If They Came To Hear Me Beg - Halo Reach Screenshot

Took a sequence of screen shots from my If They Came To Hear Me Beg attempt.

Dropping in to say
Dropping in to say "Hi!"

ITCTHMB - They will be disappointed
ITCTHMB - They will be disappointed

All in all, I found this to be a fairly frustrating achievement that is wonky to unlock.  On my 3rd attempt I hit an assassination, but it did not unlock.  15 minutes and 50 attempts later, I got another assassination and a successful unlock.  I think the trouble is that if you land on top or hit the side of the elite before beginning the assassination, then the fall would not be fatal and the achievement does not unlock.

Halo Reach: Ranking Up - Commander

So, the rank cap was lifted in Reach yesterday and it was perfect timing for me.  I was sitting at Lt. Col Grade 3 and after the rank lifted I needed about 10K credits to rank up to Commander.  Ended up getting that in my playing yesterday.

I know when I obtained Lt. Colonel - Oct 22nd - because I picked up the Make It Rain achievement that same day.  That makes 11 days between Lt. Col and Commander for me.  There is a 150K credit gain needed between those ranks, which means I've earned ~13,600 credits per day over the past week and a half.  Colonel is 250K credits above Commander, so I'll take ~18 days to rank up to Colonel if I maintain my current pace.

It takes 2 million credits to reach General and at my current pace that will take me almost exactly 100 days.  My guess is I won't maintain my current pace for 100 days, but I bet I'll reach General within the first year of Halo Reach's release.

I tend to buy armory items that I feel give the most impact and so far that has mostly been a few firefight voices, visor colors, and a few helmet variations.  Right now I'm using Emile's helmet (etched skull on the visor) with black visor color.  There are some pieces (and I have bought a few) that use more of the secondary color or other differences I like.

My Sad Attempt at a Halo Themed Jack-O-Lantern

I set my sights low and decided to carve a very simple angry superintendent pumpkin.  I googled for similar pumpkins and found some really nice looking ones with way more details, but I went for an "Eyes Only" design.

Did you carve a video game themed pumpkin, or any pumpkin?

Killtrocity: Halo Reach Screenshot

Killtrocity:  The measurement of how fast Spartans die.
Killtrocity:  The measurement of how fast Spartans die.

Managed a killtrocity (6 kills within 4 seconds) in a multiteam match a week or so ago using just grenades and the DMR (or AR or pistol, I can't remember for sure.)  Felt good to unlock the avatar awarded for a killtac with a bonus kill as a cherry on top.  Just before the sequence began I was awarded an assist (so close to a Killamanjaro...)  I imagine stories of barely missed multikills in Halo are about as interesting as bad beat poker tales, so I'll end this blog now.  :-D

Two Spartans One Ghost: Halo Reach Screenshot

Two Spartans One Ghost
Two Spartans One Ghost
This gave me a double kill on an armor lock smash of an enemy ghost.  The driver and a mate who was surfing on top of the ghost for whatever reason.  The true win of this moment is that these guys took the ghost from a jerk on my own team who jacked it from me a few seconds earlier.  Sweet justice.

I'm hoping to capture a screen every so often from my Reach games and post it up.  Video clips are often more interesting, but it's a lot more trouble to get them off XBL to share outside of a 360.  I wish they allowed more files in your share if they were low MB things like screenshots, but c'est la vie.  My current plan is to leave 2 slots of my share for a rotating set of screens, but I've already had to remove a few clips I liked to make room for this setup.  Sad spartan face.

Does anyone play Arena?

The in-game image for the Arena playlist shows a blue team dude attempting to yoink an assassination away from his blue brother.  Bungie is showing the blueprint to higher scores, I suppose.

I've given Arena a shot, but I find it to be less enjoyable than the other playlists.
  1. Way more quitters.  I haven't played nearly as much arena as other playlists, but one day's gaming I had 4 matches IN A ROW where at least 2 of my 4 team mates quit early in the match.  This is simply no fun at all.  This could be fixed by having a FFA arena playlist.  My guess is some players try to quickly get a feel for the match, if they determine they are outmatched, they then quit out to avoid a low score.  Hopefully the system actually does give them a very low score in this case, but I think it should be made very clear that this is happening.  For example in the "Leave Game" menu it should say "Do you want to leave the game and accept a 0 point score for this match?"
  2. The ranking is based on a FFA system despite it being a team playlist.  I don't like that you are pretty much forced to go Rambo to boost your score and playing cautious to keep a + K/D spread (helping your team) leads to lower scores.

I think it is very fitting that the in-game image for Arena shows a blue guy attempting to get a Yoink.

Of course, I could play Arena with enough friends to flesh out my team and avoid these problems, but the fact is I tend to play Reach when very few of my XBL friends are online and I'm just not going to be able to play with a full team much at all.

