Soulcalibur IV Review

3
  • X360
  • PS3

Soulcalibur IV's sharp fighting is offset by a dull set of single-player modes and lame guest characters.

Soulcalibur IV has a lot going for it. It looks great, for one. It plays pretty well, for another. But at the same time, most aspects of the game totally turn me off. Whether it's the "story" mode that consists of bad endings and weak opening text, or the way the item statistics always seem to conspire to make your characters look ugly when you customize them, every positive moment I had with the game seemed like it was immediately countered by something that made me just want to stop playing it entirely. If all you're looking for is fighting in the Soulcalibur style, you'll be satisfied. But the complete package feels a little weird.

These dudes are so totally fighting.
These dudes are so totally fighting.
The fighting sticks to what you'd expect from the series, even if you're like me and haven't really followed the series terribly closely since it was on the Dreamcast. It's a weapon-based game that, for the most part, focuses on clashing weapons, rather than supernatural attacks. This makes the game flow at a different pace than most other 3D fighting games, as Soulcalibur puts a greater emphasis on parrying and countering incoming attacks to create openings. Since the different fighters all bring different stuff to the battle, this gives everyone a different speed or range that you have to constantly consider while playing. On its own, it's pretty good. Enhancements to the series this time around include the critical finish, a fight-ending move that can only be performed under very specific circumstances.

The roster in Soulcalibur IV is already pretty deep, with over 30 characters to choose from. But Namco Bandai decided to revive with the whole "guest character" concept from Soulcalibur II. So the 360 version gets Yoda, the PS3 version gets Darth Vader, and both games get The Apprentice, who will be the main character in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed later this year. Much like Heihachi, Link, and Spawn before them, the characters aren't a great fit with rest of the SC lineup. Everyone's going to have his or her own opinion on this stuff, and here's mine: the inclusion of a bunch of gimmicky Star Wars characters cheapens the entire game and comes across as a desperate attempt to get people excited about a game they would otherwise skip. Of course, the fact that you can't even have Yoda battle Darth Vader means that even this attempt at spiking interest in the series comes off as half-assed. Yoda's height makes him especially lame--he's effectively the Gon or Dr. Bosconovitch of the Soulcalibur universe.

Like previous games in the series, you can create custom characters or edit the outfits of existing fighters. The custom characters need to be assigned to an entire moveset, though, and the weapon comes with the moveset. So underneath the pirate hat and pigtails, you're still just making a different-looking Siegfried or Taki. The way you customize your character effects that character's stats in certain modes, also. This has the side effect of making pretty ugly-looking characters in an attempt to get the stats you're looking for.

It's like combining Gon and Dr. Bosconovitch into one totally uninteresting package!
It's like combining Gon and Dr. Bosconovitch into one totally uninteresting package!
The stats and abilities you can slap on your created characters can make them pretty interesting. You may have to sacrifice a large amount of your offensive or defensive potential to get some of the higher-level abilities, though. You can find varying levels of many abilities, like Nullify Ring Out, which makes it tough to get knocked out of the ring, or Venom Fang, which poisons your opponent when you hit and drains life until they hit you back.

Online, you can get into a match that either uses the different equipment stats or a standard fight that ignores them. It seems to work just fine most of the time, and the only real issue I could see there is that the game doesn't seem like it's taking your online statistics into account when matching you up. I kept getting into fights with players with much higher rankings than mine, which might be frustrating if you're hoping to find evenly matched opposition.

The characters look terrific from a technical perspective. The models are nicely detailed and the animation looks great. A lot of the characters feel a liitle over-accessorized, and being able to slap on all kinds of weird hats and pauldrons in the edit mode doesn't really help. You can strip them down a bit, but considering that Ivy already looks sort of weird with her freakishly large and barely covered boobs, maybe it's best to just leave them as-is.

Overall, it's sort of hard to recommend Soulcalibur IV to anyone who isn't already a big fan of the series. It felt like everything I liked about the game (the actual fighting) was countered by something else (the meaningless story mode, equipment stats, Ivy's creepy-looking boobs) that made me want to take the disc out and put it away forever.

