Best of 2011

The best games of 2011.

  • I loved this game. It is the best game in the series, period. The tower defense was a bit annoying, but easily avoidable. On the other hand, I thought the improvements to the assassins recruitment stuff really personalized your team and made the experience much better than it was in brotherhood. I do not understand how getting a yearly iteration of a game that I love is a bad thing. Even if it turned out not to be in fact better, I would be happy to play a game with the same mechanics that adds only to the story. Innovation is great, but not every game (or series) has to scratch the innovation itch or push the boundaries of gaming. For example, if capcom gave me an 8 bit mega man (that is of the quality of 1-3) every year I would be a happy man. People did not in my opinion stop playing mega man because they were sick of mega man. They stopped playing because games 4- 8 were kinda shitty.

Ultimately I feel the same way about assassins creed. Until they start making shitty games, keep them coming.

  • The game had some issues, and in my opinion is not quite as good as 2, but I still loved the gameplay, the characters, and the set pieces (Sully is great, but I wanted to see more of the Elena/Drake dynamic). I am excited to see what else Naughty Dog can do, but I would also be totally happy with more Uncharted.

  • The game was great, but I just did not find the puzzles challenging in the way I did in the first game. This might be because I was already familiar with the mechanics. I have heard that the challenge really comes in the co-op mode, but 1st person makes my wife nauseous so I have not been able to give this a go. The writing and voice acting was of course off the charts.

  • This game is impressive... no question about it. But it has several issues that holds it back.

#1) Combat Sucks. It makes me very excited to try out Kingdoms of Amalur.

#2) Voice acting is repetitive and mediocre.

#3) PS3 Bug. It did not affect me until about 35 hours in, but after that it was shit.

    #4) Dungeons were incredibly repetitive.

#5) Creature types were incredibly limited.

#6) Story lines I experienced were mediocre at best.

I think for me it comes down to a matter of preference. When it comes to RPG's I care more about story and combat than open world sand box elements.

  • I have put in 10 hours or so and it is fun, but it has not quite clicked yet. It might move higher... time will tell.

  • Pure, dumb, fun.

  • Pure, dumb, fun (but slightly less fun than Renegade Ops).

  • Cool style with some nice creative gameplay.

  • My top late year addiction.

  • My top early year addiction.

  • This would be much higher on my list if I had friends to play with. I loved the game, but hit a wall with the single player.

  • Fun platformer, but has a bit to much style over substance.

  • Amazing style from one of my favorite genres (metroidvania), but for some reason I just got bored and put the game down. I think part of it might be the fact that the style is great, but does not really change from area to area (unlike a metroid).

  • Interesting game that I had some fun with, but it just did not hook me. I can't think of anything specific that was wrong with the game. I just put it down, and did not feel the need to pick it back up.

  • I had some ridiculous fun with this game this year, but it is hard to rationalize putting it into my top ten.

  • A valiant attempt at touch platformer controls. Not quite as tight as pix'n love rush, and not quite enough content. But it was an all around fun game that owned me for a few days.

  • Innovative/creative puzzle platformer. However, a few levels in I found myself randomly guessing until I found the solution.

  • I Have Not Played Yet. 2# play priority.

  • I Have Not Played Yet. 3# play priority.

  • I Have Not Played Yet. I am excited to try this game out. But with Zelda, Skyrim, Batman, and Mass Effect on the docket, I don't know when I will have the time.

  • I Have Not Played Yet. I played a couple of hours, probably not going to make my top ten. Like Dark Souls I do not know when I will be able to get back to this game.

  • I Have Not Played Yet. This game is really not my style or sense of humor, but I really should give it a shot at some point.

  • I Have Not Played Yet. I am not that excited for this game, but if I find some time I will give it a go.

  • I Have Not Played Yet. I played the Demo and am not really interested.
