I don't think anybody will care to read what I have to say since I only ever really lurk this site and never post, but here goes.
I don't really understand this whole thing. Maybe it's because I'm not part of the twitter world, but I miss out on a lot of this stuff.
From what I understand though, it's suppose to be about ethics in journalism, minus all the garbage to do with hate and threats. Of which, I'm not entirely sure I fully understand either. I think it's pretty clear, whether the people behind "Gamergate" want it to or not, it has become a place for some people to be hateful behind the guise of "a good cause". I don't think it really matters whether the intentions are good when things like this start happening. Your "cause" gets drowned out because your "cause" isn't being heard anymore.
When it's all said and done I don't even fully understand the desire to create a shit storm to get what you want to be heard. Using hashtags and the likes for things you think you want changed, I have never understood, again that may just be me and my none twitter aware self.
At the end of the day, these gaming websites and other mediums that people claim they want to change, need to make money. They to need to make some money to keep things going. The best way to get yourself heard is to stop supporting them. If a website you frequent does something you don't agree with, let them know. Write an email to someone, an editor maybe, telling them you don't like something. Stop going to the website if you have to. It may not seem like much, but if enough people stop going to a website, the people running it will take notice. "Hey, our ad revenue is way down. What's happening?". We as users are their source of income. I've been lurking Giantbomb for a long time and I like to think they're a fairly respectable bunch of human beings. Thus, I give them my money and support. I continue to go to the site. I continue to use it, pretty much exclusively for gaming type things. If something were to ever happen where I didn't agree with what was going on, I would let them know and potentially stop supporting them.
I think Jeff and the crew did the right thing by writing about what's been going on and how they feel about it.
Anyway, that's my two cents and probably like my 3rd ever post.
