Things GTAV Needs

Vehicle saving and customization. GTA4 had the half-measure of saving vehicles in the apartments' parking spaces. But if an NPC decided to drive off in it at the end of a mission, it was gone. So whether I can save and tweak to my heart's content as in SR3, or I have to save up and buy them like Sleeping Dogs, I want to be able to find a car I like, paint it, and keep it forever.

Dynamic combat. Open world games have shown us recently that they don't have to sacrifice when it comes to combat. Players have every reason to demand finesse. Niko Bellic was stiff as a board.

Traversal. Not just running and jumping, but climbing, squatting, rolling, vaulting, and diving. Anything less will be a disappointment.

Co-Op. The technological limitations are surmountable by now, as SR3 has shown.

Repeatable side missions. Making your own fun - which usually boiled down to getting a 5 star wanted level and seeing how long you could survive - is well and good. It's part of the joy of an open world game. But some other reasons to keep coming back certainly wouldn't go amiss.

I agree with the co-op and customization of vehicles.

I hate when a npc knocks my car out of the parking zone, which causes me to lose it. Plus co-op is always fun.

To be honest, if all they change from GTAIV is to add mid-mission checkpoints (which I assume are an inevitability) and remove the cellphone bullshit, I would be totally okay with it.

The car customization in Saints Row 3 was great. I hope to see GTA V adopt this.

I would be fine if the hand to hand combat was limited if the gunplay was good. RDR was a step in the right direction.

Decent traversal would be nice.

Elaborate please. What was wrong with Niko's hand to hand combat? Or gun combat?

I think Sleeping Dogs nailed it. An action character is not supposed to climb like a spider (Drake) nor turn into a grappling ninja (Rico) but rather have a little grace and awareness of the surroundings. Anything more than Wei's moves is too unrealistic for Grand Theft Auto, anything less is too boring.

Co-Op. The technological limitations are surmountable by now, as SR3 has shown.

I hope to god not. It's enough as it is that Rockstar is wasting resources on multiplayer, you want them to make co-op too? Don't compare it to Saints Row, that game is an arcade third person shooter with a good sense of humor, Grand Theft Auto has detail, voice acting, animation, physics and scale out the ass, not to mention the abundance of missions.

Anyone who compares Saints Row to Grand Theft Auto doesn't realize how gigantic the latter is, production and detail and polish and scale wise, compared to the arcadish SR.

I agree about the combat, but I also don't want it to turn into Assassin's Creed. Niko should have been a bit more of a badass given what he could do in cut scenes with CQC, but I don't want there to be an attack/counter attack sytem either. It just makes combat feel like a side game then instead of being part of the action.

I haven't played The Lost and The Damned, but I heard it has checkpoints in it, and if so there's no way GTAV won't.

Side missions/activities

GTAIV had very few of those and they were boring as hell

If they don't include fun side stuff they will have a giant empty and boring open world

It needs to choose if it's going to be a serious setting or parody. It was weird in GTA 4.

This, GTAIV might not have been very humorous in the tone itself. But the satire and social commentary was as present as ever. If not more.

To me while the combat was servicable it was still comparitively stiff to other open world games, especially SR3. If you played with the lock on mechanic it was too easy, without it the aiming was too swimmy to compare to a 3rd person shooter or even other open world games like SR3.

Agree with you on the bit about being like Sleeping Dogs in terms of movement. Nico felt really stiff and awkward to move sometimes, especially when not running too, so they should fix that.

The IV DLC had checkpoints so I'm not worried, but the vehicle save thing would be a nice touch. I'd also like more freedom in character customization. Not SR style but having more clothing options and stuff like tats would be cool. GTA SA had more than IV did and it was weird to see the downgrade.

I hope they don't listen to the people that complain about the car handling in GTA IV and drastically change it. The driving in that game is so good.

Let Rockstar do what they have to. They have open world games nailed down to perfection. SR3 still proved that there are ways to improve the ope world, but I'd vastly prefer another GTA over SR. Rockstar is unbeatable at their best and hopefully GTAV delivers.

I would go out of my way to get the BMW-like car in GTAIV because once Niko started making a name for himself, that was the type of car I imagined him driving. I also would buy every suit and strictly wear those.

It got so bad that if there was a mission where I felt that I would lose my car, I'd take a cab to the marker instead. It only worked for so long, though.

Yep, it wasn't wonky at all, it was just obvious cars had different weights, IE turning before it looks like you should because the weight of the car guides you through the turn. Honestly, people were way too critical of GTAIV, sure it was a change in tone, but its the next numbered GTA. vice city and san andreas were innovations on the third GTA, GTAIV of course would be a big step because it was not iterative on the tone. Somehow, that's hard for people to understand.

More than anything else, I just hope they take the lessons learned from RDR and LA Noire and apply them here. Stuff like regenerating health and making the run button a shoulder button, instead of forcing me to take my thumb off the right stick. And stuff like making the combat better, because it felt kinda clunky in GTAIV, but not so clunky in RDR.

I hope that the enemies don't take too many shots. 1 bullet per guy would be my preference.

I hope they pace the story better than GTA4. It felt like everything that happened in GTA4 took place in like a week.

I was referring to the "Hey cousin! Let's go bowling!" aspect of the cell phone. Using it as the menu navigation system was actually quite inspired.

Right you are, I think that whole system was dumb, and really past the end of the game I realized I never really needed to 'max out' my respect and friendships with anyone. To add more crap, even when I am done with the game, people phone me up pestering me while I try to do a double backflip on my bike on a building. Other than for achievements, that system was useless.

Also, I am going to double back and say, while I did think phone menu navigation was slick and fast, I hope they kind of tone it down, it seemed everything you wanted to do went through that phone. They should keep it for V, but maybe make it a map while not being used, and limit it to accessing mission/game mode stuff.

You know, if you left out the first part of that sentence it would sound like helpful advice, and I'd probably thank you. But since you felt like adding internet snark, I can't say the same.

i agree OP, no half-measures, FULL-MEASURES now on only! Remember what Mike said!
