A possible 'goodbye', just in case I die on the operating table.

Let me start by saying that I'm 20, and still wearing braces on my teeth. I've had them since I was 18, and over that time, they've managed to straighten my teeth out. However, I've got an overbite from hell. You see, your upper teeth are slightly in front of your lower teeth when your jaw in closed, though in my case, my upper teeth land directly on top of my lower teeth. The result is a massive gap, with my jaw completely closed, I can fit a credit card through the teeth. You can probably imagine how much this sucks. When eating sandwiches, I'm unable to bite through lettuce, cheese, etc. I know, a nightmare, right?

So about a year ago, my orthodontist gave me a choice. I could have 4 teeth pulled, then over the course of several months, I could have my upper jaw pulled forward with a series of inconvenient and uncomfortable rubber bands, which would kind of fix the problem. This was a compromise, and wasn't guaranteed to work. I, personally, pride myself in taking great care of my teeth, I've never had a cavity, my teeth are a healthy pink and my teeth are white. I was already bummed that I had to have my Wisdom teeth pulled (because they came in perfectly, and never hurt) so the idea of having 4 more molars pulled was out of the question to me. Which left me with the other option- surgery.

Let me explain this, they're going to cut open the roof of my mouth, and enter my sinuses. Once there, they're going to cut through my upper jaw, and disconnect it from my skull. Then, they'll move it into a more appropriate position, and fasten it there with a series of plates and screws. Then, they're going to let the bone gap fill in naturally over the course of a few weeks, in which I'm not allowed to eat any solid food at all.

However, this is all completely fine with me, I'm not worried about the procedure at all. It's the anesthesia that worries me. I had my wisdom teeth pulled last year, fully awake. They put the nitrous mask on me, to which I felt no effect at all. Then they attempted to inject me with a conscious sedation. After a minute, they realized that it wasn't having any effect. See, I have terrible veins, they couldn't find one no matter how hard they tried. They injected me with enough drugs to knock me out five times over, to no effect, apparently my body is too stubborn to be knocked out with anything but hard drugs. The end result was the surgeon numbing me up, and letting me stay awake while he put his foot on the table in order to get the leverage he needed to yank my teeth out (which is an extremely weird feeling, by the way.)

TL;DR I'm not actually afraid of dying, but I am nervous about tomorrow. I've got to show up at 5:30 AM tomorrow, and undergo some crazy surgery, where they purposefully break my jaw off. I'm just letting you dudes know what's up, and asking you to wish me luck, and pray to your gods/sciences.

My dad had something similar done, but they removed his bottom jaw, and had to replace something with some bone from his hip. As terrible as it was, it was hilarious to see him limping around with a huge face.

Those few weeks of healing sound like it's going to be a bitch. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled I absolutely hated the fact I couldn't eat any solid foods.

You need surgery if your top teeth land on your bottom teeth? My bottom teeth go a little PAST my top teeth...do I need surgery?

Hey Walrus, hope you come through it okay = ).

Don't worry too much about the anesthesia.  Everyone reacts to it differently depending on their body chemistry.  Like you, I, too, had my wisdom teeth taken out consciously while being under anesthesia.  When I asked around, I found out that other people fall asleep when they used that chemical.

This surgery thing is a lot different though - hope it works out for ya = )

The surgery you're going to have sounds like quite the big deal and I have the exact same fear of anesthesia as you, but you're going to do great. I'm looking forward to reading an update later on about how it went. <3

Yikes, sounds intense. Hopefully everything will go well. Don't worry about it though. Just be calm and confident that the people operating on you know what they're doing and they want to help you, and you'll be OK in the long run.

This made me laugh. Good luck though dude. Anesthesia is pretty fun though, it makes you all loopy and feel like you're not awake but you are. Good times... Anyways, may the force be with you young padawan.

You risk your olfactory nerve for unnecessary cosmetic jaw surgery? Uuuuh...

Anyway, sounds like you just had a bad anesthetist. If they are going to rearrange your skull, I am sure they will consult someone who knows their drugs.

Edit: Wisdom teeth operations under local anesthesia is better anyway, usually involved with a lot less pain and bruising afterwars. It is normal practice where I live - if you want to be put under, it costs you massively.

Yo. I wore braces when I was 20 and only got them removed after two years. My orthodontist gave me the same choice. I chose the rubber bands, because I wasn't going to have surgery for something that was really only a cosmetic consideration. Of course, my overbite was (is?) not nearly as severe.

Good luck, buddy.

I knew a guy back in high school that underwent a not entirely dissimilar procedure.  If I recall correctly, they actually shortened the length of his lower jaw.  I have no idea what the recovery was like for him, but he didn't seem to have much trouble with the recovery while at school.

Anyway, good luck, man.

Good luck buddy - you'll be right. Doctors are uber smart people, and they'd have gone through everything with all their colleagues to ensure the utmost success. I do know the weird hollow, almost-apathetic yet scared feeling before major surgery, I had a brain tumor removed a few years back and the night before waking up early is the worst. Play some games, you'll be right. Catcha soon

I had that surgery about 2 years ago on March 15. They cut open the roof of my mouth and pulled my teeth apart. Then they broke my jaw and straightened it out for a good bite. I didn't really have a good choice with mine. It was either that or sleeping with a sleep apnea machine that sounds like your sleeping next to a turbine from the hoover dam. The worst part about the surgery was sleeping next to a gang member stab victim. They promised  me my own room then when I woke up I was in a shared room. DON'T EVER GO TO FRESNO COMMUNITY HOSPITAL. The nurses were dumb shits that when I hit the nurse button they'd ask me what I wanted. I wish I could have told them MY MOUTH IS WIRED SHUT YOU STUPID CUNTS. For breakfast they gave me coffee and scrambled eggs...

Just follow the doctors orders exactly as you are supposed to when you get home. Take your liquid antibiotics and don't try to talk etc. It's going to take a good year before they'll take off the bands and let you open your mouth. They'll probably keep telling you  "maybe next week" for like 5 months straight.

Good luck
