Star Fox Zero Review

2
  • WiiU

It's the Star Fox game you wanted...in 2002.

For almost two decades, Nintendo has been offering up Star Fox entries that vary significantly from the on-rails nature of the first two titles. As a fan of the originals, it’s been difficult to maintain my enthusiasm for new Star Fox announcements considering that the series has been so scattershot in format for so long. After wading through the Zelda-like gameplay of Adventures, the tank and on-foot sections of Assault, and the lack of traditional stages in Command, I almost lost hope in ever seeing a true follow-up to Star Fox 64. Now that Star Fox Zero is here and it seems remarkably similar to the 1997 classic, it leaves me wondering if it’s too little, too late.

Looking at the GamePad rarely gives you an advantage against bosses.
Looking at the GamePad rarely gives you an advantage against bosses.

Despite Star Fox Zero's resemblance to Star Fox 64 in terms of visual style and stage format/progression, my initial concerns centered on control. In most of its pre-release messaging, Nintendo insisted that the cockpit view on the GamePad is a notable improvement to the traditional gameplay. Despite hearing this PR bullet point consistently whenever this game was mentioned, I was left unimpressed with what I saw of it at E3 last year. I hoped that the final release would showcase the reasons why it would allow for more precise aiming, but it never became apparent. Having a cockpit view on the GamePad and a third-person camera on the TV seems not just unnecessary, but confusing at times. This is supposedly for situations in which you’re locking onto (and circling around) an enemy on the big screen, while still technically able to aim at other enemies in first-person on the GamePad. These situations almost never come up, and when they do, it feels distracting and disjointed to look up and down between the two screens.

While the GamePad functionality leaves a lot to be desired, it can be almost entirely ignored in most situations. I’d recommend setting the controls to “Motion Control only when pressing ZR,” and focusing on the main screen only. By doing that, it feels like a traditional Star Fox experience outside of the few times it requires you to look down (when controlling a little robot in an effort to hack a panel, for instance).

Like the tank and submarine sections in 64, Zero sometimes takes you out of the Arwing and in control of various other vehicles. The tank is back, and a gyrocopter, buggy, and chicken-like walker are introduced as alternative modes of transportation. They add a bit of variety to the campaign, but none of the stages that feature them are particularly memorable (unlike the great runaway train stage in 64 that forces you into the tank).

The
The "hacking" sequences are less than thrilling.

Star Fox Zero’s larger issue is that even though the format and gameplay are so similar to Star Fox 64, it feels like the time for this type of game has come and gone. If this had been released for the GameCube instead of Star Fox Adventures, I assume that it would have been almost universally praised by fans of the series. Virtually every element of the 64 entry is intact here. The campaign is largely Arwing-focused and features branching paths and secret exits until the final confrontation with Andross. Completionists can return to levels to collect all of the medals and try to beat their best kill score. Voice actors for the entire team return, and the dialogue features plenty of callbacks for nostalgic fans.

All of this would have been welcome in the early 2000s, but the years of disappointing follow-ups and the overall progression of industry standards leads to Star Fox Zero having the impact of an HD rerelease rather than a full sequel. Being able to beat the game in 2-3 hours doesn't help, no matter how many branching paths or lackluster challenge missions are included. Even the moment-to-moment action doesn't have anywhere near the impact that it had almost two decades ago, as this limited style of gameplay feels dated in 2016. Nintendo finally released the Star Fox game that I thought I wanted, but it leaves me wondering what place Fox McCloud has in today’s gaming landscape.

I'm sure the comments section to this review will be calm, tame, understanding and reasonable.

Also, if you want a good Star Fox game, play Sin and Punishment 2 because that game is awesome.

While this seems expected after his initial thoughts on last week's bombcast, I'm curious about his thoughts on Star Fox Guard, which I assume would be packed in with review copies.

Almost sounds like you'd be better off with the Star Fox 64 3D remake, at least it'd be cheaper. Huge bummer for anyone hoping to find at least one more first-party game for their Wii U before Nintendo forgets about it. All hopes are on Zelda once again. (And Pikmin 4. That's still a thing, right? Not NX exclusive?)

I still maintain that Star Fox Command is the shit, even without the corridor chase stages that made Star Fox distinctive.

I've said it elsewhere, but Star Fox 64 + the narrative structure of the Zero Escape games would be an excellent way to make the repetition really worth it.

I really liked Star Fox and 64, even appreciated Adventures as a huge Rare fanboy back in the day, but the series just hasn't found a way to stay relevant. I like the characters and structure but they always go for something weird with the gameplay that screws it all up.

"Crazy people" is probably the wrong terminology. I mean I certainly expect a healthy share of reactions to any review of a first-party release. I mean there were people in the Ratchet and Clank comments section really upset the game didn't receive a 5.

