Ratchet & Clank Review

4
  • PS4

Insomniac reimagines a classic, making it more than a simple movie tie-in.

Remakes and rereleases of classic games have been so numerous in recent years that they’ve become a running joke. Whether it’s an HD shine on Twilight Princess, a remaster of a Resident Evil remake, or one of many trilogies and game collections, the current generation of consoles have no drought of material for those wanting a reason to play old games. Insomniac’s newest offering lies a bit outside of this trend, however. Ratchet & Clank (2016) offers far more than a simple remaster, but also isn’t slavish enough to its film tie-in to make fans of the series feel short-changed. This a fully featured reimagining of the 2002 original, with tweaks and additions that help tie it into the movie. Most importantly, it manages to do this all while feeling like a modern gameplay experience and retaining the chaotic fun the series has been known for all these years.

The improved visuals are especially noticeable during the train chase sequence.
The improved visuals are especially noticeable during the train chase sequence.

If you’ve played the original (or the HD Collection version), you’ll notice the initial similarities. Many of the planets from the original make their return, often in the same order and almost always with the same basic visual style. Despite this, many elements within the stages themselves are different. Layouts are sometimes entirely new, and the placement of collectibles (and number of them) is totally different. Rarely did I explore a level and think “oh yeah, I remember this part.” Rather, it conjured up general memories of planet themes as I blasted my way through these stages.

By far, the most obvious upgrades to the original game come in the form of visuals and the weapon progression system. Insomniac takes full advantage of 14 years of graphical advancements and several installments’ worth of memorable weapons, and the end result is a Ratchet & Clank game that never feels like a simple throwback. Visually, it’s one of the most impressive games on the PlayStation 4. Enemies animate beautifully, the environments are gorgeous, and the action is perfectly chaotic with enemies, bolts, and explosions taking up every inch of the screen’s real estate.

Every enemy has a unique dance animation for the Groovitron, even bosses.
Every enemy has a unique dance animation for the Groovitron, even bosses.

With this entry, Insomniac has created somewhat of a “greatest hits” collection of weapons, featuring many favorites that didn’t initially appear until later in the franchise. More importantly, every weapon in the game features a robust leveling system. Having access to favorites like the Groovitron and the Sheepinator in this entry is great, but being able to forge them (and every other weapon) to your liking is even better. By beating the game and starting its version of a new game plus, you can further level each weapon from a maximum of 5 to a maximum of 10, complete with plenty of new upgrades to purchase. Other bells and whistles have also been added, like cheats and visual filters that unlock as you collect hidden gold bolts.

This reimagining of Ratchet & Clank is successful on every front. If you have kids that were just introduced to these characters thanks to the movie, this serves as one of the most effective movie tie-in games out there. If you’re a longtime fan of the series, this entry will bring back fond memories of the original while introducing new elements and featuring all of the solid visuals and controls you’d expect from an action game in 2016. If you’ve never played the series at all, there couldn’t be a better jumping-on point to introduce you to the characters, weapons, and gameplay of Insomniac’s flagship series. The only downside is that it doesn't do anything in particular to push the franchise forward as a whole, opting instead to act as a sort of "greatest hits" of the series' trademarks. Those looking for the next leap forward for the franchise won't get that here, but I'm plenty happy with it serving as a standalone encapsulation of all of the elements that make Ratchet & Clank great.

Yeah this was my first time properly playing a Ratchet & Clank game and man, what a blast it was. The story telling was kind of a mess but whatever, the whole thing was utterly delightful.

@df-1: Who says he took points off for that? Do you think this is a 5 Star game? I think he's just letting people know what this game is, I don't think he took anything off because of it.

it doesn't do anything in particular to push the franchise forward as a whole

I'm all for brevity in reviews, but this is a cop-out phrase. How would Ratchet & Clank push the franchise forward? New guns? New planets? New characters? More jokes? If the developers deviate too much from the original, there'd be no point in calling this a remake.

