You state like its a negative thing. When anthem was described as a destiny like, i was IN. Then i played the alpha and honestly the world needs to give Bungie some competition.

I want Ubisoft (Division2) and Bioware(anthem) to raise the bar so that when we get Destiny 3, or Post Acti 'Destiny Forever: The Travelers Saga' or whatever, that we can get better games.

ThePanzini said it above, its not the same game, but its structured the same. I wouldn't in a million years call Guild Wars 2 a 'WoW knockoff' but when someone asks me what that game is i say 'do you know what WoW is?' and go from there.

I think unless the money gets bad, they have to ride this line to keep from falling over to the twitch influencer side.

I'm 100 percent not on board with what Jason said during the bombcast about people understanding what an influencer is. I know a ton of em. They have no clue. I told them about that twitch bounty and one of them flat out thinks its a lie and that his favorite streamer would NEVER take money just to promote a game. This person is an early twenties software engineer. I struggle to think of what highschool is like right now. I imagine its kids buying things that ninja plays becuase ninja played it. I keep my premium on, and whatever money i was at one point using for twitch subs (i happen to like watching people like Gothalion play destiny, cuz i dont have the time to keep up with destiny anymore) i use for GB merch.

Premium + Merch. If it keeps us supporting them, i think thats the line we have to stay on. IF gb put a 'support us with this referral link' under a quick look, id' still use it in a heartbeat. I just dont know what the line between influencer and what GB is. They're not actually journalists anymore, and i don't mean that in a negative way. They're reviewers/ personalities. Maybe im just old and they should embrace the twitch life.

As someone who has maybe a hundred hours into Elite, everytime someone plays the 'but elite came out' card, i want to reply but THERES NOTHING TO DO in it.

I paid 45 bucks for my SC package. I bought a 35 dollar starter pack for my best friend since i assume the price will go up when they release in 2 years.

My hot take?

1. The money thing is dumb, but with the amount of people who wanted to give it they'd be insane to not take it. Those that wanted it back got it back.

2. Half the reason there was drama in the first place is because Derek Smart has what assume is the magical combo of an audience and some personal issues and it was his thing to harp on. Roberts has a fucking restraining order against his kids cuz of how bad things got with that psycho.

3. Big games built from scratch take a long time to build. They're doing a lot of new shit that people normally skimp out on, like trying to convert what was cryengine to actual 64 bit precision was something a bunch of people told roberts 'this is dumb we can fake it and fix problems later'. He doesn't want to fake it, or much of anything, and honestly im just enjoying the ride.

4. I expect this game to be maybe playable in 2020. But its getting there. Every 6 months i poke in, and its 2x the game it was before. It just happens to need actual gameplay loops real bad.

It does make me sad when jeff yells about how gross the game is. Theres a couple of weird things but i dont see how its THAT gross. If we go by years of development, its still not been in 'active development' longer than some big MMOs. Elderscrolls mmo and FFXIV (if we count the reboot to 2.0) took longer. He asked for money to make it in 2013?, but they didn't have employees or a company actually producing content till about 1.5 years later.

I've got plenty of stuff to play. My 45 bucks will mature at some point. I'll judge it then.

edit: speaking of gameplay loops, from the front page of r/starcitizen:

@sonatar:Thank you for reminding me to buy that on GOG. I only had the shareware as a kid. Time to actually finish it.

I don't know if its 'forgotten' but i know a lot of people won't hear it because its part of a subscription MMO, but the FFXIV OST continues to have serious bangers every patch and expansion. The composer even has a Guinness record for most number of tracks (at 400ish now?) https://www.inverse.com/article/37691-final-fantasy-xiv-music-music-a-realm-reborn-masayoshi-soken-guinness-world-records

The best part is that it started out as your generic high fantasy FF bullshit (it was still GOOD but you know), then they very obviously got bored and started goin places with it; off the top of my head, theres a Danny Elfman ripoff/homage, lots of bitchin pipe organ in the Hevansward expansion, and a boss theme so industrial Powerman 5000 actually tried suing Square Enix. The music in this game is very much a part of why i recently started putting it as my favorite game of all time.

Early fantasy stuff that i liked:

They started branching out near the end of A Realm Reborn, in high fashion. The final 'primal' fight of the original game starts with high fantasy, then when shiva does the trademark snap limit break it turns into japanese girl pop punk outta freaking nowhere:

Loading Video...

The next expansion introduced even more crazy mechanics, like a final raid boss who is very obviously a Voltron reference, and has its own Satuday Morning Cartoon ass theme:

I could go on and on. So many bangers.

Heres one more that i just love.

