Runes first appeared in Norse mythology, acting as their equivalent of today's English alphabet. They were often written around grave sites as a warning, or to simply show that someone was buried there. Runes in games are more then often completely different to what the Vikings originally used them for, but are a good addition to certain games set around the time of Norse mythology.