I could understand some platforming sections feeling less fun or fair, or the weapon selection consisting of a weaker arsenal than previous entries. But with such a vague sentence, you leave readers guessing (and not for the better).

It's why the "push the franchise forward" clause has earned a spot on my list of lazy cliches, largely when people don't provide an example or two.

he says "the only downside is...." so that must be the only reason he took any points off. Don't really see any other negatives. If he had any other problems with the game he could have said so, but we only see that remark.

I like to think there's someone at Insomniac that really wanted to title this thing "Ratchet and Clank: The Movie: The Game".

@df-1: A game without errors is not always a 5 star. A game can do nothing "wrong" but not be flawless.

This goes back to the argument Jeff has made about his Twilight Princess review. He gave it a 9/10 back in the day even though he didn't like it at all. Dan may have not been insanely hot or loving this game, but didn't find major flaws in it.

Longtime fans should also be aware that this game runs at 30fps rather than the 60fps the games have run at since the OG Ratchet and Clank and up through Crack in Time. It's not make or break, but it does mean that the came doesn't feel quite as tight as you might remember. I'm also surprised Dan didn't mention the oddly wooden in game cut scenes; they're really jarring if your not expecting them.

As a longtime fan myself I completely agree with Dan's assessment and plan on getting the Plat on this game ASAP.

Only Dan can speak to what influenced the star score, but I personally consider that a downside, regardless of the title or what the developers promised. It's fine that you don't, but it isn't unheard of to play the most recent game in a series, re-imagining or not, find that it does nothing to push anything in the series forward, and consider that a downside.

Thats what you're thinking, that is not what he is writing. He didn't say "I had just a mildly good time, all the mechanics work well, but i was entertained only most of the time" all he says is that it doesn't push the formula further, which this title doesn't set out to do, its not priced at $60 either.

Right, only he can, and he chose not to really say why its 4/5 aside from it doesn't further the formula.

this will be my last post on the review. I haven't played the game yet, so I can't judge it for myself.

I played it all Sunday. It's perfect in just about every sense, other than lacking some originality that comes with a reboot of a series that has released about a dozen games of incremental progress.

I'd recommend it to anyone.

The best compliment I can give it is to say I actually use most of the weapons regularly

When I played this game it kind of brought back a lot of memories while also being new and exciting at the same time. Like it certainly played on nostalgia but it wasn't just interested in doing the same fucking thing. It did enough new things that kept me engaged for the duration of my playthrough.

As an aside. I know the movie has a lot of famous hollywood actors in it. Are they in the game? I know that Victor Von Ion is played by Stallone and I am pretty sure that it is him in the game but I cannot tell.

That's not how the GiantBomb review scores work. The score is a measure of how much the reviewer enjoyed playing through the game. It's different from the review text in that it's a subjective measurement whereas the text is a more analytical judgement.

@df-1: That's exactly his point, this was never meant or marketed to be more than a very good remake of the original. The vibes I get from this review is that it's a very good game, but not quite a great game. It would need to dream a bit bigger. It's still tremendously impressive that they pulled off such a good game based on the original Ratchet in 2016, but needs something more to be truly awesome.

As to Skyrim, multiplayer would probably just feel outlandish in that game. However, there are totally ways that game could have been far better if the developers had taken more chances and dreamed bigger. The game was impressive from an immersion standpoint, they combined the graphics of Oblivion with a world that was far more distinctive with dungeons that actually felt somewhat unique. Additionally the way the systems were streamlined made it far easier for people who don't normally play RPG's to jump into the game.

That said, ask any hardcore TES fan who looks at those games critically and he'll tell you what ways it fell short of Morrowind, and he can possibly tell you newer, more innovative ways the game could have moved the genre forward. Off of the back of my head, the way the character customisation was toned down, and the fact that Morrowind just had way more shit crammed into every square inch of land that was also more interesting than Skyrim are two hard knocks to the latter.

