This game was on my to-play list since it was released, but didn't get around it until I got it in the Humble Monthly bundle in March. I immediately had to play.
But why was this little game on my radar? It's because the story is based on a music video for Steven Wilson's song titled "Drive Now", and Wilson also provided the music to the game with instrumental renditions of songs from his back-catalog. These two elements were enough to pique my interest in the game.
The game doesn't follow the story of the Drive Now music video, but uses similar characters and themes, being a tale about love and loss, where you try to undo a tragic event. And what a tale it is.
Last Day of June belongs to the category of interactive stories like Gone Home, but it also includes light puzzle-solving that keep you from just running through the game. There are also a small set of collectibles that give you some backstory on the characters.
Everything in the game serves a purpose of delivering the themes and affected a great deal on how I felt at the end of the game. To say that the story is heartbreaking is an understatement, and the storybook-like visuals and Wilson's harrowing music create undeniably haunting scenes.
Last Day of June is an incredible gem that I would definitely want people to experience. It's a short and sweet little game, but within the length of approximately 3 hours I got intimately familiar with the stories of the six characters featured in the game and I was deeply touched by the whole experience.
