Games I Played (Lots): 2012

Because I can never remember what I played when GOTY stuff comes around. A rolling log of the games I played this year with a brief comment about each.

List items

  • about 60hrs in I realised clicking a screen and fighting the same shit, again and again and again and again and again....is boring as hell. Great game but "that part at the end where the giant zerg invades the protoss city was a little weird" ~ Brad Muir. Also, Blizzard needs some fresh artistic talent....and a better handle of always online gaming.

  • It was fun having to break out a pen and paper to deal work my way through this one. I'm still partway through but jump back in every now and then to dig a little deeper. Completely managed to avoid turning to the internet to get through it. The reward of the satisfaction is worth it.

  • Dude! You HAVE to play this one. Brilliant story that outshines most other videogame plots. Hell it does better than the tv show and is head and shoulders above a boatload of movies, books, and comics floating around. Well so far....only the first two episodes are out at the moment.

  • BURST! Loved every minute of this over the top adventure. Not sure it's worth the inflated Australian price the game was released at. But I picked it up later and was more than happy with it at a discount. It's an interesting story and an experience....not so much a game.

  • I never picked up the original so 2012 wasn't that bad of a value proposition. It's ok, but really I just want the next Simcity. A few dozen hours in this one was enough to tied my over until 2013.

  • This is my Dark Soul's of 2012. There's no Capra Demon but there sure is a boatload of randomly assembled frustration in this one. I sunk a good portion of my gaming hours into this one so far and recommend it's brand of high fidelity action platforming to anyone (almost).

  • I....um....every now and then I boot this up and loose a week or two of my life. It scratches an itch that nothing else manages to but its always difficult to get back into again.

  • I picked this up on the back of some quicklook hype....and was instantly disappointed. I think this game is great and fairly accessible for someone who isn't big on 4x games. I immediately switched to Sword of the Stars II and was much more satisfied with that. The A.I bugs, flat combat, and lack of transparency in the way some of the systems (approval especially) work make this one a flop for me. Despite all the fanfare and praise around it.

  • Part of a mid-year 4x binge....madness! But it was kicked off by Dwarf Fortress, not a 4x game, but it kindled the desire for some deep crazy gameplay. It took a while to get into this one, the mechanics are dense and take a while to wrap your head around. The review scores for this one are disappointing, it launched broken and coped a bad wrap for it. It's up to par now and well worth a check in.

  • Great zen puzzler....that get's mind-bendingly frustrating at a certain point. Great visuals, great atmosphere, great game.

  • Rogue-like: check! Crazy fucked up creature design: check! Poking fun at crazy religious types: check! Well worth the meagre sum I picked this one up for. I really wanted a (hassle-free) controller the whole way through though =\

  • Picked this up in the steam sale. It's so-so but I got about 75% through before I put it now. It's ok but the constantly restarting at a lower level with a new faction style of gameplay got old quickly.

  • I...the disc just sort of fell in ok. I don't know why I'm playing even more of this game. Even less why I'm bouncing between this and Spelunky. Still on the 360, will probably buy the PC release when it comes out anyways.

  • Kicking off an adventure trip with this one. I never got around to it when it was new. Finally dove in. Great plot, great atmosphere, great game. Really digging the noir aesthetic and quirky logic puzzles in this one.

  • This might just be my game of 2012. Boatloads of awesome mechanics, a somewhat engaging story and a nice world to explore. I have a soft spot for Metroid inspired exploration games, and while Dust doesn't come close to the Metroid, it is really an awesome, must play game. The fury aesthetic is a little odd....but the gorgeous art and render quality keep it from being too distracting.

  • I was completely disappointed with this game. I don't have any patience for bad camera controls, environment puzzles that are difficult only because the camera won't swing to the right place, and sloppy controls. The plot in this one is ok, and I'll stick it out to the end of the game....but I was disappointed in the finished product. A shame really. Confirmation if nothing else that Souls series is the grown up Zelda we always wanted, not Darksiders.

  • The Mann vs. Machine co-op mode got me into this. I've never enjoyed the normal TF2 experience but I really dig the wave based co-op mode. Match making is a bitch (nothing unique though) but I've sunk a few dozen hours in despite this. Enjoyable, forgettable. It might get me into normal TF2 again though. HATZ!!

  • Played the hell out of this one. It had a good zeitgeist going for a reason. Great rogue-like with some surprising depth. Similar to Dungeons of Dredmor, this is another game that I can't seem to put down for very long, I just kept coming back to it every couple of days. Still trying to unlock all the damned stuff buried away here.

  • Playing catch up on this one. I really only played a couple of games, but those were about 10hrs each. Turns out Civ is still Civ yo. I haven't played it with the expansion that includes better combat, diplomacy and espionage. As it is fairly lack lustre, just another Civ game.

  • Phenomenally messed up...

  • Nostalgia trip. Well almost. It was easier to track down a version of this that play nice with Windows 7 than messing around with SimTower and Dosbox. A few hour stint turned into a few week, on-again off-again binge. Eventually playing was just an excuse to update the GB page.

  • A 3D $15 tutorial for Dwarf Fortress. Well not really but close. It has the same sort of basic idea and gameplay but in an isometric 3D environment. There are a lot of differences to DF, mainly the job system, and that's a good thing. Towns is more accessible as a whole and still a tonne of fun to play. A good stepping stone for anyone wanting to get into DF but to afraid to start. I'd sunk roughly 30 hours into this one within the first two days of grabbing it on steam.

  • Yeh I'm 12 months late to the party on this one. Kind of felt guilty picking it up for next to nothing. Just the right amount of dumb and the perfect way to break out of that The Walking Dead funk.

  • More of an honourable mention here. I have trouble getting into these sort of gathering/survival games for more than a week. I sunk a few good hours into this one though and will revisit it in a little more depth when it comes out of beta.

  • This game seems to be played almost exclusively by assholes. I keep trying to get into it despite this though. I've put a fair chunk of time in throughout the year and learned a little more about the moba scene in the process. That's something I suppose.
