And here I am, thinking that being a Whiskey Media yearly supporter removed all the ads from the site. So much for that!

I would imagine so over time.  The brand has such a huge appeal that everyone who is familiar with the series and then learns that GT5 is a GT3-esque leap from previous attempts.  Considering the sheer volume of content for the price, it's as close to an essential purchase as you can get for the PS3.

Remember, the last mainline Gran Turismo game sold 11 million units.  Prologue sold well over 5 worldwide.  Just because the hype isn't there in full force on day one as it is with many AAA games these days doesn't mean it won't be a big counterpoint in favor of PS3 when someone is looking for a new console from Black Friday to the years until the next round of consoles.

An even better example than the OP's is Battlefield 2 on PC.  It had persistent character leveling per class, weapon unlocks, and detailed stat tracking that dwarfs what  every console game except Halo 3 has.

All on dedicated servers.  In 2004.

Uninformed commentary like the stuff displayed on this subject in this week's Bombcast is why so many people scoff at the term "games journalism."
