@puppymehard: I say this with zero reservation: I will not play a single portable Monster Hunter game anymore, save for perhaps the Switch. I've bounced off of every 3DS entry and it shook my faith that I would ever enjoy a MH game beyond theoretically. MHW convinced me otherwise.

@hassun: I felt that way on PS4. I felt pretty checked out, then I got the pc version more or less for free. I'm all the way back in. The update changes the entire way a lot of the characters feel, Ana and her ult shake up the balance and it just feels like a way more aggressive game.

@dystopiax: The twist was just kind of telegraphed in a way that I didn't find super satisfying. It felt like it could have been cool but I was so kind of over the Drebin-esque exposition of the bosses a la MGS4 that I really stopped caring about the story. And for the most part, I'd agree about the Dark Souls level of it feels fair, except that the final bullet hell forms are so goddamn unique from most of the rest of the fight with any boss.

Never mind getting stuck on The Burst? where the sniper just runs around the map and your only choice is to chase her and hope she stays in one place. The sniper is where my opinion of this game shifted from positive with problems to problematic with positives.

@jesushammer: It's got some major story issues for sure. The game is borderline obsessive about maintaining it's vagueries and it's not really to it's credit. There's a pretty world and the audio design is great, but some of the bosses are straight up slogs that are not any actual fun.

So far, I'm pretty sure I've died at least once on every boss past the second's final form because you're being asked to participate in a bullet hell ballet that feels borderline unfair. It seems like the game is all about repetition and improvement but... It's kind of not a game I want to play more than I have to just because it is unnecessarily punishing, especially with later stages where falling off platforms becomes a hazard during combat as if there wasn't already enough to deal with on screen.

@derpious: They ride a really tight line between sparse and minimalist. If it weren't for the visual flair and lighting effects I don't think it would hold up as well, but as a total package to include the audio design, it's all really cohesive.

I think these guys are being a little hyper critical of this game, I feel like if this was the new setting for a far cry game it would be received a different reception. Maybe because we've become jaded about the design progression of Far Cry game, but it annoys me that Far Cry seems to get a pass whereas homefront which i believe to be not dissimilar gets a harsher eye. I understand why (it's past) but if you were trying to get to a relatively objective judgement of the game, then thinking this is a really valuable, emotional or politically more interesting game than a Far Cry game seems to be the wrong way to approach it.

I think they're being appropriate critical about the things that need to be critiqued. The game paints itself to be an emotional and political tale, taking itself incredibly seriously, which doesn't work out to it's benefit. The city feels bland and generic and nothing about you actually playing the game really feels good, from aiming to mantling and movement. Once I realized that this was going to be an open world game and tried some of the objectives, my first thought was "Oh, so it's Far Cry".

Which would be fine if there weren't so many gameplay and design issues otherwise

This game runs fucking atrociously on PS4 and it makes it real hard to appreciate anything it does right considering this game runs between 15-25fps with constant hitching and looks like a last gen title.

Just to chime in a little too late on the conversation: I don't think anybody particularly has an issue with Jeff being down on games if that's how he feels. The issue stems from the fact that it can really influence the tone and feel of any content he's in because he's such a powerful influence and feels so strongly. And that's not bad!

But more oft than not, he is a super critical dude who can accurately, precisely and passionately convey what he dislikes and seems to be able to do that more than his likes.

He's entitled to his opinion! I don't think anyone tends to deny that, but there was a decent chunk of time where I stopped regularly listening to the Bombcast because there was no real enthusiasm and most of the crew fed off each other's negativity and down on it attitudes.

And, ironically enough, all of this is just my opinion. I love Jeff and I would never have him change, but he has become a much more aggressively negative critic and it does something to the overall tone. That's fine! And it's the biggest reason that I am all for having Drew and Dan on the podcast now. Drew has always been the wildcard of the podcast crew with his additions to it and Dan is pure chaos and childlike glee.

/tl;dr downer tones are a bummer, but Jeff's opinions are still valid, and God bless Drew and Dan for their wild card natures.
