According to some on Reddit, this was all a cheap PR stunt for some free indie game inspired by Sillent Hill.

It was to good to be true.

No, that was blackhoundgame.com, which appears to have been someone quickly piggybacking off the popularity of this, the people running ingsoc.org said they were not affiliated.

@mirado: You should probably read the replies to that most recent tweet. It's nothing.

What makes you say that? "You only play as Snake, no other characters." - Kojima

This is almost certainly nothing. For one thing, the countdown timer is set by reading your local time on your computer. Go ahead and try it; set your date and time at the control panel then go and search the site. That alone is very amateurish.

Also, the countdown ends at 4:20 on 9/11. I think this is a bush-league impostor that has been catapulted to stardom by coincidences.

Plenty of timers go by your local clock. It's indeed a bit on the amateur side but you don't actually unlock it until it's ready, I've seen similar countdown "issues" with numerous big game announcements. Also it ends at 5:20, not 4:20. It's 4:20 PST... but we're in PDT, so it's 5:20.

@xbob42: The biggest issue with that is that Konami is a multi-million dollar company that would not drag its reputation through the mud and risk lowering their stocks/income and losing employees because Kojima asked nicely.

On the other hand, all of this keeps Konami in the spotlight for well over a year so far... and if it ended with a fucking mind-blowing conclusion to the game and endless praise and continued discussion, I imagine their stocks would probably do just fine, as that would be totally unprecedented and reported everywhere. I'm not saying that IS the case, obviously the whole thing could be one big dumb hoax (Even though we've got some intriguing tweets from Kojima and staff... nothing concrete, but it fits really well.) but if it's not... it would be insane.

If it was anyone but Kojima I wouldn't even give it a second thought... but the themes on display in the game and how it was marketed to us over the years, the Moby Dick studios thing, all the missing content and things like "Players can return to Camp Omega" and such not actually being there. And I could totally see the Konami/Kojima split being a ridiculous over the top ruse. Someone said Kojima's lies are big, in your face, demand your attention... tell me, who here has not heard about the Kojima/Konami thing repeatedly over the past 8 months? There was no way to escape it.

It could just as easily be true that Konami really is the worst and Kojima is done with them, but it would be such a goddamned EVENT if that wasn't the case. It would be a landmark in gaming we would not soon forget.

Nope, because honestly the gameplay has always been mediocre at best and the reason to play the games is the bat shit crazy stories and characters. The best star wars movie was directed by somebody besides lucas

You know, I'd argue that the best Metal Gear game was the one not made by Kojima (Rising). It's got the same wacky nonsense that a lot of people come to metal gear for, but feels much more cohesive by nature of cutting out most of the indulgent excess (both in gameplay and story) that Kojima is guilty of. It's very, very faithful, while at the same being far more tonally consistent than any of the rest of the series. Not to mention that it's far better as action game than the rest of the series are as stealth games.

I actually agree with this entirely. I loved Rising way more than any other Metal Gear game. It had the trademark insanity and all the lengthy monologues were reduced to "moderate monologues" which is great because half the shit Metal Gear characters say is melodramatic bullshit I don't want to hear because it's just a different way of saying the same shit from the previous games. So you cut out the filler in both gameplay and dialogue and then make the game actually really fun to play and you've got something really special. And I've never laughed so hard at a video game in my life as at that final boss fight. Holy shit even after all the hype about it I wasn't expecting it to crack me up so hard.

I really don' know what to think of the whole MPP5 live event thing.

It being live there'll just be loads of distractions to the crew (well, more than usual), probably some kind of crowd noise (which is really annoying most of the time) and almost no room for control room nonsense.

We'll have to wait and see I guess, but right now I'm not that into this idea.

I've never really been a fan of any GB content live on any floor. It's at best just harder to hear and follow and at worst awkward because of all the socially awkward folks in the crowd. I know it's probably fun for the GB crew, and they gotta produce content while out, but MAN, it feels vastly inferior to "proper" content. It's why I've always hated E3 videos, just loud raucous nonsense that seems a thousand times less interesting than their normal stuff.

Where is all of the fervor for this game coming from? I mean it's fun, sure, but it isn't that fun..

It might actually be one of the best multiplayer games I've ever played. It's insanely, ridiculously fun. Like... the exhibition stuff and seasons are alright, but playing it with teammates and having both teams that are skilled at actual teamplay is like a friggin' ballet. It's intense, supremely skill-based and can be played in quick sessions or for hours.

Just the complete feeling of satisfaction as you bounce the ball to a teammate and back to you and back to them and slamming it into the goal is... unreal. It's pure, unadulterated skill, but also complete silly fun. Even when you're losing it's a total blast.

Though I suppose if your entire team is awful and you're all trying to be strikers then you might find it less fun.
