final Fantasy XIII came out this year just to satisfy my JRPG hunger. With the lack of Japanese role playing games, and the splurge of western rpgs(thanks to Bioware, Obsidian, and Bethesda) Final Fantasy XIII was there for me. I thoroughly enjoyed Final Fantasy even though the game finally let itself open at the end. The satisfying battle system and the gorgeous graphics made me want to hug the game case even more.
