Game of the Year 2015

With a casual glance at the games that just missed my list, it has been a great year for games. This doesn't even account for games that I didn't get to but have sitting on my pile of shame notably including MGSV. Also, I have a feeling that one day next year, I may regret not including Xenoblade Chronicles X, but we'll see where that game takes me over the next few months after getting it as a Christmas gift. Also, I didn't get Mario Maker, I wont either, I'm convinced it would ruin me. Honourable Mention goes to The Beginners Guide and Splatoon, they only just missed out.

List items

  • Dark Souls 2 was my GOTY last year and these From games have become titles I have some pretty genuine love for. I still had a good solid think about putting this game at number one but at the end of the day, I can't think of another game that hooked me this hard all year. I pushed through this game and it rewarded me in every way. It has everything I love about a Souls game and while the world wasn't as great as that from Dark Souls, that is a pretty high bar.

  • It just kept creeping up my list till it found a resting spot at number two. It was originally a bit higher but when I think about the way this game gripped me during a pretty difficult period, there are some good memories there. I played through it twice, it really is something special.

  • I haven't played any of the other games in the series so this slotting in at number 3 was a bit of a surprise, it just worked on all levels for me though. The story was a big fun fantasy romp with engaging characters and the world was just stunning to explore. I can't wait to finally dig into some DLC.

  • Another one that kept creeping up my list, in fact, it just jumped a spot as I wrote this. A larger part of that is my memories of this game. I like the Telltale formula enough, but this was the first time it felt like they said, "Screw it, let's have some fun." The licence also seemed to allow for that and rather than rely on tropes of the series like using Claptrap, they invent great new characters that I would more than love to spend more time with. As a side note, I did play the first chapter in December last year while I was suffering from gastro, so the fond memories I have of this game cover one of the worst sickness experiences of my life.

  • This game feels like it should be much higher on my list given how hotly I anticipated each episode. Just the way things fall unfortunately. I do love it though despite some writing hitches and the occasional "huh" moment. Still, I really loved this world and these characters and was a little bit sad that it had to end.

  • It's just a solid one of these games. I liked the reboot a lot so I was heading into this one wanting more. That's what they gave me, but it's even more than that. The challenge tombs aren't the only puzzle elements this time, there is a really great mix in this game of adventure and combat. Neither feels like too much at any point and that is a fine line to walk.

  • Very late addition to the list, but given how much I've sunk into this game in the last week of the year, it definitely needs representation. It's clunky but there is just a great deal of satisfaction involved in some of this big hunts that has me continuing to come back for more. It's giving me that Dark Souls feeling (having said that, without the intricate world building) from a pure gameplay perspective and that could be a dangerous thing as the series goes forward.

  • After hearing so much about it, I decided to sit down for a couple of hours to give it a try towards the end of the year. What resulted was me frantically writing down a number of notes, attempting to work out who was who and really being ensnared by the game in every way. I might never go back to it, but the 3 or so hours I did spend with it will linger.

  • I'm so angry at this game. For a solid 30 hours, I was loving the time I spent in this world despite the occasional annoyance. I absorbed it all, then I just decided to push the story further only to get to "the twist." It was one of the stupidest twists I've ever experienced in a story and it then clumsily opens up the end game. I became so uninterested in the game at that point It's like I just pressed an "initiate end game," button and everything from there was flat and boring. I just really need to remember those first thirty hours I spent with it, if it had remained that great, it'd be pushing for the number one spot.

  • So yeah, I don't remember the last time a game hooked me as hard as this one did. I sat down for an entire day playing this and I JUST COULDN'T STOP PLAYING! I had to see my line through (I was a backer) to the very end and while I got overly concerned about the level of incest going on, I got there. Then I had trouble sleeping because I spent too damn much time playing the game...and I was shaking.