It's a given, really. While SC4 is technically a good game, there's nothing that really makes it stand out as a must-buy unless you're a fan, which can sadly also be said of about 99.9% of fighting game sequels. You're either fan enough to grin and bear it, or you just don't really give a damn.

I really like the game, but yes it has become uneccessarily silly and many of the singplayer modes do suck. I wish they'll make it more like Soul Blade for the PS1 next time and get rid of the clones and balancing issues.

Got to heavily disagree Jeff with this review, yeah the SW characters are a little lame but the rest is fine and I like the extra characters a lot. Also can someone tell me why everyone is gettiing all upset about the boob thing? Ninja Gaiden 2 had it and you all just laughed about it in your bombcast. Yet to be fair you only really see the breast thing in one or two of the characters and everyone suddenly starts getting upset.

I'm throughally enjoying the game, got great customization and the game modes are fun. So I think this is the first time I have to disagree with you! I think I'm the only one, everyone else seems to agree with everything you say mate.

I don't understand the problem with boobs. If you like flat chested women, you can make them. Or you can play as Talim. (Or Voldo)

Besides, the boobs are not that large compared to other anime.

I bought, but the stereotypical online gamers quickly ruined it for me, so it's going back. (Kids, me hitting you with the same move over and over doesn't mean I suck, you LETTING me hit you with that same move over and over means YOU suck)  It did at least help reinforce why, exactly, I don't play online games except with friends I know once or twice every few weeks.

I completely agree with you Jeff. The game is a solid fighter, but it just lacks everything else. I'm really pissed that I bought it. It's just a waste of my money.

It seems i am also for the full 100% behind Jeff. Played soul calibur on the dreamcast, and at the time it was really nice cause of  the fact i could play it with a lot of friends who didn't necessarily needed to know anything, but to still have these same basics without any new rabits coming out of the hat, makes it seems dull...
anyway, i waited with buying this game until the giant bomb review , and the review speaks for itself.

Thanks Giant Bomb :)

I bought the game because I haven't really gotten into a SC game since the original on the Dreamcast, which I enjoyed immensely.
I loved the fighting system and it seems they have finally recaptured the magic of the original game at least as far as the fighting system goes.

As far as the Star Wars characters in the game go, I feel the same as I am sure I will with MK vs DC... Gimmicky and really unnecessary.
At least in SC IV there are only 2 gimmicky characters (for now) in each version of the game, and the regular characters more than make up for the "crap".

As for Ivy, What the hell happened?
My theory is this: apparently cosmetic surgery has been invented somewhere in the storyline and she has either low self esteem, or a lucrative side job. She was nowhere's near that huge in the first SC. (not that I have anything against big boobs, but in this case it does not make sense.)
Or perhaps she uh... "upgraded their weight" to act as counter weights for her attacks enabling her to use inertia in her favor and dish out more damage... yeah that's it

Sound review as always Jeff. I share the same sentiments with the inclusive of the Star War characters, they just seem out of place for me. But in all, it is a sound fighting game and one of the best fighting games for online. Although, the ranking matching system is kind of broken and need to be rectified asap. I had several matches where I was matched up against levels 10 times higher than me and in rare cases  50 times higher. How could they overlooked that? Good review buddy..

I don't understand why it's so difficult to have a decent story mode in a fighting game.  That's my biggest annoyance with the genre as a whole.  If I'm going to invest the time in beating the game with every character (and sadly, I would, too), I'd at least like to be entertained the entire way through.  Cheap production values and half-assed endings aren't cutting it for me.  I want to know where the characters are coming from, what their relationships are to each other, and where they're going or what the consequences of these battles have been - and preferably it won't be some goofy, lame Japanese attempt at humor and cutesy-ness.  Give every character skippable cutscenes between the battles.  Let them interact with the player.  Ten years ago, these kind of weaker stories might have been acceptable given the tech, but now?  Please.

