Rock Band 4 Review

  • XONE

Rock Band 4 feels more like a maintenance release than a proper relaunch of this once-popular franchise.

You can jump in or out mid-song.
You can jump in or out mid-song.

For people in one of a few specific situations, it's fantastic that Rock Band 4 exists. With a great deal of that old downloadable music carrying over from old Rock Band to new, a Rock Band for current platforms means that Rock Band fanatics can start to think about putting away their old consoles and move forward into the now. Rock Band 4 is fantastic when it comes to the basic task of getting a group of people together in the same room and playing Rock Band. It also has some much-needed support for old instruments, allowing people to get up to date without going out and spending hundreds of dollars on new gear (though the new gear feels better than all of my busted-ass Rock Band 2 hardware). Rock Band 4 lets you play Rock Band. And it has a few new gameplay changes. But if you're looking for an actual sequel to Rock Band 3, you'll almost certainly find RB4 to be an incredibly thin offering that only really feels like a full-fledged product if you happen to like the songs that are included on the disc.

I don't really care for most of the songs included on the disc. I won't reprint every single track here, you can go find that list without much trouble. But of the 60+ songs included, I count eight songs that I'm interested in playing. Obviously, that will be a highly personal number for each and every one of you, but the soundtrack, combined with the limited feature set of Rock Band 4 made me wish that Rock Band 4 was offered in a fashion similar to Dance Central Spotlight, which was a low-priced download that came with 10 tracks. At this point, I already own a lot of Rock Band songs. I didn't especially appreciate having these 60 or so tracks specifically forced onto my library.

That said, the DLC process for Rock Band 4 is anything but smooth. A boatload of songs (over 1700) from the previous generation of Rock Band were made available on launch day, and if you already owned those songs previously, you could redownload them for no additional charge. Assuming you could find them. On the Xbox One, this required me to manually scroll through the entire list in search of songs that said "Purchased" next to them instead of "$1.99." Later I discovered that, for whatever reason, some songs that I already owned weren't showing up as "Purchased," forcing me to guess a bit and click the buy button on some songs to see if it was going to try to charge me or say "oh, hey, you already own this!" For a game with this much content in its marketplace, this process is wholly unacceptable. It's also worth noting that, of the songs that made the jump from old consoles to new, the disc exports of previous Rock Band games aren't on that list. So if the bulk of your add-on music comes from that process, you're not going to find those here. Harmonix appears to be working on bringing additional old music to the new catalog, so hopefully that gets done at some point.

Rock Band 4 looks like Rock Band.
Rock Band 4 looks like Rock Band.

The list of modes and options in Rock Band 4 is thin, though since "Quickplay" seems to be the only mode I've really played over the last several years, this isn't the end of the world. But if you happen to be interested in playing online, you should know that this doesn't let you do that. The character creator and band creation options are reduced and the bombastic video sequences that have peppered other Rock Band games don't appear to be here, either. It has something resembling a career mode and a multi-song show mode for cases where you and your band want to keep going without having to bounce back to the song list after every track, but that's about it. The real changes come in the gameplay itself.

Guitar solos have changed, by default, to freestyle solos. Instead of the charted notes that make up the actual solos in the actual songs you're playing, Rock Band 4 replaces all that with, effectively, whatever you want. The game will synthesize a guitar track based on what you play. It'll keep you on-time and in-key, so even flailing away on your plastic instrument will result in something that is at least technically correct. Playing your own solos is fun, but I ran into a few cases where I hit a note and the game took a beat to catch up and actually make noise (probably in an attempt to keep whatever I was playing on-beat). It left me feeling completely disconnected from the experience. Also, even when you're sticking to the notation that's put in place to tell you which parts of the guitar it wants you to use during each part of the freestyle solo, it sounds kind of lame. The guitar tone often doesn't fit with the rest of the song and the whole thing just feels off too often to work. It's fun to noodle around on the guitar and see what happens, but when push came to shove I ended up disabling the freestyle solos and going back to the old, charted solos.

This dude is probably bummed right about now!
This dude is probably bummed right about now!

