Games I seriously need to beat

There are a lot of games I really want to complete before I kick the bucket (I'm 19, so if all goes according to plan I have lotsa time!), so I decided to make myself a list here in order to keep track of them. I'm sure there's tons I'm missing.

Inspired by this thread I guess!: http://www.giantbomb.com/forums/general-discussion-30/returning-to-a-game-to-finally-conquer-it-1482608/#3

List items

  • I rented this game a loooong time ago and got to disc 2 before I had to return it. I have since bought it, but haven't went back to it. This is admittedly the one game that has constantly been bugging me since I stopped playing it.

  • I have tried to beat this game so many times, but....Man, I just don't like it at all. I HAVE to beat this eventually though. Don't ask me why, I just have to.

  • Currently in the process of playing, so hopefully this will be removed soon!

  • I've always been curious about IV even though it kinda looks like the most generic of all the story heavy FF's. But hey, don't judge a book by its cover I guess. I plan on buying this and playing through it very soon!

  • Technically you can't beat it, but I really wanna hit max level someday.

  • 4 years later, and 70 hours in. I have to beat this someday.

  • Got the Law ending, but wanna get neutral eventually. Just haven't been in the mood to play through it again. Also getting neutral sounds way harder than it should be.

  • Been playing this on and off since it came out. Currently in the secret world.

  • This was a game I played when I was bored in the hotel when me and my family were on a vacation a couple years ago. Aside from the very annoying controls, I really enjoyed it. Not sure why I stopped playing it.

  • I think this game looks awesome and I really wanna beat it someday.

  • I really wanna play these, but they seem very hard to find. I will also fully admit that I only wanna play them because I loved Xenoblade. (Yes, I know these games probably aren't anything like Xenoblade).

  • The only other " old-school " FF game that I'm interested in. I've gotten about half way through it before and stopped for some reason. I'll probably pick it up again soon.

  • I've always been drawn to this game for some reason. I plan on buying it soon, but it's a little expensive online. (You can forget about finding any old-ish games in stores where I live).

  • I own it on Steam apparently. Why not?

  • Eventually.......eventually.

  • I feel like I'm at the end of the game, or at least close to it. Stopped playing for unknown reasons.

  • I still FF VII and Crisis Core tell some the greatest stories ever and they helped me through a lot of hard times, so I feel obligated to complete this bad game eventually.

  • And Kazooie! These were the first games I ever played, and I can't really remember if I beat them. So I'll just beat 'em now!

  • Innocent Sin is a great story wrapped around a mediocre game. I need to complete that story soon.

  • I remember trying to rent this when I was was little because I loved OoT so much. I ended up never really being able to because I needed some sorta accessory.

  • I LOVED III, but man. This game is just kinda boring. I still feel the need to beat it though.

  • Episode 1 and 2, not the base game. It's weird, I love playing these games, but I never actually want to?

  • I don't really like this game as much as the originals, but I still wanna beat it someday.

  • Stopped playing for some reason. Need to beat it soon.

  • Totally forgot about this one. Really wanna play this too.

So many good choices on here, but Lost Odyssey and its Thousand Years of Dreams sidestories are well worth finishing.

Ah ye ole Pile of Shame. We all have these,it only gets worse as you get older unfortunately. You don't want to know how many games are on mine. :(

You're pretty close on both those Dragon Quest Games! Especially Viii, you've got to be only 10+ hours to end game or so unless you going for all the extra stuff (My play through ending up being 116 but I got everything)

I find for JRPGs without spoken dialogue, they make great games to play while also listening to the Bombcast. Really helps with any grinding sessions if need be. :)

FFIV I suppose might be generic now, it was revolutionary back in the day, perhaps even more than Vi. V was ugh. Well I liked how progressive V was with their female protagonists, but that story was weird.

Gotta admit that first Xenosaga, it's a pretty rough play. So many cutscenes, so so so many! So Slow, unbelievably slow. I've heard 2 is better, but I just couldn't bring myself to play it after that.

I'd save those for last.

FFV's story isn't really weird. It's just bland. Faris aside, the characters are largely forgettable and the story is just sort of there. (And features a really lame antagonist.) It's like the writers went on vacation between working on FFIV and FFVI.

And I don't know who told you Xenosaga II is better, because it really isn't. The combat system is ultimately worse and the story was stripped of elements that the creators intended mainly because Namco wanted a streamlined, more action-y game to try to broaden the audience. All it did was annoy fans of the original. And the pacing is terrible. The game covers two discs, yet takes less than forty-hours to get to the end game dungeon, at which point a side-quest is thrown in to extend play time.

Seriously, the first game is better.

@steadyingmeat: Dirge of Cerberus is by no means a great game, but I played it back in the day when it was new, and aside from some strange quirks, it's actually a decent attempt at a Final Fantasy-themed third-person shooter. It could certainly have been better, but I had fun with it.

God, I loved those things sooo damn much. I remember LO being great in the story department in general. The only crappy thing I can remember about LO is how they handled leveling and grinding. It was just super unsatisfying. I do remember there being a cool skill system though.

Heh, I actually really don't mind sitting through hours of cutscenes. In fact, I really enjoy it. Probably why I enjoyed MGS IV so much. :P .....I don't really like watching movies though, oddly enough.

*whispers: I actually kinda had fun with it too, but don't tell anyone. *

I really don't appreciate how they set up a possible VII-2 with the secret ending if they knew they probably weren't ever gonna make one though. >;/

I guess Genesis was always kind of a " me too! " antagonist though, so maybe it's for the better if they just don't do any more with him.

@steadyingmeat: Yeah, there are some real issues with the game as a whole, but the side stories are basically worth the price of admission. One of the few games I can think of which really utilizes a loss of memory well.

I like cutscenes too, but man there are parts of that game where they happen so frequently that they feel like random encounters.

That's the issue I had with that game, it's pacing can be maddening. At least that's my memory of it.

Bland may be a better way to put it, I just couldn't follow the plot very well. It seemed totally nonsensical. And that's what seemed weird to me. I'm 100% with you, Exdeath is super lame. It's the only game in the series I didn't like.

It could have been the translation I played though (PS1). I have not played that game in over ten years.

Man you make XS II sound super depressing. The pacing was primarily my issue with the first, to hear that it is even worse in the sequel makes me very glad I never played it. That's a damn shame they changed the combat, since that was easily my favorite part of the first.

Final Fantasy IV's story might use a lot of JRPG cliches, but there's something compelling about just how fast it runs through them all. By the time you've caught on to what it's doing, it's moving on to the next one. And there are some genuine surprises to be found in there, too, and it fits them all into about 20 hours worth of play. I only played through it earlier this year and I think its story is probably its strongest point.