My suggestion?

TRY IT ALL.

I respect people who have their own choices, but i don't respect people who say other's choices are wrong. I like some cream in mine. Little splenda. Straight black is to bitter to me.

Try different ways to make it. French Press gives you oil, which really makes the same bean different from a drip or aeropress or something. If youve got an Ikea near you they sell big and little presses for DIRT cheap (unlike the bodums you get at a target/department store that are 50 bucks for the 2 cents of chrome they stick on it).

Try fruity blends. Try chocolate tinged. Try dark, try light. Try cold brew. Try iced. Half the fun of coffee is just figuring out what you like!

@geirr: Yep. This is one of the things that kills me about it. None of the people were very attractive (and it may have a thing they were going for, normal ass people.) but every game i make i try to make Alicia Keys with a gun/sword and not having that was a downer. I instantly cared less about the cosmetic aspect of the game later on.

It also has killed my destiny play. I hop on when theres a patch, play the content, see that i STILL look like a leveling hobo, and wonder why im even attemping to get loot.

Its also why i have a billion hours in the ff mmo. Glamour is the real endgame, and it keeps me hungry.

I'm a destiny / FFXIV player.

On one hand im afraid of another deep loot game to get in on. On the other, i loved the division and wished there was more to the endgame. In a world where UBI post release support is a thing they're known for, this one could be a good un'.

And if its not, it'll probably get better with time anyway.

What i am worried about is Anthem. I feel BioWare is going to make the same exact mistakes Bungie made with destiny (and i played through all of its ups and downs). That said, having put my hands on it, its the iron man game disney cant make. It feels SO GOOD, but i have a feeling it'll be empty and boring till they get their Taken King.

So i DONT preorder games, but i'll most likely pass on Anthem and wait for Div2.

As someone with a headset and wheel, I can kind of see why they think they have a problem to solve. I know some folks with money to burn who just 'want a sim rig i just want to drive the car with the headset'.

Any idiot can make some deals with chinese parts manufacturers and get a custom pc built (see walmart's disaster). The software will be the interesting part. If its a 'console' that implies it wont just have windows on it, which means custom linux?

Which means steambox. And even valve couldn't make that happen.

My verdict: Silly. Probably Vaporware. And they should just put the freaking effort into PCars3. 2 is ok but could be so much better.

edit: also its sinfully ugly. christ its the neon green and danger orange crap we got away from in 2007. and LOL at the watercooling loop in their render. Dream on.

Regardless how much we love games or any game in particular, in game item monetization, free-to-play and games-as-a-service are simply unacceptable, because of their potential and explicit purpose to be abused, to ruin people's lives and to steal people's time/money.

Like all terrible political ideologies before it, commercialism is hard at work to destroy the core family, to drive a wedge between generations and genders, to isolate people, or at least isolate them in a group of like minded and to promote the moronic belief of Individualism. #Fansites #Subreddits #Fake news #"Me, personally"

The wisdom that applied to MMOs twenty years ago still holds and is just as true for free-to-play: "The only winning move is not to play."

The simplest proof is this: Companies that have some degree of ethics, because they have to when marketing to children and parents, simply don't allow free-to-play, with the exception of demos (free-to-start). But even that is a concession.

This is pretty extreme dude. Understanding value and whats valuable to you is a core part of maturing into an adult. Like all life skills some people are better at it than others. It's not even just a strict 'commercialism ruins everything' sort of thing. I had a toxic relationship with my parents and decided there was little to no value in that relationship, and theres nothing to do with purchases or currency in it.

Also I would like to point out that you're making assumptions on how everyone else responds to these horrid practices. I would say the majority of the games I play are service games or F2P games. I've put money into heroes of the storm, league of legends, ive bought destiny 1 and 2 and its DLC, and the big one here: I have literally never been un-subbed to Final Fantasy XIV. Never. 5 straight years (since the 2.0 release) i've maintained a sub to that game and played.

I'm trying to find this ruination and horror in my life. I put more 80 hour weeks into work in 2018 than I ever have, that obviously did more harm than my XIV sub.

In the end, whats your point? You want to make it illegal? You want nothing but God of War style games to be made?

Core problem is that some folks think every piece of content should be applicable to them. There are billions of hours of content on the internet, you're not a bad Duder if you turn something off and watch something else. Me personally? I catch a huge nerdboner when jeff digs into the old stuff, but can't stand when Vinny tries to break a game. In the time i could write an angry response in the comments, i've already gone to twitch to watch someone stream something else. Why complain when i know it makes 1000 other people insanely happy to watch vinny go full vinny?
