GOTY 2017

Probably not gonna be a long list of actual 2017 releases this year for me. *adds more than 10 games* Oh wow, okay, nvm.

I'm a dad now - woot! - so let's see how much I'll get done here.

And no, I didn't see that one coming - my game of the year is a... cRPG? on... an Xbox?

List items

  • I love the writing in this game. There is *a lot* of writing in this game. And boy, is it verbose.

It's like they made this for me.

Who would have thought a slow, turn-based cRPG experience with tons of text would work great playing on a couch? Well me, sort of.

  • Mythical feudal Japan, loot-heavy Souls-like, nothing short of brilliant.

  • 2017's 2014 Game of the Year.

It's just a great video game. A story-heavy game with an emphasis on actual, snappy comedy and sharp writing in the Borderlands universe should not work, yet somehow it does. Amazingly well.

My favorite Telltale game since TWD S1. Heck, probably my favorite Telltale game, period.

  • My first Persona game. Not too big on my chances of actually finishing it, but I'm still kinda excited. My very own ER.

Going by the P4 ER, P5 seems to share a lot of the previous game's qualities, for better and for worse.

  • (XBONE)

    What a great opening. Damn.

  • My first Yakuza game. Japan bringing it in 2017, hot damn.

  • Great quality of life improvements. Meaningful clan implementation.

It's unfortunately missing a lot of what made the first game great - strike variety, daily heroic story missions, strike specific loot. More meaningful endgame in general. They're slowly rectifying some of what was lost, but it shouldn't have been lost in the first place.

The MTA have become pretty fucking icky as well, especially with those ghost shells. It's more of a bummer the longer I think about it.

  • Rise of the Necromancer is fantastic. That is all.

  • War is a great MP mode, one of my favorite CoD modes ever I'd say.

  • I honestly bought this because it came in a PSX style box sleeve. It really looks like it was made in 1997.

  • Oh boy, this is not how I remembered Micro Machines from the V3 days on PSX. Yikes.

This... is more like Overwatch, of all things.

  • What a mess.

So much of what this game attempts to do - especially when it tries to evoke the original ME - makes me desperately want to love it, but then it throws in just enough frustrations to make any sort of unqualified love impossible. It's just good enough, great even, to make the whole thing a huge bummer.

Not because of pre-release expectations, but because of a distinct feeling of untapped potential. With a less troubled dev cycle, this could have been something else.
