An Open Thank You Letter To Garnett Lee/We are...ghost.

When I first heard the news that Garnett Lee would be leaving 1Up for Game Fly Media, it wasn't hard to remember many entertaining moments with him on the 1Up Yours podcast. Even after the New Year's shakedown at 1Up.com, when the show lost Shane Bettenhausen and changed its name to Listen Up, in my head it was always Yours. Garnett, it was your goddamn show, and I loved it. I'm sad to see you go, but maybe with youngbloods like David Ellis at the helm I'll finally be able to accept the transition.

I want to congratulate Garnett on his new position, and thank him for all that he brought to 1Up's table. I felt that our gaming tastes matched well most of the time, and sometimes I thought you were flat-out wrong, but I always appreciated your attitude towards the industry on the whole. You're always looking out for what matters most in the games business: gamers. You consistently hold gamers' best interests at heart. That's important in an artistic entertainment industry that can too caught up turf wars and the bottom line, and forget what makes people fall in love with games. You clearly love games, and I hope you keep shouting that to the world. Good luck out there, Sir...

What I'm Playing:

  • Main Campaign: The Beatles: Rock Band
  • Side Quest : Castle Age, Mr. AahH!

Whether you liked him or not, you have to recognize that an era has now completely passed behind us. I don't know if 1up was the first website to have a podcast, but they're certainly how I first got the habit of listening to dudes talk about games, thanks to them I learned quite a bit about the games industry.

I don't really even know who Garnett Lee is, but I'm positive he's not big enough to have his own era. There's a 0% chance anyone will consider the last several years the Garnett Lee Era.

so you openly admit you have no clue who he is, but still feel the need to troll.

Stop being a cockend and crawl back under the bridge where you belong.

This is a huge loss for 1UP and for the gaming podcast community as a whole, I have no doubt he'll do something podcast related in his new role, but now I truly feel the torch has been passed to the Giantbomb crew. The 1UP flagship podcast has been on a steady (very slow at first when Luke left, then divebombed when Shane left, then the dissolution of GFW RADIO) decline for a while now, it just that there wasn't the same chemistry as Luke, Shane, John and Garnett.

It's a shame to see him go, but since the UGO buyout and subsequent layoff's (getting rid of the 1UP show was idiocy to say the least) things haven't been the same. The giantbomb crew have now since taken it to the next level and I for one am glad that someone has.

Since UGO bought 1up, in my eyes 1up was dead then. I stopped ever going there the day after that happened. Also, Garnett was never anything special in my eyes at all...I liked from time to time that was always someone to tell it like it is, no matter who disagreed with him about whatever the topic, but even before that 1up was long dead with the brodeo was all but finished.

I've been listening to 1UP Yours and ListenUp for years now.  Hell, on occasion, I even listened to podcasts where Garnett was a guest.  I really enjoyed his enthusiasm, off-center sense of humor and his willingness to play "devil's advocate" by challenging panel members to defend their opinions.  Sadly, with him leaving 1UP, their podcast will slip from my "must listen to" list to my "if I have spare time" list.  Maybe someone on the new crew will distinguish themselves and make the show a priority again.  After all, I was sad when Luke left but life went on.

I know that just as I followed Jeff and the crew here to Giant Bomb because of my love for the old Hot Spot podcast, I'll follow Garnett to Shacknews and subscribe to whatever new podcast he develops in the coming months.

I definitely feel like Garnett's departure, along with the news today that John Davidson has sold What They Play to IGN and is going over to GamePro, is the final nail in the coffin for the old EGM/1UP era. Maybe people like BiffMcBlumpkin don't see any significance, but for me, and a lot of other people, this is something huge.

Like many other gamers, the 1UP podcasts were pretty much the first place that I started listening to guys talking about games. Personally, I don't really have any friends that are into gaming to the same degree that I am, so those podcasts have always served as a stand in for the conversations that I couldn't have.

I wish the best of luck to both John and Garnett in their new ventures, and I can only hope that we'll be able to continue hearing their opinions and enjoying their discussions on gaming for a long time to come.

Yeah seriously. I don't know why everyone dick rides Garnett; he was like the Brad of those podcasts, except he hosted many of them.

I tried listening to this guy once, and couldn't make it through 10 minutes. His jokes were so fucking bad and he monotone.

I like you. It's a shame to see Garnett go, I guess I'll have to settle with Drunken Gamers Radio for all my functional alcoholic nonsense and limited technical knowledge now. He was a great host.

@Chaser324:

Wow, that was new news to me concerning John Davison and Billy Berghammer.  I figured that John would be moving on once he made his money off What-They-Play, but I am surprised to see him back in a paper publication.  The market has not improved for print journalism in my opinion since the demise of EGM, so seeing what plans he has to reinvigorate the GamePro name intrigues me.  As for Billy at G4, well, that one is really mysterious.  I think he has done a lot to rebuild their website and legitimize its content.  I visit the new G4TV often since the big remodel.  Since no one is talking, I wonder if the suits had him canned for not meeting their expectations.  Could this mean a slide back into mediocrity again for them?  Possibly.  Maybe the truth to his parting with G4 will come out eventually.  Incidentally,  Garnett and Billy are now both in LA and have gotten along well in the past, so maybe there is a future for them together.  However, it seems as if it would be a step back professionally for Billy.

@PenguinDust: Yeah, the John Davidson move was totally news to me too. Apparently he was going to make the official announcement today, but the news leaked out early so they put out this statement late yesterday.

This is sad to hear - 1up Yours will be weird without Garnett and John.

But hey if they're moving to better things, good on them.

@Bruce: I don't necessarily agree with your sentiment, but your St Vincent picture makes up for that and then some. Keep it real.

With Garnett leaving Listen UP and Hilary Goldstein leaving Three Red Lights, two of my favorite podcasts just became a lot less awesome.

jesus, Davidson has sold 'what they play'? WOW, I wonder how much he got for it? It seemed that he put a load of work into that sight and it really managed to carve it's own little niche(sp) in the gaming world.

So Garnett Lee is leaving 1up?   What is 1up? Is it anything like 7up?  I like 7up, it has a lemon lime flavor and is quite refreshing.

I'll rephrase what I said, it's the end of the 1UP era as "I" knew it. Many good times were had there.

All I know about Garnette Lee is that he used to work at 1up.  Why does the guy get so much hate?