Additionally, Dan pointing out that Ratchet doesn't try anything new is a good sign, especially from a guy who claims "Oh I'll play Mario and Zelda for till the day I die!" The end of that line of thinking is where the series becomes Pokemon: literally every game coming out is the same game just improved with more content.

Hmm. I'm not Dan and I don't want to speak for him, but these are my thoughts on the matter.

Dan isn't the developer. It's not his job to think of how to make games better, he just needs to share how he feels about the game. It would be nice if he could give an example of what they could have done with the franchise and I 100% understand it if that seems impossible, but he can't know what they could have done with the franchise because he isn't making the game with their time and budget and bosses, and it isn't his job to think of the games that should be made. The developers make the game, and he looks at it as is. If he would feel that it could have been done better, then it does not matter whether that is true. I think.

And he didn't necessarily dock points for that, in that it would have been a perfect game if it were a little less familiar. If Dan would be unable to name any specific flaw with a game, that doesn't mean that it would be a perfect experience. (You could say that is because a reviewer is not perfect at finding and isolating problems or at separating what makes a good game good from the personal preferences, and the medium of a review is not perfect for exposing all the little things that play into creating the gaming experience. Things do get lost in translation.)

Does calling it a remake excuse it from whatever limitations that come with a remake... That is an interesting discussion to be had because in a way it does. One wouldn't complain about a puzzle game for not having RPG elements. One doesn't complain about an on rail shooter for being on rails... Or don't we? Looking at the incredible production values of this remake I could imagine a little voice in Dan's mind going: "Wa-ha-ha! Waluigi played all of this before!"

That's a very different thing entirely. The point he made isn't that the game lacked a feature (i.e. multiplayer) but rather it's treading the same old ground however it's being done very well. There's nothing wrong with that and the score is still pretty good.

Really having a blast with this one. I miss some of the removed planets and the full-circle plotline (read: starts and ends on Veldin), and I've never cared for Nefarious, but I suppose the changes will probably all tie up well with the upcoming movie.

Also, everyone needs to calm down about the 4-star thing. This is Giant Bomb. A game has to do something really, REALLY special to warrant the perfect score here, and their 4s are pretty solid in my book.

I never got around to Ratchet and Clank in the PS2 days, and then I switched to 360. But I always wanted to check them out, and this game has been a blast playing through.

It's also a wonderful proof that 3D platformers are still all kinds of fun.

Games don't start at 5 and go down from there. There isn't an exact science because reviews are subjective, but a rule of thumb that's closer to reality is they start at 3 and go up or down.

EDIT: Just scrolled up and saw @alex already said basically the same thing.

I don't mind if it's not 5 Stars, 10/10, 100% etc.

But I agree that a game review should at least give -some- sort of reasons as to why. The entire review was glowingly positive, with the only "negative" being what you mentioned. The Last of Us Remastered, Journey, and other remasters of great games don't get knocked at all for being what they are. Looked like a desperate scraping the barrel reason to not give it a 5/5.

Different reviewers have different ways of rating remaster/remake/whatevers. Why do you care so much about 1 star? Read the contents of the review, no need to get butthurt over a rating. Easily the worst thing about the gaming community.

I'm loving it. I've never played through an R&C game from beginning to end before. Just bits here and there. If this is a "greatest hits" installment, and you're like me, you may as well get it. It's pretty fun.

@valeo: Plenty of games have already been made before and had their remaster/remake/whatever rated a 5/5 or equivalent across games media. Your reasoning is invalid.

Different reviewers have different ways of rating remaster/remake/whatevers. Why do you care so much about 1 star? Read the contents of the review, no need to get butthurt over a rating. Easily the worst thing about the gaming community.

It's exhausting. And kind of baffling. Have people really never had a situation where they really had nothing bad to say about a game, but still would say the game was a 4/5? I feel like it happens to me all the time (especially in this current generation).

The score and the review have never really been 100% 1 to 1 (save for maybe outliers on both ends of the spectrum), nor have they ever needed to be.