I'm having a good time with it so far. Online is a bit frustrating, but the rest is just as I remember. I like the new designs on some characters...Tira is especially cool. Hilde is such an amazing addition. The lance/short sword combo is really different. She kind of has this FFTactics look about her that I like.  Had one of the best nights of multiplayer I can remember playing with my brother and girlfriend with create a character mode. I tend to agree with a lot of the criticisms people have, but they don't bother me as much as other people. I've always liked it when fighting games let you unlock a ton of stuff...even if it was stupid stuff, TekkenDR and MK Armageddon come to mind, it just adds so much to the longevity of the single player.

Just a little question from me, why does Giant Bomb Always use Xbox 360 Boxart to show? Why never PS3? Or maybe neutral Boxart that doesnt show PS3 or 360, I know it wouldnt work in this case because its different boxarts. Its just a little annoying, I know you guys like the 360 more but still, show PS3 sometimes

Personally I'd prefer that users crop out platform titling from the main image of games that are multiplatform. What that top right area shows is totally up to you guys, not us. You have the tools to change it.

Example of cropped boxart on Indy

I think its one of the better fighters out there right now. Its no so hardcore like VF5 that it will turn off more than bring in, And its more enjoyable than DoA4. While I do agree to a certain extent I think that Soul Cal 4 is among the top tier games this year

this issue threw me for a loop at first too, till i realized it doesn't attempt to match levels, it only attempts to matchup on the basis of your win ratio. however if you host the session the propensity is for lower level opponents to join you, which is odd. (nifty trick for power leveling if you havent gotten hero king yet tho).

i think thats a little harsh. You don't have to do the customizing crap (and it is crap, he was right about that) and the way i see it you can either have soul caliber 4 or you can have soul caliber with yoda. who wouldnt take the extra charecter? i still would rather have a new original thought. Story mode does suck and makes very little sense. BUT i would rather play four then go back to scII.

The 2nd was a great game, even though it was way too similar to the first...but it was great to get more people into the game since it was released on several platforms. Now, Sc3 e Sc4 didn't bring much more to the series and as Jeff said (great review btw): "everything I liked about the game (the actual fighting) was countered by something else"
It's a shame considering games like tekken and virtua fighter are getting better with each release...

I agree with Jeff most of the time... BUT NOT TODAY!!!!

The deepest, most fun-to-play fighting mechanic ever made, AND HUGE BOOBS!!!

BOOOOOOBS!!!!! BOOBOOORINOS!!! BOOBOOOLICIOUS!!! BOOBOOOTRONIC!!!!

Granted, this is the weakest encarnation of the single player modes, with a laughable story mode and "iffy" equiment stats... (the latter could be fixed easily in future updates/DLC packages)

I think next time they should give these games to someone who actually LIKES the Soul Calibur Series... But sadly, I don't think anybody at Giant Bomb qualifies yet... Anyway,  Jeff's viepoint is totally valid...

even if he's a big fat poo-poo head...

LOL

I respect your opinion about the game jeff, but the fact that there are star wars characters playable in the game shouldn't take away from the game at all if you aren't a star wars fan. (which you obviously aren't). If you don't like the 3 characters than don't play them. I do understand that yoda was a bad choice on technical merit however but thats a different story.

Anyway.. opinions will differ greatly here.. which is normal but that's mine anyway.

I really wonder how many of you people on this forum talking shit really don't like the game or are so stupid that you can't make a choice on your own on whether or not this is a good game worthy of a purchase. Of course the story mode is going to be lame, it's a fighting game! The fact is, nobody cares about the character models and their freakishly large extremities. All I care about is fun gameplay, and to that Soul Calibur IV delivers. Stop being a Giant Bomb fanboy and just play the damn game and enjoy it. It is a really fun fighting game, especially for the online competition. If you don't like the fact that Yoda or Darth Vader are in the game, or the fact that they are not both included on each platform then don't use them!

I thought the video review was great, good job Vinny and Jeff.

May I suggest some kind of spoof video where you have the most oddly dressed SCIV character with the GB team's faces planted on making strange noises towards each other (Vinny shouting kamehameha xD)!

I've been around SC since part one and not once have I ever thought of putting this game down. But seeing as how they would put anything into this game for the money makes me frown inside.

They could have handled new content for this game better than what they put out.
