GOTY 2014

Gonna submit this to the aggregate list.

This list only includes games that were BOTH released in 2014 AND played by me in 2014. This of course means there are many games I didn't get to playing for whatever reason that I would have liked to. These are: Kingdom Hearts 2.5, Evil Within, Crimzon Clover, Bayonetta 2, Donkey Kong:Tropical Freeze, Geometry Wars 3, Steins Gate, Guilty Gear XrD, Littlewitch Romanesque.

I also will be including re-releases if they are relevant to me.

Overall I'd give 2014 a (*5/10*)

Here are some other-category awards, kinda based on the ones Giant Bomb officially did:

Best Old Game: Dodonpachi Saidaioujou (2013). Was on my list last year but shmups tend to get better when you put more effort into them and now I'd have rated it higher.

Console of the Year: Vita. I felt like the quality of ports to PC took a slight dip this year, so I award this to Vita for having games that work.

Best Looking Game: Senran Kagura Bon Appetit. I didn't even need to mod this one!!

List items

  • Not as good as Dark Souls but it's more Souls so it's all good.

  • I played the original on an old laptop so the new engine makes a huge difference for me.

  • I don't expect much difference between rhythm game sequels, but this game managed to make small differences for the better: more challenge and less grind.

  • Similar gameplay to the first but very different progression. Might have less replayability than 1 but once you get used to the changes it's almost as fun.

  • I've finished this game without playing the first and have realised that was a big mistake. Nonetheless, this is the only other game besides Dark Souls II this year where I couldn't stop playing until I finished. Story had me hooked and there are more extras than you'd expect from a visual novel.

  • An under-appreciated indie game. Far from perfect but the levels are designed so well and it has the most addictive scoring system I've ever seen in a platformer.

  • Another under-appreciated indie platformer. I grew up with a Mega Drive so this envokes a lot of nostalgia for me. Very well put together package overall, especially for an indie.

  • More back to basics than Space Giraffe, so it's easier to get into. It's fun, but I do wish it were a bit shorter. If it weren't on a system with sleep mode I'd never finish a game.

  • Unique for a FPS. It's fun to play, requiring a lot of spacial awareness. The "story", on the other hand, is the most abysmally bad thing I've ever seen. It's all skippable though so it's fine.

  • The first non-handheld LittleBigPlanet I've played. It needs patching, which is why it's at the bottom of this list. It's still fun as it is though. The new characters are great, mostly because their running speed is much faster.

  • Quick to be boring, but watching your favourite celebrities, characters, and RL peeps make out is oddly amusing.
