Hey NetherRealm you guys aren't making arcade games anymore

I remember the days of fighting games, or video games in general as single serving arcade games.  Back in these days games were harder.  Often in an attempt to pump you dry of quarters.  It kinda sucked, but at least it could be justified from a business standpoint.  By making the game hard they forced you to continue paying in order to complete the game.  Sometimes it even felt like the computer was cheating to win, but hey, that came with the arcade territory.

Games have come a long way since those days but now i'm left with a single question.  Why are fighting games still playing like they're arcade games?  Now I'm not the best gamer out there, but i'm by no means the worse.  I'll generally play on medium or hard for most games, experiencing occasional difficulty but generally being able to get by, but for some reason Mortal Combat continues to kick my ass.  The stuff this game pulls is just plain frustrating.  When facing difficult characters like Shao Khan he will just corner you and then continuously spam the same combo, making it near impossible to escape.  In order to beat him i was forced to lower the difficulty level and even then i was still experiencing similar issues.  It got to the point that i was forced to spam cheap ranged attacks in order to defeat him.  I understand that a final boss should be difficult, but this was just ridiculous.  I couldn't help but feel that this insane level of difficulty was left over from an age long since passed, and in all honesty that bothers me to no end.  They already received $60 from me (that's 240 quarters) as a single one time fee, they're not gaining additional quarters by making it difficult.   If there's nothing to gain then why keep the difficulty so damn high?