Drums have gone the other way by default, replacing freestyle drum fills with charted fills that you use to activate overdrive. Considering that most people can't pull off a proper-sounding drum fill to save their lives, giving them a little guidance is a smart change. However, it suffers from the same problem as the guitar stuff in that the drum sounds used for the fills don't always fit the drum sounds used in the song you're playing. So it sounds like some sampled, electronic drums just start sounding off a the wrong volume when you enter a drum fill. Vocals have a freestyle option, too, letting you sing harmonies instead of robotically sticking to the way the song was recorded. That's a nice change.

Oh, and unlike the previous game, Rock Band 4 doesn't support the mini-keytar peripheral at all. Again, it's one of those things that isn't the end of the world on its own, but the whole package feels like one of those "death by a thousand cuts" situations.

Rock Band 4 doesn't feel like a grand, triumphant return for rhythm games. It feels more like a minimum viable product than the fourth game in a long-running and popular game franchise. If you're looking for a way to play Rock Band on new consoles, this allows that. And not much else. Stack on the storefront issues that make old DLC hard to import, the lackluster sound of the freestyle guitar solos, and a minimal set of options, and the whole package gets a little hard to recommend to anyone other than diehard fans who just want a way to play the game on current machines.

Kinda wish they'd just done a new Rock Band Blitz. That game was all right.

Also it doesn't have online co-op. And that makes at least nine people upset (myself included.)

But really, it's impressive that the (now MTV and EA-less) Harmonix team got anything out the door, much less a game that mostly reintegrates tons of old DLC and systems. At the same time, it's not enough. And the instrument syncing results don't seem as good as they used to be. And the song UI is a complete mess. And, and, and.... *sigh*

As a huge fan of the old games (up to Rock Band 2 and GH: World Tour), these releases have done nothing for me. Which sucks, I wanted to be excited.

The fact that the features have been scaled back, like a Madden game in its first year on a new console, certainly doesn't help matters. I hope a lot of people get a great time out of this at parties, though.

Oh snap, didn't expect 3 stars. Still though when you compare it to what came before, makes total sense. Hard to not feel bummed out when a bunch of stuff is removed for the sequel. I'll still probably pick this up though just for the party game aspect.

As someone who mostly didn't end up playing RB/GH the last time around, the idea of getting this for modern consoles is intriguing, though the cost of entry is a bit high for me. I'm glad this exists though.

I just don't want to have to buy new instruments. I'm alos at point in my life where it's hard to get a bunch of friends together to play Rock Band. I hope it does well, but wouldn't be surprised if it didn't do well.

On the Xbox One, you can hit the options button on the Rock Band 4 icon in Games & Apps and have it download all DLC songs you own. At least that's what I did, and I assume the 40 or so songs it downloaded was all of them. Hard to know how many it should pick up when it's only partially available.

Having heard what Jeff had to say on podcasts (and talking to him about it on a mixlr, whattup Jeff!) I called three stars before the page loaded. It seems like a really fair score for a pretty thin but still fun Rock Band game. I dunno if we could have expected this game to drop and set the world on fire like the old ones did, but I'm glad the plastic instruments are back.

Rock Band 1/2/3 exports ARE coming, so there's that, but man this game is such a step back from Rock Band 3 in every way. If you already have Rock Band 3, unless you really want the new songs offered here or don't want to keep your old console hooked up, I don't really see what this offers.

I was a pretty damn big fan of Rock Band, pre-ordered the Band-in-a-box, and as of this morning have returned the whole thing to Amazon.

For one, the new instruments are broken out of the box because of faulty firmware which is only fixable if you have bluetooth support on a Windows PC, which I do not. Also, character customization was HUGE for me in previous games and the fact that not only is the creator garbage, you couldn't even set your created characters as stand-ins when playing by yourself!

Even if you HAVE working instruments, there also seems to be a lot of weird note-dropping and stuff (my brother and I both experienced it, and it seems others have too) making the game just play worse then RB3. Basically the only thing I'll miss going back to RB3 is The Protomen, since all of the new features are bad/don't work and all the old ones are gutted.

Huh for some reason I thought Jeff would have given this 4 stars despite some of his criticisms. Guitar Hero was some of the most fun I have ever had with gaming and when Rock Band came around I had already lost a bit of my enthusiasm for this specific game. Actually the real issue was more that I didn't have the same circle of friends to play music games with when I finally bought Rock Band as I did when Guitar Hero came out.

And unfortunately I don't have enough friends to make this truly fun, so I'm not buying any more plastic instruments or this game for that matter.

