Actually, it was ruined in the name of a thread right here on Giantbomb before I ever bought the game.

My internet has been busted for a week so it was handy for me as I got zero spoilers.
 
That ending bummed me out, it's just not the same once you beat it.

Wasn't totally spoiled for me, did see a couple of people mentioning a Jack fellow you play as and I was likst "huh?" but I kinda figured it would end as it did anyway, only way a western can really end :P

Some asshole on Youtube spoiled it in the comments for Far Away (song that play when you enter Mexico), it was the second comment below the video. So kinda my own fault, but learned a lesson at least.

I never played the game or will, for that matter, so spoilers came naturally.

Nope. I wasn't really interested in the game for very long before ordering it, so I only had to avoid information for a couple days.

I stayed away from all video game sites while playing it. But I kind of had the end figured out before long, I mean there really was no other way to end the game. 

for me i was looking on the red dead wiki for hunting tips and it said that "John or Jack won't skin the animal if you horse is on top" i then proceded to click on jack as i was intrigued only for there to be no spoiler warning and it told me that john died
so i knew his death was coming but not when which in my opinion was worse than knowing when or not knowing because i kept waiting for this charecter i loved to die but it kept not happening but then came along the rancher missions so i assumed these were just post game missions but then i find out he gets shot to death like mad

I found out he died in the end, but I didn't know that you would start playing as his son.

Not spoiled, but the game telegraphs it a fair bit before it happens.

Some prick spoiled the game in a thread title on the forums. He was banned.

Some thoughtless scumbag on Gamespot posted the ending spoiler in the goddamn comments of the video review.

Nah I played it smart this time and avoided everything but Rockstar's own videos up until I got the game. Maybe I'd like GTA4 more if I had done this instead of spending a year hypothesizing and hyping on gtaforums.
 
And I stayed off the internet altogether while playing it RDR, which wasn't that difficult. The game's fucking engrossing.

It was self spoiled. I never read what happened but I guessed it based on the title.  
 
Maybe I've seen too many movies or read too many books but "redemption" usually only happens a couple of ways in story telling.

I knew John died, and I heard about a JAck Marston, but I didnt know exactly what happened, but it still sucked

Yeah, I fell for the thread title too. Shame because the ending is well done.

The moment I saw mention of "Jack Marston" listed casually on a Red Dead Wiki, I stopped being an achievement whore and left the sites alone. I saw mention that you could play as him, but thankfully nothing specific about how that comes to be, so the ending still had a really strong impact on me. Amazing game.

Saw a story on Gamesradar about main characters who die at the end of their respective games.  
Being intrigued to see what they would talk about, I jumped right on in, not expecting them to be joking about about games that came out within the last couple of months. My fault for confusing GR with a blog that might seriously tackle the subject matter. :P

Half spoiled. I saw someone say something about it but it was only part of the ending. Not enough to ruin it, I was still really surprised and rendered speechless by the ending.

I didnt know the ending, however it was pretty predictable nearer the time. I didnt like the ending, credits after the gravestone saying John Marston would have been better, we all knew that his son was probably going to follow in his lead anyway. The change to Jack also created no emotion, I wanted to be sad but it never gave me a chance to mull it over in the credits. 

Any times something looked like it would be spoilerish at all I just avoided, ended up not spoiling it at all. The only thing I think I seen was something like "you have to do this as John Marsdon" which just got me intrigued.

This is why I pretty much just avoid videogame forums, reviews, and video reviews (especially GT's, they love to put spoilers in their video reviews) when I care about the story of the game I'm playing. You can't rely on the tactic of only going into threads that don't seem spoilerish because there's always that dick who has to spoil everything for everyone else, no matter what kind of thread or video it is.
 
Sure I may create a thread someone else already made or get into a discussion a couple days late, but it's worth it if I can enjoy the game to the fullest and enjoy every twist and turn.

Some guy spoiled the end in the title of his thread. So the smart members of GB instead of flagging the topic and letting it get buried kept posting in it and bumping it to the first page so everyone could read it.

Yeah, I got it ruined for me.

It wasn't "ruined" for me. I knew there was a buzz about it, and I wanted to see what that was about. I got the whole death thing and just figured I'd see how they carried it off. I thought it was good. Dared to be bitter sweet. I might have actually disliked the ending more if it hadn't been "spoiled."
