Concept »
Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Action RPG (Action Role-Playing Game), also known as ARPG, refers to RPGs (role-playing games) that use direct, real-time, reflex-oriented, action combat systems, instead of the more abstract turn-based or menu-based battle systems.
Items placed oh so close by, yet require traversing half the map and finding secret entrances to find
Backtracking is the act of navigating through previously explored areas, usually for the purpose of progressing in an objective-based adventure game. Players who are lost may also backtrack to reorient themselves.
Everything you need isn't always spelled out for you on the map. Sometimes even the map is not there till you go explore it.
A locked door blocks your way, but the key is in a locked chest, whose key is in another locked chest, whose key is in another locked chest...
A game where you eventually receive a map of an area. Like in Metroid Prime you have map download stations to get a map outline of the area. This is the same concept in the exploring Castlevania games.
A 3D engine created by MercurySteam for their games like Scrapland and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
Action RPGs where the battles takes place in the field rather be activated by touching the enemy.
Non-linear level design where the player is able to freely traverse the game world and choose where and when to visit certain areas in the game.
Power Ups can be used to give the controlling character, or any other character, temporary or permanent upgrades.
In a game that presents multiple options of how to proceed, Pseudo Non-Linear is when all options must be completed in order to proceed further. In other words it gives you to illusion of choice but there will ultimately be a set path.
A term used to describe the flow of action in a typical action game, where the pace is pre-defined to feature fast action and require quick reflexes. As the name suggests, these are games where the player character can run and shoot at the same time.
Games that have an open gameplay structure that allow players to interact with the world as they choose.
The ability to complete sections of a game out of the intended order (or to skip them entirely) through skill and knowledge of the game.
Side-scrolling games present the world as viewed perpendicular to the direction the characters are facing on screen. With a heavy focus on lateral movement, objectives are often met by moving from one end of a stage to the other.
A speedrun describes the action of a player attempting to complete a game in the fastest time possible. The rules of speedruns can vary, but generally allow glitching and sequence breaking as long as the player does not cheat with external devices/tools or tampering with the game.