I agree with Jeff - the game is thin on features compared to previous Rock Band games. Life as an independent studio isn't easy.

But Harmonix has said it will support the game with new features every so often (interim patch coming soon and the first title update in December). Hopefully over time the game will begin to realize its full potential. At its core, it's still a gaming experience like no other with an amazing array of songs available.

I bought it, glad to be playing a new Rock Band game - though everything in this review is a fair point. It feels pretty thin. You can't even assign custom characters to be the other members of your band!

I thought I heard somewhere that they're planning on adding new features with title updates this time around? As opposed to making a full-on sequel? If that's the case, they've got... a lot of options to choose from.

I like the freestyle guitar solos more than I thought I would. They seem to sound a little better once you play the game for a while. And it's crazy that they show up in old DLC songs too.

Overall, I'm just really happy it exists.

I think it's still a great purchase for people that totally sidestepped the rockband / guitar hero era and now have a console that's able to create those fun music nights. For everyone else it's a bummer though.

As I've said to friends, Rock Band 4 feels like the framework for a lot of DLC and expansion content over the next few years...almost as if they released the bare minimum they could to keep people playing whilst they work out what to do next. Features are missing for sure, the store issues for both Xbone and PS4 are utterly shameful and the EU and Australia have been even more screwed over on PS4 because of how bad the Playstation Store is...but having taken all these problems into account...would I go back to RB3? No.

The hardware differences and hit registration are damn near perfect now, no more missed notes on the drums or random double hi-hat hits on fast sections. The guitar is damn near silent now so there is no constant 'clack clack clack' from the strum bar and the buttons flow amazingly well.

Overall....software needs some work, but I've no doubt that anything required will come over time in the form of patches or expansion content. Given that the review is for launch however, totally justified in the 3 stars.

There are dozens of us! DOZENS!

And we're all showing up in succession. And we all know each other. Hey guys!

But yeah, a few adjustments, some already covered. There's a bunch more DLC still having their entitlements sorted out eventually, the exports you've already done will be coming eventually, and Rock Band 3 will be exporting eventually, too. (But you'll need a copy of the game and a 360 for that; you may need to enlist a friend.) They've got an... Excel sheet... with rolling updates on what isn't ready for the new library yet. (I could describe the process to claim exports for disc songs in older games if you haven't done those yet, but that'd be longer than the review.) They added harmony vocals to all their old songs, too, because some fans did the work and got folded into the credits.

But yeah, there's a lot of serious minuses with not much in the plus column. If you bought any songs from the Rock Band Network, those aren't slated to come over yet. (They might someday?) Specialty drum kits like the ION Drum Rocker work on PS4, but not XBox One. They may make new ones or come up with another adopter doohickey. Pro Guitar and Bass stuff is gone, too; if you miss it, go play the Rocksmith games. They're good! If you care about scores, the only way to get them save is in Quickplay because all the other modes carry your Overdrive power between songs. Also you can't play more than one song in Quickplay at a time before unloading the venue stuff and going back to the library. (Right now.)

Rock Band 4 is definitely a video game, and 3/5 is the right score.

  • If you have Rock Band 3 set up and ready to play right now, hang back and wait for the library stuff and feature list to get sorted in a few weeks or months. (Or years?) Keep an eye on it, though. They're gonna keep adding stuff back over time, so holler (nicely) at Harmonix and take one of their now-constant surveys to nudge them about what you want. (Like online co-op play!)
  • If you don't have a way to play Rock Band right now because you already chucked your last-gen system, this'll do just fine and it'll get better over time.
  • If you've never played any of these games before, holy crap go get this.

I think the 'band vote' option added to the Play A Show multiplayer is really smart. You don't get dumped into a list of 100s of tracks and ask 4 people to agree on 1. The offered options will often be things people won't have chosen themselves, but still end up being fun.

There are some disappointing omissions, but some good innovations as well. Looking forward to the December feature patch.

I'm guessing (if that was considered) there's some licensing BS that would make that difficult to do. Or it wouldn't have been very feasible, or both! I'm just betting it has to do with song licensing though.