I planned to play 3 matches on at least 10 days this season and get a division, but after completing 4 days I realized I just wasn't having fun in this hopper and stopped.  Are others enjoying the Arena or is this a common conclusion?

No big complaints about the Halo Reach challenges today.

Weekly:

4000cR - All in a Week's Work
Kill 1000 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking this week.
A tall order, but nice to work towards over a week.   This is an average of about 143 kills per day, every day this week.  I don't know if I'll manage this one...  Of course, I thought the same thing about the weekly challenge to complete 50 rounds of Firefight and I ended up having a lot of fun working through it.

Daily:

500cR - Fire When Ready
Kill 50 enemies in multiplayer Matchmaking
 'Nuff said.

2000cR - One Spartan Army
Kill 400 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking.
Gruntpocalypse is the quickest way to rack up kills in Firefight, especially now that you can't pick up a fuel rod in sniper fight.

500cR -  Short, Controlled Bursts
Kill 50 enemies with automatic weapons in the Campaign today.
There are many options for this one.
  • I might do this in Winter Contingency on Heroic and try for a +1 to Flawless Cowboy at the same time.
  • Or you could load a rally point where you start with an assault rifle (Exodus - Alpha for example) and reload after you clean up a dozen grunts.
  • Another option would be the beginning of Nightfall on normal.  Assassinate the lone elite and clean up the grunts with your assault rifle.  This wouldn't be the quickest spot, but I enjoy that sequence and you can revert to just before you assassinate the elite over and over.

1200cR - Aggressive Negotiations
Earn at least 17 kills in a multiplayer Matchmaking game.
Playing a round of Crazy King in Rumble Pit is my favorite way to notch a ton of kills in one match.  But 17 isn't too bad, should be able to manage this in many of the modes with a decent showing.

Points Pyramid (Halo Reach daily challenge) the easy way

2500cr - Points Pyramid
Score 25,000 points on any Campaign mission.

  • Long Night of Solace - Rally Point Alpha - This is the beginning of the space fighting section.
  • Heroic difficulty + turn on all point boosting skulls - There are 9 of them and they don't seem to make any difference in the spaceship sections.
  • Make sure you turn on either team or FFA scoring.
I cracked 25K in the first wave of banshees, probably about one minute after the enemies begin to appear.

For comparison, I played Winter Contingency on Heroic with Famine, Thunderstorm, and Tilt activated for the daily challenge yesterday.  Did not die (+1 to Flawless Cowboy!) and barely cracked 25,000.

Easiest Halo Reach Daily Challenge Day yet? (10/21/10)

3500cR - Be Their Huckleberry
Kill 200 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking with the pistol.

Two rounds of gruntpocalypse.  Just use the pistol until you get this challenge at some point in the second match, of course.

1000cR - Blastin' and Relaxin'
Kill 90 enemies in any game mode in Reach.
This will unlock as you play towards Be Their Huckleberry.

1000cR - The House of Blue Leaves
Kill 88 enemies in a single Firefight Matchmaking game on Heroic.
This will unlock as you play towards Be Their Huckleberry.  Nice Kill Bill reference here, BTW.

500cR - Above the Law
Complete a Round in Firefight Matchmaking without dying.
Possible that this will unlock  as you play towards Be Their Huckleberry.    But, it's likely that relying on the pistol will lead to a few deaths.  If that is the case it's probably easiest to play standard Firefight Matchmaking and be careful to hang back so you don't buy the farm.  I like to hide when the phantoms are overhead as a random turret blast from a phantom can knock you out quickly.  If you want to do it in score attack, I find it easiest to complete a round without dying with Gruntpocalypse on Outpost.  Stay on the roof except for when you reload and the grunts only have one way up to flank you.

Two rounds of gruntpocalypse will give you the first 3 challenges and 5500cr, easily.

Assuming I have 20 minutes to play some Reach this evening I should make Lt. Colonel and get the final achievement.  Woot!

Regret that I didn't get the first weekly Halo Reach challenge

The first weekly challenge was to complete 9 missions on Heroic.  I wanted to play through the game on Normal first, and take my time with it, so I didn't really give this challenge much of a try.  But, since then I've completed every weekly challenge and it would be fun to see how long I could go before I missed a week.

So far, I think this week's challenge is probably the most *erm* challenging, depending on which hoppers and gametypes you play most.  I nabbed it on the first day, but I was specifically playing just for 30 kills in a single match.

50 rounds of firefight was the most time consuming, but not difficult to do.

I don't like the weekly challenges that must be achieved in a single day or a single match.  That should be a daily challenge, not a weekly challenge.  So far we've had one to complete all of the daily challenges (got that one the first day) and the aforementioned challenge to  get 30 kills in a single match.  You could have unlocked that weekly challenge in the first 15 minutes of playing on Monday.  (It took me 4 matches IIRC, and that's because standard slayer matches were voted until my 4th Rumble Pit match.)
