Deep Interview: Get to Know the Endurance Runners: MeatsOfEvil and Blzzzrrttt

No Caption Provided

Deep Listens is a gaming podcast series I'm recording with a few of my friends. Every two weeks we pick and play a new game and then discuss it from a literary, philosophical, and game design perspective. Its kind of like a book club for videogames. We try to dig as deep as we can on an individual game every episode so check it out!

In this episode we are joined by Luis "@meatsofevil" Martinez and @blzzzrrttt to discuss how they got involved with the Giantbomb Community Endurance Run, what they've enjoyed from past events, and what they're doing this year. We discover the origin of the name Blzzzrrttt, how someone decides to play Siren for hours on end, and what Mahjong Pretty Girls Battle: School Girls Edition is. At some point we also take a not-so-short break to discuss Japanese visual novels.

The Giant Bomb Community Endurance Run will be running from April 15th to 17th and it will be raising money for Pencils of Promise. Be sure to tune in!

In this episode we talk to Chris "@zombiepie" -REDACTED- about his role in this year's Giantbmb Community Endurance Run. We discuss how last year's event lead him down the dark path towards playing a Final Fantasy game. We also discuss what he's going to stream for this year's event. He needs your help to pick between two great options: play every PC Final Fantasy game in order to rank them all, or play one PC FF game as much as he can in one weekend. Vote with your donations and tell him what to do!

We try to dig as deep as we can on an individual game every episode so check it out!

After a week of horrible technical difficulties, the show is back on track with a long, spoiler-free discussion of Mass Effect. In part 1 we're joined by Devin DeFrancesco to discuss the mechanics of Mass Effect. We cover the different guns, powers, and team configurations that prop up Mass Effect's combat. Billy rants about the game's inventory system. We analyze the potential ramifications of the game's binary morality system. And we also find some time to ponder what the heck Omni-gel is and why it seems to solve all of our problems.

In this episode we are still joined by Devin DeFrancesco to discuss the story of Mass Effect. We kick things off by responding to some user feedback about Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and whether FFCC's gamplay clashes with it's aesthetics. We then pivot over to Mass Effect talk and discuss the multiple races of the ME univers and how they all fit together. Pete gets on his AI-loving soapbox about the Geth and humanity's role in the larger story of Mass Effect. We also take a close look at how the non-linear elements of Mass Effect's story can radically alter how you interpret the game.

We'll be playing Devil Daggers for our next episode, so stay tuned!

Every two weeks we pick and play a new game and then discuss it from a literary, philosophical, and game design perspective. Its kind of like a book club for videogames. We try to dig as deep as we can on an individual game every episode so check it out!

In this part 1 we discuss the gameplay of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. We cover everything from the character classes, to the crafting system, to the game's digital families. We also debate whether magic fusion is in fact the most fun thing to do in multiplayer games and whether owning 4 GBAs and 4 GBA link cables is too much. Who knew that Crystal Chronicles would hold up so well?

In this part 2 we discuss the story of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and a few potential interpretations of it's storyline. Pete compares the game to a Futurama episode on global warming and Gino tries to articulate what separates FF CC from other JRPGs. We also talk about our favorite levels in the game and how the game manages to craft a world using a few short narrated segments and level design. We finish up by lamenting the game's final act and Square's decision to allow the game to go "full Kingdom Hearts" at the last moment.

In this part 1 we are once again joined by game design student Tyler Morgan as we try our best to discuss The Witness without spoiling anything. As a result, we only discuss the game's sound design, visual aesthetic, and tutorial area. We also talk about whether the game was worth it's $40 price point and whether we would recommend it to others. In short, The Witness is really hard to talk about without spoiling anything.

In part 2 we are still joined by game design student Tyler Morgan as we take off the spoiler shackles and talk freely about The Witness. We discuss as many of the puzzle mechanics, levels, and hidden secrets. We also talk about how The Witness's long development time allowed it's development team to create one of the most narratively and mechanically consistent games ever made. We finish up the podcast by talking about what lingering questions we still have about the world of The Witness.

In part 1 we are joined once again by friend of the show Chris "@zombiepie" -REDACTED- to discuss Pokemon Snap. We discuss our relationships with the Pokemon franchise and how those relationships effect our appreciation for Pokemon Snap. We also discuss the logistics of Professor Oak's photo catalog and the game's unique structure. Listen as ZP and Billy square off to see who is the biggest pokemaniac (spoilers: it's the one who printed out Pokemon pictures at Blockbuster Video).

In part 2 we continue to be joined by friend of the show Chris "@zombiepie" -REDACTED- to discuss Pokemon Snap. In this episode we try to take apart what it is exactly that makes Pokemon Snap so enjoyable and why it's formula has proven to be so unrepeatable. We dive deep on what how much our love for Pokemon Snap is colored by our loyalty to the Pokemon franchise vs. our nostalgia for the late 90s. We close up by breaking down all of the game's levels and analyzing what makes the last level so underwhelming.
