Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction Review

4
  • X360

Conviction modernizes Splinter Cell's stealth-action formula in a lot of ways, and it's partnered with a quality story that makes playing it worth your while.

Forget darkness, these sonar goggles let you see enemies through walls.
Forget darkness, these sonar goggles let you see enemies through walls.
There are no night-vision goggles in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction. Sam Fisher, the franchise's star, doesn't need them anymore, because Conviction modernizes its long-running stealth-action formulas in ways that make the game appeal to people who--like myself--have never quite been able to wring much enjoyment out of the previous entries in the series. While I'd guess that stalwart Splinter Cell fans might find this new approach to be a bit more simplified and straightforward than they're used to, the end result is a very modern-feeling game that falls more in line with other stealth-optional action games than with its own legacy.

The story finds Sam Fisher out of the professional espionage game. His daughter is dead and he's got no reason to go on other than finding revenge. As he tracks down someone he suspects is associated with Sarah Fisher's demise, Sam is quickly roped back into Third Echelon's business. It seems that since his time there, the agency has fallen under the leadership of some extremely conniving individuals, who are scheming to do some very bad stuff on American soil. Under the promise of learning more about his daughter, Fisher sets out on a new mission. With its heavy focus on a former agent going up against his old colleagues and the civilian look that Fisher sports throughout the game, Conviction feels more like something out of the Jason Bourne playbook than a Splinter Cell game. Swap out Fisher's family-related rage for Matt Damon's identity-seeking Bourne and Anna "Grim" Grimsdóttír for Joan Allen's Pamela Landy and you'd hardly notice the difference.

Comparisons aside, the story of Splinter Cell: Conviction is more than enough to keep you moving through the adventure, which will probably take most players somewhere around seven hours to complete. The twists are, ultimately, pretty predictable, but most of the performances are solid and the environments you're sent through, which range from government buildings to Gulf War flashbacks, have a nice variety to them. Throughout the entire game, though, your goal is to get from point A to point B, and the game usually doesn't care about how you get there. If you're sneaky enough to creep around your opposition, that's fine. In fact, there are a couple of spots in the game where detection leads to a failure and restart. But for the most part, this game is about Sam Fisher hiding behind cover, popping out to shoot a bad guy or two in the face with a silenced pistol, then creeping to another spot of cover to do it again. When you're spotted, the enemies head in your direction, and the game uses a cool "last known position" system to show an outline of where the enemies think you are. This lets you set up situations where you flank around to the side, giving you clear shots while the dopes head right for where they last saw you, rather than assuming that you'd continue to be on the move and behaving a little more carefully.

Objectives are projected onto the environment, which is a pretty neat little trick.
Objectives are projected onto the environment, which is a pretty neat little trick.
There's also a powerful "mark and execute" system, which is a sort of supermove that lets you tag a handful of enemies (the number increases with certain weapons and by buying some upgrades) and automatically shoot them all, one right after the other. To prevent this from breaking the game, you can only perform the execution move after you've killed one guy via a melee attack. Also, you can only store up one execute at a time, so melee killing an entire room doesn't let you cruise through the rest of the level on auto-pilot. Obviously, from a balance perspective, there needs to be some kind of limit on how frequently you can automatically bag a room full of bad guys. But from the "reality" side of things, having to melee kill someone first doesn't really make any sense. Perhaps Fisher can only pull off multiple headshots after he's tasted the blood of his victims? Whatever. It's not the end of the world, but the game takes itself pretty seriously from start to finish, so this weird requirement sort of stands out as pretty silly.

By the end of the game, you'll have acquired quite an arsenal of EMP grenades, remote cameras, an assortment of fully automatic rifles, and so on. But most of it feels unnecessary. While you can go through guns blazing, careful use of a silenced pistol remains the most accurate and effective way to move through the game. Most of the submachine guns and assault rifles feel wildly inaccurate by comparison, so there's really no need to employ them except in the rare couple of cases where a room you're in gets flooded by alert enemy soldiers. For the most part, Fisher's weapon collection feels slightly more effective on the multiplayer side of things.

