Braid Review

Braid asks that you forget everything you know about time.

This puzzle would leave Mario a quivering mess.
This puzzle would leave Mario a quivering mess.
Much has been made of the indie pedigree of Jonathan Blow's Braid. This is, by and large, a one-man show, and not just on the development side. At the same time that it challenges the player with box-bending time-manipulation puzzles, Braid tells a story of one man's emotional loss and his obsessive hunt for a redemptive Princess. While the actual prose can feel like a mopey-if-imaginative teenager's blog, I still have to applaud Braid for its willingness to focus its storytelling on such personal issues as loss and regret. But the real reason Braid works is its gameplay, which is diabolically clever and incredibly rewarding.

Tim is a heartbroken young man in a suit and tie who must traverse a series of worlds, each with its own set of rules about how time works, in his search for the Princess. His journey is paralleled by memories of a past relationship that went from sweet to sour, but the correlation between the two threads remains ambiguous until the last, revelatory level. There's a navel-gazing quality to the writing that can make it intermittently insufferable. There's also some genuine insight about the often counterintuitive arc of a romantic relationship, and the story compliments the nature of the gameplay nicely.

The game's oddly confessional story makes it easy to shuffle into the indie game name game, but what makes Braid exceptional is that it integrates so elegantly into some really clever game design. There are only two types of enemies, a beige head on legs that bears no actionable similarities to a Goomba, and a pink bunny that pops out of the ground and screeches like a cat. There's no penalty for death, and you could run through the game's five worlds in a few minutes if you cared to. If you did, though, you'd be missing the point, as your real objective is to collect puzzle pieces that have been tucked away behind locked doors and in seemingly unreachable corners of the world.

There's some confusion about which castle the Princess is in.
There's some confusion about which castle the Princess is in.
Now Tim can run and Tim can jump, but Tim's most notable ability is time manipulation. With the press of a button you can rewind time all the way back to the beginning of the level. This starts out simply enough in the first world, where the ability to rewind time is mostly used to correct a badly timed jump. In the next world, though, you start encountering objects that are unaffected by your manipulation of time, and following that, you'll find that the passage of time for the world is dictated by Tim's movement across the screen. Move to the right, and time moves forward; move to the left, time rewinds. After that, it just gets weird. Braid uses these different time behaviors to create puzzles that force you to ignore much of what you know about how time and space relate.

As such, Braid can be insanely frustrating, but this seems to be by design. The game is filled with red-herrings and double red-herrings. Each world is just long enough that, by the time you've trained your logic muscles to play by a specific, peculiar set of rules, you're off to the next world, where the rules have been changed completely. This constant re-education can leave you feeling punch-drunk. The solutions can take a long, long time to reveal themselves to you, but you feel like the smartest person in the world right after you finish a particularly head-wringing puzzle. Alternately, you may also find yourself giving your TV the finger.

There are some oblique post-end-game challenges to seek out once you've finished Braid, but for the most part, once you've cracked the code and solved all the puzzles, there's not much reason to revisit it. As such, the recent release of Braid on the PlayStation Network doesn't have a lot to offer players who've already been on this adventure, since it's indistinguishable from Braid's Xbox Live Arcade release. If you've not played Braid before, though, everything about it--from the crisp, painterly artwork to the brain-cramping puzzles--still holds up rather brilliantly more than a year later.

I was initially pretty skeptical about Braid, and it took me some time to get past the game's severe melancholy. I eventually found the game's story and the way it plays against the gameplay to be academically interesting, and the game's final payoff is terrific, but it's the ingenuity of the mechanics that makes Braid so engaging.

I like the game, but I'm not gonna buy it at 15 bucks for what's essentially a 4-hour concept demo.

By this point, it's gotten so much good press and so much controversy, they should just cut the price and open the floodgates. That would remove both the "15" complainers like me and the "it's not even that great a game" complainers as well who are only even noticing it because of the fuss.

