Well that took me by suprise..

So.. I've been playin' some games lately. More importantly, I've bought some games on Steam..

Bully
Darksiders
Just Cause 2
Mirror's Edge
P.B. Winterbottom
Recettear
Shank
Torchlight

So that's a lot. A lot to play, and... Oh hey, what's this?

999

Nine hours, nine persons, nine doors, for the DS.. hmm.. well.. okay let's give it a try.
...
...

ALL THESE OTHER GAMES ARE NOW SHIT.
I can't play them. I can't.

Why?

The DS Game

It's 2 am, and I can't stop playing. First thing I do when I wake up- play more of this game. Played it all day. Finished it. Shit. The story is so well told and suspensful, the characters and their dialogues are well written, it's funny, it's smart, it's great.

I'd totaly make a whole new blog about the character design in this game.
I'd totaly make a whole new blog about the character design in this game.

I'd gladly continue to present the different aspects of 999's appeal, from the easily recognizable, greatly detailed (in terms of visual design) and fairly complex characters, to the engaging, unique story, but that's not the point of this blog. Let's move on.

So anyway, I'm a sucker for good story based games.

Then I return to my Steam games. I look for a good story, hungry for more. More. MORE!

Back to you, Steam

Bully

Story? What a piece of shit. What a big pile of excrement. These characters.. UUUGH! All of them, dumb asses. I know, that's the point, but it doesn't make it eaasier to deal with those fucking ASSHOLES. Every one of them. Every last one is a gargantuan dumb stereotypical asshole. The Nerds are nerdy as shit, the Jocks are a bunch of muscled idiots.. Goddamn.

Darksiders

Riiight.. there's no story here. Really. Maybe later on, but for now.. it's just "go there, kill that". And the main character is a big dumb tree trunk. War has NO personality. He barely even speaks. He utters all his sentences through his half clenched jaw, you know, tough guy style. His eyes are constantly narrow, and he doesn't mind the fact that everybody's treating him like a 5$ hooker.

I am SOOO bad ass. Holy shit. Do you see how bad ass I am? Hmm.. I should squint my eyes more, shouldn't I?
I am SOOO bad ass. Holy shit. Do you see how bad ass I am? Hmm.. I should squint my eyes more, shouldn't I?

War, do this, do that. Kill that guy. Bring me this. Bring me that. He's a fucking HORSEMAN of the APOCALYPSE. He's WAR GODDAMNIT. Act like WAR. Sheesh.

Just Cause 2

Thank god I've completed this game before 999. Oh thank the LORD in heavens. Oh, don't get me wrong it was SUPER fun, but the stroy is really cheesy. I like a good cheesy story, but this.. ermm.. yeah.

Mirror's Edge

Nope.

P.B. Winterbottom

An interesting title, I dig the whole "Pie Stealing" bit. Might play it some more.

Recettear

The dialogues are.. gah. The game's great though, it's really worth your time.

Shank

Hahaha, haha.. no.

Torchlight

Sto-ry? Never heard of it. Must be something new in vidja games. In Torchlight, we click on things untill they DIE mister.
Still a good game though.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

It's not that these games are BAD, I'm just in the mood for a game with some narrative and interesting characters. And in my humble opinion, these games don't really have this things.. they have great gameplay, but there's a plot shaped (?) hole in my heart..

So, my question's this Giant Bomb:

Any good story based games you know? They can be old, new, I don't care. Any ideas?

Darksiders gets better later on. I just got past the Dark tower ( fucking TEDIOUS!!!!) that boss is pretty cool. He explains some stuff and story does get a bit better. I'm at the part where I have to go collect all the pieces of the Trifore atm. So no clue how much longer the game is. Pretty good so far.

I myself am waiting for TL2. Mostly for the multiplayer.

I've been hearing a lot of good things about 9.9.9.  Once I get a DS again I'll have to pick it up. Also tried the Demo for Recettear. Reminds me of FFL:CC: My life as a King for the Wii. Instead of running a town however you run a shop. Seams fun.

Also. Wonder what game will be released on 11/11/11? Now thats some fucked up shit right there.

I've played through 999 once so far.  I was surprised (and greatly enjoyed) just how descriptive the game was when it came to...well, just about everything.  I actually cared about the characters and what happened to them.  It was a huge hit for me that came out of nowhere (I never would have known about it without the front page review)  I hope another run of the game is made so others can have an opportunity to play.

I wouldn't call it short. It can take around ~7 hours to beat it the first time through if you're reading everything. But boy, you will not want to put it down. The second you get the first ending you'll want to keep going to get the answers to all of the mysteries. You need to beat the game at least once before you can get the 'True' ending. I got all 6 endings in the course of 3 days. It's a well thought out and engaging story.

Man, that's the thing, it's not short at all. For me it took from playing since 10 am to about midnight non stop, mostly because some of the puzzles took me a while :/

Yeap, it took me about three~four days to get every ending. The late night session I talk about happened when I went for the true ending, and just could not put the thing down!
And you'll want to get the true ending. And hell, all the other ones.

The cool thing about this game, is that once you beat the game once, you can skip the parts you already saw on the previous playthroughs.  So they're making it super easy and fun to get every ending.

@TwoLines: Yeah it's great. The only thing I would have changed would have been the ability to fastforward through the puzzles that you have done already. Some lines of dialogue change in the middle of the puzzle rooms, but it could have handled the slowing down the same way that it does in the main story parts.

@armaan8014:  If I hadn't seen every episode of the VJ and BR Endurance Run, I'd totally buy and play that game.

@fishmicmuffin:  That WAS kind of a pain. But once you know what to do, you can solve the puzzles in about 3-5 minutes each.
Doing the same door for the 4th time, was a bit much though.

I like War's muted personality, he seems largely indifferent, like he's somewhat above everything which I think might be what you would expect from a Horseman of the Apocalypse. The story is pretty cheeseball, but I found it interesting enough with some decent intrigue. And some of War's one-liners were pretty great.

@AuthenticM: I will!

@Jonny7892:  Heavy Rain- no PS3 *Sad face*, ME 2- Played it, awesome story, GTA: Episodes from Liberty City- ARGH! Why didn't I buy it during Steam sale for 8 Euro? Damn, Alan Wake- Okay, I'll give it a shot, Enslaved- seems like a game I'd like, I'll try it out.

@MEATBALL: It pisses me off how that Navi counterpart treats him like garbage, and he has to oblige. God, I hope I get to kill it. I like Mark Hamill, but that thing is really annoying.
