My biggest disappointment of the year is a game I haven't, or rather won't, play. Halo 5.
I know reviewers keep saying it's great. But I can't get past the lack of split-screen co-op. I know many -probably most- people don't care about it. It's considered a legacy feature that "no one" uses, but I don't really believe that and I know how important it was to me. I've always played Halo with my friends. And we always played split-screen. We'd beat the campaign, go through all the difficulties, unlock the secrets, play the multiplayer together. Sharing the fun and the chaos and the entire experience.
I'm sure the online is a suitable replacement for most folks. But I can't high-five my friend when he's in another zip code. And after watching the Quick Look and finding out that they pretty much left out every multiplayer mode I enjoy (Oddball, Crazy King, KotH, BTB, pretty much anything that isn't a Team Slayer variant) as well as leaving Forge for a nebulous "It's Coming" release somewhere down the line... all that makes me certain I did the right thing in not bothering to pick up a copy.
I would still like to play the campaign someday. But it'll be a used copy far down the line. I've taken that money and plan to buy Star Wars: Battle Front and CoD:Blops 3, both of which feature split-screen modes I can play with my friends the way I used to play Halo with them. First time I've missed a Halo launch in 14 years. Also my first CoD launch purchase for that matter.
And just for the sake of saying it, please don't assume I'm one of those people who complains often. I'm really not. I liked Halo 4's multiplayer, and Halo Reach's multiplayer. When people were going nuts about it, saying this or that on forums and on Bungie Net, I just kept on playing. I don't like being the guy complaining about Halo. I'd rather go back to being the guy who makes funny little cartoons about Halo. But those days, I suppose, have passed.