So with the new Rock Band and Guitar Hero announcements, I've been thinking about picking up one of these games again. I'm still doubting whether this is a good idea. That said, Rock Band 4 doesn't sound like the game for me. I abandoned Xbox (the 360 was basically my Guitar Hero/Rock Band machine), so if I were to get it, it would have to be on the PS4. So I would need to:

  1. Buy Rock Band 4 guitar bundle for $130
  2. Look at the setlist and realize there's only 5 to 10 songs that make me super excited
  3. Spend probably another $100 to buy most of the DLC I want

I guess that's the problem with importing all of those DLC songs. It feels like the songs you would normally go for a game like this were already in a previous Rock Band game or is DLC. Everybody has their own tastes, but it feels like this game has the weaker GH/RB setlists.

And only 60 songs on the disc? Most of the GH and RB games had like 80 to 85 songs. There were some games like Guitar Hero Metallica that had fewer, but that was a pretty awesome setlist (if you were into metal and Metallica of course) so it didn't matter as much.

So yeah, I don't know if I'll take up plastic guitar games again, but I doubt I will buy Rock Band 4.

@gaspar: I'll continue to wait. I was considering picking up an XBO instead of a PS4 just because of my RB library but having to download each song individually sounds like too much of a pain right now, especially on top of a pretty thin feature list as it is as well as a song list that is probably the weakest in any mainline RB/GH game.

I'm so happy this game exists and I'm looking forward to the future updates and DLC. Like the review says, though, it's hard to recommend it to anyone who didn't get fully invested in the DLC and instruments on the older consoles. The lack of features seen in previous Rock Band games (online, practice, etc.), while I didn't use them too often, is pretty sucky for those that used those features on a daily basis.

That being said....I pre-ordered the digital copy on Xbox to get those bonus songs, I ordered the legacy adapter on Amazon and paid extra to get it shipped early, I went through the tedious process of looking through the Xbox store for all my DLC, I searched eBay and Craigslist for some old wireless Guitar Hero guitars since my old guitars were wired, and I sang the hell outta "Light Up the Night" on release day.

I have this preordered (the Xbox One version with the legacy adapter is the only one that hasn't come out yet...), and reading about all these issues makes me reconsider if I want this, or if I should just keep my 360 hooked up.

Maybe I'll just get the adapter, so I can have it down the line.

Wow I had no idea that the process for re-downloading the DLC songs that you had already purchased was that tedious. Having to scroll through a 1700 item list without being able to sort or filter the songs you bought to the top of the list, or even better just adding a button to re-download all the tracks you own, is INSANE. How could they possibly overlook something so incredibly simple and essential to playing the game!?

Simply not enough content to warrant the price of purchase, and some of the younger demographics more willing to buy into a new Rock Band, of whom find this all new and exciting, won't catch it without the massive marketing pull absent along with the publisher to fund it.

Would have been far more enticing if all the DLC was added into the package for free, for everybody, and they built the game off an expansive catalog of musical history, touring through the eras, etc etc, to add some actual offerings beyond superficial elements. You know, content? Unfortunately you can't exactly do that without enraging every single past DLC purchaser and your core fanbase. A Rock Band and a hard place.

I'm aware of all these real stripped back and like back-to-2007-styled basics this game's gonna offer, and I'm probably not even that big of a fan of the songlist too, but I'm still gonna buy it one of these days anyway. I'm just that much of an imbecile for new Rock Band stuff, and as long as if the core element's are there (drummin and singin) then that's good enough for me. Hope they do update it more as time goes on, though. I don't know what limits you can have with that, but like seeing new stuff and added material to make the game deeper would be nice.

The freestyle harmonies alone make this game worth it for me. Even with the absence of keytar.

But, if they don't find a way to export the songs from Rock Band 3 to this game, I might have to go back to that. There's a lot of fun songs on that disc.

Would have been impossible for them to port Rock Band 3 over to new consoles rather than do this?

Apparently the RB3 codebase is owned by their old publisher, meaning that it can't be used. I guess this is why RB4 is so feature-light - they had to start again from scratch.

I keep swinging back and forth on my feelings for the game. I Love Rock Band, but there's so much about this game that feels kinda unfinished. I absolutely despise the freestyle solos and having it constantly revert back to them without a TURN THIS SHIT OFF FOREVER option frustrates me to no end.

The on-disc songs are a joke. They are the absolute worst in a lot of cases with that Dream Genie song being one the least fun things to play/listen to I have ever encountered.

I remember hearing that the career mode is almost like an RPG at one point. I'm still trying to find the RPG stuff... Maybe I'm missing a patch or something.
