And it started so well...

I was really enjoying Devil May Cry 4. It was cool, and it was a fun exercise in slicing dudes up without doing too much thinking.
Note the past tense. Was.
I managed to get over half way through the game, to Level 13 out of 20 but already the fun was gone. At the end of Level 11, a character switch ensued. No longer was I the young knight Nero, I was the rugged

Nero...
Nero...
hero Dante and honestly, I'm cool with that. For the most part, the characters are identical and the difference between the two aren't bad, just different. But the level design, oh the fucking level design. It just died.
My first mission as Dante (Level 12) was a timed escape from a castle I'd just traversed as Nero. Fair enough, I can dig a bit of backtracking, but the timer just makes you rush it, when you don't need to. I was desperate to get out in time and when I managed with something like 6 minutes left, I felt cheated for missing so many power-ups (you can collect Red Orbs which you can then trade for power-ups).
It was, quite frankly, a shitty level. But ya'know what? Every game deserves a shitty level. It's only fair, and considering the game is made up of 20 levels, I can't hold it against the game to drop the ball once.
It was Level 13 that really pissed me off.
In Level 13, you've got to traverse through Portals to get to a specific area, but the mechanics of the game mean you can go through the same Portal twice and come out at different places, based on your past history of portal-jumping. Fair enough, works in theory, but the theory obviously missed the point when I got trapped in 3 fucking areas with 3 fucking portals that would only travel to each fucking other.
Okay, so that last 'fucking' seems out of place, but I have a thing for cursing in 3's.
Dante...
Dante...

Point here being, if I can't figure out a puzzle (and I'm honestly not very good at puzzles, I'll admit) I like to take my time, trying out different things. That tactic coupled with the portal mechanic has now just made this level impossible to win unless I start over, and now I'm too pissed off for that.
I don't know if I'll ever come back and retry this, but if not: Good job Capcom. You really surprised me with a decent game until Level 13.
I hope you die in an asbestos related fire.

Hopefully The Force Unleashed will arrive tomorrow...

B[o]ut

...I maintain that Nero and Dante are the same guy in two different coats...