The same weapon selection you have in the single-player game, and whatever upgrades you've purchased for those weapons, carries over to the other modes. These are the multiplayer modes, where a total of two players can go through a quick cooperative campaign, complete with its own story and agents. These agents also factor into the other modes, which have you protect an area from waves of enemies, work your way through the map to hunt down AI enemies, or go up against one another in "face-off" mode. This is a big departure from the multiplayer found in the last Splinter Cell game, but it's nice because it sticks to the series' strengths and uses the same mechanics that also work in the single-player. You can also play some of the modes by yourself, and there's an offline split-screen mode that you can use for multiplayer, if you like.

The game's twists keep you wondering who you're really working for right up to the end.
The game's twists keep you wondering who you're really working for right up to the end.
Visually, Splinter Cell: Conviction usually looks pretty nice. You'll catch the occasional rough texture here and there, and some of the transitions between animations don't line up quite right on a few of the melee kills. But things like running and sliding into cover, or hanging upside-down from a pipe while shooting at your opponents look pretty cool. Most of the voice cast is decent, but the enemies sound like idiots when they're looking for you, with some of them repeating the same or extremely similar lines of dialogue while sniffing you out. Sam Fisher himself, once again voiced by Michael Ironside, often sounds a little off. While some of that makes storyline sense--Fisher's meant to be a few years out of the game and mentally unstable due to the loss of his daughter, after all--some of his lines come off a little slurred, like someone was stashing a little wine in the voiceover booth.

Splinter Cell: Conviction is the most accessible Splinter Cell game yet. It gives you the firepower to shoot your way out of your mistakes, but also makes the stealth side of things fun, rewarding, and significantly easier than just attempting to run around and shoot. Its only serious issue is that it doesn't feel especially substantial or replayable. The multiplayer is a nice touch, but most players will probably see all of the content once and find little reason to return.

MGS4 and now this...stealth gameplay totally sucks so I'm glad it's being reduced severely in these series that have neat ideas.

The gray-scale was the deal breaker... although I would've suffered through it if 'Spies versus Mercenaries' returned.

I disagree with some elements of this review...In my opinion this game did not deserve the ratings it received.  The biggest gripe I have about this installation of the Splinter Cell franchise is all the damn spoon feeding it does.  The whole concept of the huge text being projected on objects with the mission objectives was so distracting from the immersion of the game that I felt I was being guided through the entire game.  Also the videos that where displayed on walls, which were trying to show what Sam was seeing in his mind, totally failed as some of the scenes displayed were future events.  Just the whole projection of video and text was poorly implemented.  About the only elements that I enjoyed in this installation where the new mark and execute feature, the story, and voice acting.   Okay and maybe the choreographed fight scenes.    As for the iconic fundamentals of the franchise that were missing from this title, that did not bug me as much as it did some.   I actually think that if the Ubisoft team had of stuck to the original vision of Conviction, see original screenshots on Gamespot.com, that the game would have been a bigger success.   This may be the last Splinter Cell I ever play, depending on what they do with the next instalment.

Just beat this a couple of days ago. The co-op is super addictive and fun, but after going through and beating a lot of it on Realism, I don't have too much reason to go back. Looking forward to the DLC!

"Perhaps Fisher can only pull off multiple headshots after he's tasted the blood of his victims?"

:)  Maybe he has to skull fuck one of them first to get his blood flowing?

And let's stop this negative talk of Ironside. The man is a legend. He might be high on the sauce & slurry, but He can do no wrong!  He's right up there with Robert Culp.  Bottomline: his shit don't stink. It's scientifically impossible, like going faster than the speed of light. It's not his fault if the recording studio staff fucked up on recording his greatness, or maybe they should have quadrupled his pay if they expected a serious tone?