They'd probably double sales overnight, and then the word of mouth would compound it.

Braid is a great game... it took me about 2 hours to beat.

Now I am going to time trials... which can be slightly more difficult.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy this game.  I've played multiple times and am just barely halfway through.  There's a puzzle piece in world three that I simply cannot figure out.  But I keep going back, knowing that eventually I will get it.  This game is probably short for incredibly smart people, but since I'm of average intelligence, it certainly doesn't seem short.  One more quick thing--there's a lightbulb-over-your-head moment in the first world that left me grinning like a simpleton, and it was a truly unique gaming experience.  I really recommend this game for anyone who is looking for something different and isnt't completely stupid.  It's five dollars more than most games, and easily worth it when you consider the amount of relatively short, relatively crappy games that sell for 60 bucks.  I'm done, sorry for being verbose.  First post--and I'm not really a fanboy.  Laidher.

@Andrew: are you saying you found all the puzzle pieces and finished world 1 in less than 2 hours? because if you did you're my hero.

But you certainly did not. so shut the hell up

Love it,

You know things are screwed up when this game with a tiny budget can be better than half the games with a multi-million dollar budget.

Yes someone made a good point about the length etc, i know many people who are already put off by the 1200 point cost, they wont risk buying it.

which is sad when the game really is outstanding and fresh.

I'm not quite sure why so many people are getting upset about the price of this one compared to the length of game. Last year Assassins Creed came out at $60 and contained only 10 hours of gameplay for most people, so that cost you $6 per hour, but it didn't stop most people buying it.
Braid will last you at least 5 hours IMO  (as long as you don't cheat!) so even at $15, that works out at only $3 per hour, effectively half the cost and none of the repetitiveness ;)

I love this independent game. The artistic style, music, and intelligent game play harken back to the days when video games were of a more simple essence.

I'm still digesting the story. Yes the game is short and expensive. BUT, it's a rewarding game in both gameplay and story. I wish more games made you think like this, and I'm not just talking about the puzzles, but think about the story.

I think it important to point out to people just starting the game that EVERY PUZZLE PIECE CAN BE RETRIEVED AT ANY TIME!  There are no abilities gained later on.  What you have is all you have, so don't pass up any piece thinking you have to go back.

This game can easily be beaten in two hours.. in fact the Full Game Speed Run is to be done in under 45 minutes.

Yes I did beat the game with all of the puzzle pieces... in UNDER two hours....

Yep. "Insanely frustrating" & "giving the TV the finger".  I would've just gave up & gave Braid a 1out of 5 stars instead. Short, frustrating game for $12. Hell with that.

@Andrew

From what I've read online on message boards and blogs, 3-5 hours is pretty consistent for a first playthrough, so "easily beaten in 2" is probably not a very valid statement (unless you're talking about a second time through the game).  Remember, not everyone is as awesome as you clearly are.

I absolutely love Braid. I finished the game last night, with all puzzle pieces found. The entire package is incredibly satisfying, from visuals to story.

$15? Who cares? It's worth a half a tank of gas, without a doubt. It's a fine, fine piece of gaming.

the game reminded me a little of the old Rick Dangerous games....

I have to admit I only play the demo because it's not my kind of game but I have to say the time bending aspect and the collecting puzzle parts gearing towards the final confrontation seemed really interesting...

If one day the game goes on the XBLA Aracde Hits at a discounted price I might pick it up...

I dunno, the price seems just a little too steep for me at this point; maybe some time down the road.  It's a better deal than those lame Stranglehold multiplayer maps, that's for sure.

I think the biggest issue with Braid is that it has a ridiculously steep cost for a short, short game. If the game was a few hours longer it would be worth it but it's 400 points more than GeoWars 2 and BC: Rearmed but with considerably less gameplay to it. I realize Blow wishes to recoup the money he spent on it but I don't see a good reason to shell out $15 for a 6 hour game.