More, this just seems like it's going to be a pretty polarizing game. I still might give it a shot at some point, though not at full price. Gamerankings/Metacritic seem to be settling on something around a 70% on average. That includes games like Lords of the Fallen and the Sherlock Holmes games (many of which I enjoy!).

Why wasn't this game compared to Metal Gear Solid? I can't consider this a canon Ryckert Review without that comparison.

Also less silly and more on topic: I still want Star Fox 64 part two in 2016. Even after Nintendo pooped on me and Star Fox, for years, I keep hoping something will be the follow up to that game that I want. Not Panzer Dragoon, Not Rez, and not nothing no way no how has ever been what I was looking for in a follow up to Star Fox 64.

I never stopped wanting it the second I finished Star Fox 64. Even with junk gimmick motion controls tacked in, I'm super into this, very excited to play it. Even if this is a lesser follow up to Star Fox 64, I'm in. I want that. Every other website is rolling in sixes and sevens, not surprising me a bit. I'm enthusiastic for this thing to just be decent enough to give me something closer to a real Star Fox game than Adventure or Assault.

From reading the review it isn't clear if this is a follow up, reboot, or a remake I'm a little confused about that and not really disappointed it wasn't compared to Metal Gear Solid, I just thought that would be a silly thing to poke at Dan with.

Was thinking about getting either this or Ratchet & Clank... probably Ratchet then for me.

What I didn't like in Dan's review is the "Re-release"-remark. I mean it helps the reader a lot to understand in what way Dan was underwhelmed with this game, but he didn't hold a "re-release" against a God of War, which would then mean to that if this was a Star Fox 64, it might have been 3 or 4 stars... which I'd call ... "odd"?

On the other I wouldn't know either how to score stuff like re-masters, hd re-releases, annual iterative franchises and giant game collections either. Easy to put it words, hard to a score on.

Bummer. I'm in the unique position of having very little connection to the series, but also having recently acquired a Wii U.

I wonder how this will treat people who have no baggage regarding the previous entries and don't care one whit about about amiibos?

They've said this time and time again, but the 5 star rating scale does not translate straight across to Metacritic's 100 point scale. a 2/5 is not a 40% despite that being what Metacritic does with Giant Bomb's review scores.

2/5 is "This game's problems outweigh its good qualities" and that's it.

I was going to buy Star Fox... Then Dan said it was 2-3 hours long. How in the hell can you make a game in 2016 that isn't atleast 8 hours long? Well, I guess I'll wait for it to be dirt cheap in a year to play it! Dammit Nintendo! This should be a slam dunk! All you needed to do was make the game longer and the Arwing faster!

I enjoyed Star Fox 64 a lot when it first came out. The fact it was short or anything else didn't bother me, because I treated it like an arcade game. Arcade games aren't supposed to last 4+ hours for each play through. I basically wanted an experience like that. But alas, it doesn't sound like this is another great one of those, and continues the Star Fox tradition in saying, "I don't know, what if you turned into a chicken and you did stuff that wasn't just flying around shooting stuff?"

Hmm. I'm very happy to read that the dual screen/motion controls angle of this thing can be ignored, and I think that I'm okay with another Star Fox 64, so I'll probably pick this up. That said, I want so much more from this franchise. Nintendo has this strange array of iconic characters that are also bounty hunters and/or mercenaries (Star Fox, Samus, Captain Falcon, maybe more) but none of their games play to that. If ever there was a franchise to open up and branch out and really embrace such a thing, it should be Star Fox, and it could be amazing.

I'm still interested in giving this game a shot at some point, but it's out of morbid curiosity more than anything else. The part where it's 2-3 hours isn't super comforting. The repeatable score-attack style of Star Fox 64 doesn't really fly as a full-priced retail game the same way it did in 1997.

I think over the last 20 years since Starfox 64, fans of the series have built up both the plot & characters into something entirely different from what the games themselves actually were.

From the reactions I've seen on social media & the constant screenshots of a 20 second trailer, people are more hyped about the 30 minute OVA they're showing on the 20th then this actual game.

Honestly, Star Fox Zero just being an HD version of Star Fox 64 is all I want. All I've ever wanted from Star Fox was a bigger version of 64, so this really sounds like it'll be right up my alley. Despite the negativity I keep seeing thrown at this game, I cannot wait to play it.

@ez123: I think the point is that even if you want to reduce it to a blunt percentage rating, this would still be inaccurate. 2/5 stars on a site that has no concept of "half-stars" or the like means that a clearer representation would actually be a range, starting at the lowest possible translation and working up. 1 star = 0 - 20%; 2 stars = 21 - 40% and so on. In other words, "forty percent" might be an inaccurate summation of Dan's feelings on SFZ, he might think it's actually a much shittier 2 star game.

But then, Metacritic is stupid so this doesn't really matter. 2 stars means it's bad shit outweighs the good. End of.

Good review, Dan. Even if it was disappointing. Glad I never had any attachment to Mr. McCloud beyond how cool he is in Smash Bros.