I've never cared for stealthy games like SC or Metal Gear.  I think this one is pretty great though...there's quite a bit of stealth to it, but you feel like a badass while doing it.  As has been said numerous times, they could've titled this "Jason Bourne" and it would've fit perfectly - I think they should've, so SC fans didn't feel like this great game ruined the franchise.  Enjoy it for what it is!

I'd recommend a rental, given the length, but I'll probably buy it just to support the developer.  Really liking it, hope for more! :O)

I hate how most game developers now are toning down they're games for the masses...of retards. Dude Splinter Cell Conviction is a really fun game, but you have to try really hard to get it to feel like Splinter Cell. Maybe the reason Jeff didnt like the older splinter cell games, was because he didn't want a game where you actually had to be patient and use stradegy. Stradegy you say! Whoa!!!

It's too far removed from the Splinter Cell I know.  The lack of Sam Fisher's trademark night vision goggles are just the last nail in the coffin.  Thanks for a long wait to nothing Ubisoft.

1. I was a bit skeptical of what I've seen from Convicton. I really don't enjoy any of the other Splinter Cell titles, and I wasn't sure if they were changing enough to make it enjoyable for non-fans like myself.

2. Cough up the dough, Vinny! :D

3. I just might pick this one up.

This may have been said but I think the "mark and execute" system is designed to simulate an ambush.  In other words Sam positions himself in a place the enemies believe is secure thus allowing you to "execute" them because they are being attacked from an unexpected direction and are generally on the wrong side of their cover.  I think the melee kill is just designed to add a little bit of challenge and reward the player for the setup.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume you could achieve the same effect by shooting from cover head shotting multiple enemies in a short period of time... far more difficult to pull off but then you are attacking (generally) from a more predictable direction allowing them to respond and take cover faster.

Interesting read Jeff, have to say the demo did nothing at all for me so was always a little unsure about a purchase. I'll pass on this now, looks like a solid Splinter Cell offering but doesn't exactly appeal to what I want from Splinter Cell.

God Damnit. I would have loved to see an update to the old stealth mechanics. Obviously games need to change, but There are plenty of action games out there, Splinter Cell has always had something special going for it with the focus on avoiding confrontation.

EDIT: I will not be buying this game any time soon...and by soon I mean prior to it being 15 bucks.

I don't usually take a pass on games like this, but I've had little interest in what I've heard about Conviction, and this review further compounds my belief that they've taken Splinter Cell in completely opposite direction than I'd hoped for.

@Sagalla: They look pretty boring not sure what much would be said about them.  Do they really serve a purpose beyond being something hyped on the back of the box? If Fisher wants to get answers out of someone then I think smashing them into walls and shit is a pretty bad way to do considering it should knock  them out or in too much pain to speak properly. I guess it's another case of videogame logic, getting punched hard doesn't daze and confuse.
The Punisher game from a couple years back was truly sadistic with this type of scene.

For Jeff, who, far as I know, never really liked stealth games, to give this new SC a 4 star score, is a very good sign in my eyes. I've always enjoyed the SC games, but I did want a more bad-ass Sam Fisher, and it looks like Ubisoft delivered on just that. It might all be a bit more simplified, but that really doesn't bother me, since this there is finally a game besides Batman that will let me feel like a stealthy, deadly predator.

Love the review, Jeff. Definitely getting this one as soon as I can.

I agree. Rainbow Six was a great series until Vegas (or really, until Xbox 1). Splinter Cell was a great franchise with a hardcore multiplayer component, and while I can't speak to the quality of the game in Conviction, the multiplayer is a joke. "
Personally i will miss the more "hardcore stealth" but i will still enjoy this game a ton. In a perfect world we would have both. On RS:V, i loved that game, i played that on xbox live for 3 years. i made a ton of friends and in my humble opinion is one of my favorite games, but everyone is entitled to an opinion.
