Aw but BrownHair McWhitedude was such an interesting character with a totally inspired backstory that really made you want to care about killing thousands of orc-things in the name of.. something.

It's a good thing we're talking about video games and not movies.

My opinion is the same as GB's reason for doing these GOTY lists in the first place. They do mad traffic because people on the internet like lists and if you are going to do a GOTY I would rather have a podcast showing us the arguments than reading a one paragraph blurb that only highlights some of the reasons why.

For you though, what else are GOTY lists supposed to be and if you think making decisions based on the opinions of the editorial team is unfair then how else would you do it?

I get the popularity of lists and all that, but I genuinely think they're inherently bad. To me, 99% of lists are internet drama generators. I don't agree with the central premise of ordering games into a top 10 list because that is mad arbitrary and more often than not, time is spent talking about how a game doesn't deserve to be on position 2 vs position 3 rather than actually recommending a good game that someone enjoyed.

I'd much rather each crew member post their own individual games of the year. Each person's list would not be ordered, would not need to stick to the 10 game limit (can be over or under), and would simply be a collection of titles that each person happened to enjoy that year. I know that some friends of the site already do this. Which is why I genuinely see no purpose behind the site as a whole having to pick out 10 and then waste time sorting it.

It's so contrived that every single time they bicker / fight about something trivial, I'm immediately reminded that the whole thing is pointless and serves no purpose. We're supposed to be celebrating what folks thought was excellent but instead spend time discussing absolutely boring details simply so we can say how much incrementally worse another title is.

P.S. Just remembered - I'm not even saying anything new here. The crew themselves have shared these same views, especially on the east coast. They've said it many times before that they do lists because they're popular.

This post reminds me why I love GOTY time so much. Not so much for Giant Bomb's choices, but for how people react in sometimes spectacular ways to choices they don't agree with.

Really? Cause stuff like this is actually why I skip almost all types of GOTY content (besides the skits). They're always walking the line between "lol it's just an opinion" and in the very next breath - "you're wrong if you think game X is better than game Y". And let's not even talk about the absurdity of comparing two entirely different titles, oftentimes games that aren't even from the same genre.

It just feels downright stupid at times. The dumb arguments that spawn from it are even more asinine and annoying to listen to. The kind of anger and vitriol that spawn from it are things you reserve for real world problems, not video games.

And no, I'm not saying you can't like a game. Disliking something is fine. The process of knocking down a good title with a passion and toxicity you find on most forums makes for bad discussion (and it's mostly just to bump another game up the list). It's even weirder witnessing a team of professionals do the same.

Congratulations to both Dan and Bianca! Hope you guys had a fantastic day.

...I still can't believe the Taco Bell thing, though.

Man, the PSP constantly had this problem. The games it had, while sometimes good, made you constantly think you were playing an inferior port of a console title. The PSP versions did very little to differentiate themselves from the series they came from.

For me, the PSP was always my Monster Hunter machine - until those games came out on the 3DS, of course.

A bit of a side note - based on what I see about Monster Hunter World, Destiny 2, and many other titles, it doesn't seem like I need a gaming system besides my PC.

Absolutely. The GBE playdate was fantastic, and that short video they made about E3 fashion tips was fucking amazing.

*dabs in approval*

It's kinda baffling to me that people are already judging it without playing it. It'd be understandable if it were a story-driven game, but an action game? Those games live and die by how well they feel to play.

That being said, I don't know if Bioware has the pedigree to deliver on the mechanics / handling front. We'll have to wait and see.

@shiftymcfargus:

The Burnout games usually have pretty good handling (Burnout 3 is my favorite in that aspect)

NFS has had good handling in the past (Underground 2 was the best)

And if we're talking about something between arcade and sim - both GRID and Forza Horizon 3 have amazing handling.

None of the NFS games after Carbon have had good handling. And even Carbon was kinda meh.

No.

What matters above anything else in a racing game are the controls / handling. And NFS games have not done well in that regard for a very, very long time. I don't have high hopes for this thing. I don't care how wacky or FnF-like it is if it doesn't handle well.

After all, if the best portions of the game are non-interactive, why should I play it? I can just watch the best portions on YouTube.
